(SCOTTISH 1788-1864) PORTRAIT OF JOHN DAVID Oil on canvas (Dimensions: 64cm x 51cm (25.5in x 20in))(64cm x 51cm (25.5in x 20in))Footnote: Note: John David was part of the notable Gordon family and they made an indelible mark on history. His brother, Sir James Alexander Gordon was a highly successful Admiral in the British Fleet and became the inspiration for the ?ctional character “Horatio Hornblower”. One of his cousins was George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron. Following his marriage in 1805 to Maria del Carmen Beigbeider of Xeres de la Frontera, John David continued to support and develop the family estates of Wardhouse and Kildrummy in the North East of Scotland. Their children and subsequent generations are today known as “the Spanish Gordons”.Condition report: In very good condition. Under UV light there are areas of light retouching to the face and the very top of the canvas where the frame has rubbed.

HUGO VICTOR: (1802-1885) French Poet and Novelist. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed printed 8.5 x 10.5 engraved portrait of Hugo, depicting him in a head and shoulders pose. Signed by Hugo `A Mr. Jean Destrem - Victor Hugo´, in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount. Matted in purple and framed and glazed to an overall size of 13 x 17. MENJOU ADOLPHE: (1890-1963) American Actor. He appeared in films such as Charles Chaplin´s A Woman of Paris (1923), Stanley Kubrick´s Paths of Glory (1957), The Sheik (1921) with Rudolph Valentino or Morocco (1930) with Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper. A good signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph, a close-up portrait of Menjou. Signed in bold dark green fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image. Inscribed to Journalist André Jouniaux, a well-known autograph collector. G £60-90
MONTAND & BRASSENS & FERRE: Yves Montand (1921-1991) French-Italian Actor and Singer, Georges Brassens (1921-1981) French Singer, Poet & Songwriter, and Léo Ferré (1916-1993) French Poet and Composer. Three vintage signed 10 x 12 attractive programmes, signed to the front covers in bold dark ink, showing close and attractive portrait photographs of the French artists. The Montand programme, 1965, includes a three pages lengthy poem by Jacques Prévert entitled Yves Montand. The Ferre ones, inscribed, is dated 12th November 1971 in his hand. The Brassens one, 1969-70, includes to the inside pages several additional signatures by contemporary French artists. The first letter of his signed name being damaged and scratched. G, 3 £80-120
CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) Russian-born French Artist. L.S., `Chagall´, one page, small 4to, Boulogne sur Seine, 7th January 1929, to Monsieur Ridder, in French. The letter is in the hand of Chagall´s second wife Vava. Chagall responds to his correspondent, stating `I receive today the remaining photographs and the poem of Apollinaire.. he was the one who suggested the first large exhibition of the whole of my works in Berlin during the Spring 1914…´, further requesting new photographs for the entitled ones `Atelier 1910´, ´L`auto portrait´ and `Crucifix´. Overall small creasing with a small tape trace to the upper left edge, not affecting the text or signature. G £150-200Valentina Brodsky (1905-1993) Known as “Vava”. Second wife of Chagall 1952-85.
STRASSER GREGOR: (1892-1934) German Politician. An influential and prominent early figure of the Nazi Party. His conflicts with Adolf Hitler led to his assassination during the Night of the Long Knives. Signed 8vo card `Gregor Strasser´, beneath a small printed photograph of Strasser affixed to the card, the image showing him in a close-up portrait pose. Strasser adds in is hand and in bold black ink above his signature `Deutschland, Nur Deutschland! Nichts als Deutschland!´ (“Germany, Only Germany! Nothing but Germany!”). Dated in Berlin, 24th January 1933. VG £800-1200
EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A good vintage signed 8 x 11.5 photograph, the Hugh Cecil image of London depicting the Duke of Windsor standing in a formal three quarter length pose. Signed `Edward´, as Prince of Wales, in bold black fountain pen ink to a partially dark area to the lower right corner of the image, adding the date, 1927, in his own hand. To the verso bearing a printed stick, stating it is a portrait by Hugh Cecil, numbered, and a 12mo printed card stating "H.R.H. The Prince of Wales K.G. - to Alderman Herbert Hicks J.P - in remembrance of H.R.H´s visit to Sandwich during his Mayoralty. Christmas 1927." Matted to the photographer slightly larger mount, to an overall of 10 x 13.5. VG £400-600

BOTVINNIK MIKHAIL: (1911-1995) Russian Scientist and chess Grandmaster. World Chess Champion 1948-57, 1958-60 & 1961-63. A pioneer of computer chess. His pupils include World Champions Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik. Signed F.D.C., `M.Botvinnik´, in Cyrillic, 8vo postcard, 20th July 1994. The document commemorates the 70th Fide anniversary and shows a drawing portrait of Botvinnik in a head and shoulders pose playing chess. Signed in bold black ink to a clear area of the front postcard, neatly affixed to the inside of a folding white stiff. VG £150-200
