AN UNUSUAL POWDER FLASK, POSSIBLY ITALIAN, 19th century, 12in. long, comprising a silver-plated inner covered with a pierced and carved cow-horn outer depicting images from Roman legend including Romulus and Remus being suckled by the wolf, a portrait bust of an Emperor surrounded by a laurel wreath, a charioteer and a foot-soldier with columns in the background (possibly gladiators in the Coliseum), and a Roman soldier standing at the bottom of a staircase with a woman looking on from the top of the stairs, near the neck of the flask a heart-shaped panel is engraved with 'FEKETE', silver-plated nozzle with sprung iron cap.

General Service 1962, 2 clasps, Northern Ireland, Dhofar (24105622 Sig. D. A. Ware, R. Signals), in its card box of issue, together with related miniature dress medal and an S.A.S. cap badge, good very fine £400-500 Duncan Alexander Ware was born in May 1952 and enlisted in the Royal Signals at Edinburgh in September 1967. In his subsequent career of 18 years with the Colours he completed no less than four operational tours in Northern Ireland, the first of them in 1973 and the last in 1980, in addition to participating in the Dhofar operations in 1974-75. However, as verified by his Certificate of Service (copy included), he also served in the U.K. on a ‘classified’ basis on at least six occasions between 1977-81, namely during his employment with 264 S.A.S. Signals, so he may well have re-visited Northern Ireland on an operational footing during the periods in question. He was discharged with an ‘Exemplary’ conduct rating in July 1986; sold with a portrait photograph wearing his S.A.S. beret. £400-£500
Pair: Corporal A. Paterson, Parachute Regiment general Service 1962, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (24372971 Pte., Para.); South Atlantic 1982, with rosette (24372971 Cpl., Para.), together with his identity discs and two A.S.U. sporting prize medals, good very fine and better (6) £1800-2200 Alexander Paterson was born in April 1959 and enlisted in the Parachute Regiment in Glasgow in July 1975. Two tours of duty followed in Northern Ireland in 1978 and 1980, so, too, action in the Falklands with the 3rd Battalion - according to an accompanying handwritten note, Paterson served in Sergeant Ian McKay’s 4 Platoon, ‘B’ Company. in common with the remainder of 3 Para., he would have landed at San Carlos on 21 May 1982, participated in two night marches covering a distance of 40 miles, and then gone into action on Mount Longdon on the 11-12 June, when the Battalion lost 20 men killed and another 40 wounded. McKay, of course, won a posthumous V.C. on the same occasion. paterson was discharged from the 3rd Battalion at Aldershot in January 1985. sold with the recipient’s original Regular Army Certificate of Service; two portrait photographs, one taken on patrol in Northern Ireland and the other in the Falklands; embroidered Corporal’s stripes; and 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment swimming team and No. 1 Parachute Training School, R.A.F. patches. £1800-£2200

Dornan, Royal Army Service Corps queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Diamond Hill, Belfast (6385 Sejt., A.S.C.); King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (6385 C. Serjt.-Maj., A.S.C.); 1914-15 Star (T1SR-513 S.S. Mjr., A.S.C.); British War and Victory Medals (T1SR-513 W.O. Cl. 1, A.S.C.); Army Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., 1st issue (T1SR-513 S.S. Mjr., R.A.S.C.), surname officially corrected on the second, and number on the last, the earlier awards with contact marks but otherwise very fine and better (6) £300-350 thomas David Dornan was born in Aldershot in December 1870 and enlisted in the Commissariat & Transport Corps as a boy recruit in September 1885, aged 14 years. Advanced to Lance-Corporal Bugler in April 1889, to Corporal in April 1893 and to Sergeant in December 1897, he served in South Africa from October 1899 to September 1902, and won entitlement to the above described Medals & clasps with 13 and 32 Companies, A.S.C. So, too, further promotion, to Company Sergeant-Major in May 1900, and a war gratuity in July 1902 (Army Order 134 of 1902 refers). having then been discharged in September 1906, Dornan rejoined the Colours as a C.S.M. in September 1914, was quickly advanced to Staff Sergeant-Major and first entered the French theatre of war in No. 2 Company, 19th Divisional Train, in July 1915. Having then transferred to 19th Division’s 59th Field Ambulance that December, he appears to have remained on active service until the end of the War, and was awarded his M.S.M. for ‘valuable services rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders’ (London Gazette 10 October 1919 refers). Demobilised in March 1919, Dornan died in February 1952. sold with an original portrait photograph, in uniform, as a young recruit, and an invitation to the Victoria Dances for 1903-04, in the name of Miss Dornan; also see Lot No. 1062 for his brother’s Honours & Awards. £300-£350

R.’ on B.W.M., this with loose suspension rod; Lincolnshire Regiment cap badge, very fine and better (lot) £80-100 Edward Brompton was born in 1891 and enlisted for service in the Lincolnshire Regiment on 4 September 1914. Serving with the 4th Battalion Lincolnshire, he was posted ‘missing’ on 15 April 1918 and was later found to be a prisoner-of-war of the Germans. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 9 March 1919. Three: Captain C. J. Temperley, Royal Air Force, late Northern Cyclist Battalion and Royal Flying Corps, who was wounded in a combat in October 1917, while piloting an S.E. 5 of No. 60 Squadron british War and Victory Medals (Capt., R.A.F.); Territorial Force War Medal 1914-19 (Capt., N. Cyc. Bn.), contained in an old metalled display frame, together with his privately engraved silver identity disc, the obverse inscribed ‘Capt. C. J. Temperley, N. Cyc. Bn. & R.F.C., 1914-18’, and the reverse ‘Noel M. Temperley, W.R.N.S., 1940 1945’, extremely fine (4) £600-700 clifford James Temperley, who was born in June 1894 and commissioned as a Territorial Officer in November 1914, qualified for his ‘Wings’ in June 1915 (Certificate No. 1367), and remained employed on the Home Establishment until joining No. 60 Squadron, an S.E. 5 unit operating out of St. Marie Cappel, in October 1917. By then a Temporary Captain, it was intended he take up appointment as a Flight Commander, but in lieu of his lack of experience in scouts in France the Squadron C.O. vetoed the idea. And, as it transpired, Temperley was downed just a few days later, on the 28th, when wounded in the foot in a combat near Vlamertinger and forced to land near Poperinghe. Invalided home, he did not return to duty until April 1918, with an appointment at the Air Ministry, following which he served as a Staff Officer until the end of hostilities. He was placed on the Unemployed List in January 1919. sold with the recipient’s Great War photograph album, containing approximately 25 images of fellow pilots, aircraft and ‘prangs’, together with a fine-quality studio portrait in uniform, in contemporary glazed frame; a Dover Garrison Pass in the name of ‘2nd Lieut. C. J. Temperley’, circa 1915, and additional items appertaining to Noel Temperley, W.R.N.S., including another smaller identity disc, in white gold, and a silver and enamelled compact case, with central applique R.F.C. badge, together with two related photographs, an Admiralty certificate appointing her a Third Officer, dated 21 December 1941, and a souvenir programme for an R.A.F.
