Edouard Vuillard(1868 Cuiseaux - 1940 La Baule) Im AtelierMit gekonnt flüchtigem, dynamischem Strich gezeichnete, charakteristische Atelierstudie Vuillards, der neben Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Paul Sérusier und Félix Valloton Mitglied der Künstlergruppe Les Nabis war und zu den Hauptvertretern des französischen Postimpressionismus zählt. Die Zeitschrift La Revue blanche veröffentlichte zahlreiche herausragende Arbeiten des Künstlers. Neben der Malerei und seiner Tätigkeit als Grafiker, insbesondere als Lithograph, war er ein leidenschaftlicher Amateurfotograf, wobei seine Aufnahmen oftmals als Vorlage für seine Gemälde dienten. Bei diesem Werk überarbeitete er das traditionelle, "steife" Biedermeier-Porträt eines jungen Herrn aus dem Jahr 1849 durch ein Maori-Tattoo im Gesicht. Hierdurch erfährt es eine völlige Umdeutung, wirft Fragen nach persönlicher und kultureller Identität auf, dem Verhältnis Europas zu fremden, exotischen Ländern und der Kolonialisierung. German-born artist Francis Cleyn (c.1582-1658) lived and worked in England, a noted early English print maker.

(4) *** Martha Ray (1746-1779) was a singer, known for her affair with John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. She was murdered in Covent Garden by her jealous former lover James Hackman. He was hanged for the crime at Tyburn on 19th April, 1779.

The title is a cancel with copyright notice dated 1884 (second state but first state only present in the prospectus and advance sheets).

Outram Smith (1871-1954) followed his older brother into the clergy and maintained a special interest in missionary work. Original polished buckram gilt, top edge gilt. The definitive edition of Whitman's work issued in his lifetime, published just three years before his death.