MARSHALL E.G & STEVENS CRAIG: E.G. Marshall (1914-1998) & Craig Stevens (1918-2000), American Actors. Two vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photographs, the first showing Marshall in a close-up portrait pose, in a scene of The Journey (1959), the second depicting Stevens seated in a half length pose. Both signed in bold dark fountain pen inks to clear areas of the images. Both inscribed to French autograph collector Pierre Goulliard. VG, 2 £80-100
COCKER JOE: (1944-2014) English Singer and Musician. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph by Cocker, the promotional Parlophone image depicting the singer in a close-up portrait pose. Signed `Joe Cocker´, in bold blue ink across the image. Together with John McLaughlin (1942- ) also known as Mahavishnu. English Guitarist and Bandleader. Signed colour 10 x 8 photograph, the image showing the English guitarist seated and performing in a half length pose. VG £80-100
FRANCE ANATOLE: (1844-1924) French Poet & Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature 1921. A.L.S., `Anatole France´, two pages, on two sheets, 8vo, n.p., n.d., on his printed stationery, La Bechellerie, to J.P, in French. France states in part `I am not too bad, and the best is that Ti-Co is very well. She´s with books all day-long, while I meditate on purchasing useless furniture.´ Further saying `I am sending to you my portrait alongside the Pot-de-feu, illustrated by this word from Ti-Co: "I thought well that it would look like the tomb of Louis XVI". Words pronounced with bitter severity.´ Folded. VG £60-90
MAETERLINCK MAURICE: (1862-1949) Belgian Poet and Playwright. Nobel Prize in Literature 1911. An early interesting A.L.S., M. Maeterlinck, two pages, 8vo, n.p., [Gand], n.d., [1890], to a colleague, in French. Maeterlinck explains to his correspondent his parent´s disagreement referring to his sketch portrait by Minne, and states `I finally send you the sketch. Georges Minne, after keeping it for several days without reporting at all, send it back to me now and tells me that it is not necessary to fix it. But it happens that my parents, after I showed them the drawing, want to absolutely forbid me to publish it (if it ever was the case) as it is now, because they believe I look too much in a way I shouldn´t.´ further saying `..make it, if possible, and giving them this small satisfaction, looking a little bit more distinguished.. which they claim!´ On a post-scriptum, Maeterlinck concludes `I have just sent to Verlaine the 3 books´. A letter of very good association. VG £100-120George Minne (1866-1941) Belgian Artist and Sculptor.Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) French Poet. Considered one of the greatest French poets.The three books Maeterlinck refers to in the present letter are most probably Serres Chaudes (1889), La Princesse Maleine (1889) (Princess Maleine) and Les Aveugles (1890) (The Blind).
DORE GUSTAVE: (1832-1883) French Painter, Illustrator and Sculptor. A.L.S., G Doré, one page, 8vo, blue paper, n.p., Friday evening, n.d., to Martinet, in French. Doré states in part `I inform you that I am going to send my landscaping paintings and probably also my portrait after tomorrow, early in the morning, in order to take advantage of the Sunday people presence.´ A letter of good content. With blank integral leaf. Folded, with overall age wear. G £150-200
BREGUET LOUIS: (1880-1955) French Aviator and Pioneer Aircraft Designer. Vintage signed postcard photograph, the image showing the Breguet type IV airplane. Bearing to the upper left corner a portrait of Breguet, and to the lower right corner a French post-stamp, postmarked Douai-Gare, 5th December 1910. Signed by Breguet with his name alone to a clear area of the image. Small overall age wear, otherwise G £150-200
CUI CESAR: (1835-1918) Russian Composer, a member of The Five Group. Professor, Engineer and General. Signed and inscribed 4 x 7 cabinet photograph, the Atelier K. Shapiro portrait showing the Russian composer, wearing his military uniform, in a head and shoulders pose. Signed and inscribed in bold dark ink to a clear area of the image, in Cyrillic, and dated 1895 in his hand. Overall age wear, mostly to the edges, with pinholes to the borders, none affecting the signature. Together with Anton Rubistein (1829-1894) Russian Pianist, Composer and Conductor. Unsigned cabinet photograph of Rubinstein, the Atelier E. Bieber image of Hamburg showing the composer in a head and shoulders pose. SKORZENY OTTO: (1908-1975) Austrian SS-Standartenführer of World War II. A good signed 4 x 6 photograph, `Otto Skorzeny´, adding beneath his name his military rank, the image showing Skorzeny in a close-up portrait pose, smoking. C.1945. Signed in bold blue ink to the lower white border, also adding `Gran Sasso, 12th November 1943´, in his hand. VG £500-800The Gran Sasso raid, which Skorzeny refers to, was the rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, ordered personally by Adolf Hitler and executed by two German commandos in September 1943. Skorzeny´s two units arrived first and rescued Mussolini without a single shot.
SHEARER NORMA: (1902-1983) Canadian American Actress. Academy Award winner. An excellent signed and inscribed 10 x 14 photograph, the image depicting the Hollywood star in costume as Marie-Antoinette, in a head and shoulders smiling pose. Signed in fountain pen dark ink, 1938, `Sincerely - Norma Shearer´, also inscribed, to a clear area of the image. Small creases to the edges and some corners, and small tear to the upper edge, repaired to the verso. Also a very small brown stain, although portrait image remains in fine condition. G £120-200
