Circle of William Wissing Portrait of a gentleman possibly Sir Thomas Duppa Black Rod from 1683-1694 Half length wearing ceremonial robes and the Order of the Garter Oil on canvas in a carved wood frame 127 x 102cm; 50 x 40in Little is known about the life of Sir Thomas Duppa beyond his Parliamentary career. An engraved illustration plate 17 from The Coronation of James II depicts him in a procession and there is certainly a resemblance to the sitter in this portrait. The Black Rod he holds in the portrait is thought to have been retained by his descendents
