Pair of Chinese watercolour drawings on rice paperPortrait of a man standing with bow and arrows and portrait of a woman seated on gilded throne, 19cm x 14cm (2) Condition ReportSome marks/spotting to paper background of both pictures (particularly the woman) and a hairline white mark across the tunic of the male (not believed to be a cut), figures very clear and colours vibrant.
UnattributedOil on canvasHead and shoulders portrait of gentleman in a wig, labelled verso 'Samuel Swinton Captain RN' ( died in 1799), oval gilt mount, 19cm x 15cm, within gilt frame (damaged) Baroness Orczy when she wrote the Scarlet Pimpernell in 1905, loosely based the story of the hero, Sir Percy Blakeney on the life of Samuel Swinton, who, whilst in France during the French revolution, assisted in the escape some of the nobility who were in danger of going to the guillotine. ("They seek him here, they seek him there ..."!)
Attributed to William Henry Knight (1823-1863) - The Blue Dress, signed ( W H Knight), watercolour on tinted paper, 24 x 16.5, English School, 19th century - Three Children with an Improvised Plough, watercolour and a pair of miniature portrait engravings, possibly for mounting on the lid of a snuff box or similar, 1802 (4) Good condition
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Study of an Unknown Boy, head and shoulders, charcoal, 43 x 29.5cm, unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when he was a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor This meticulous and empathetic portrait of an unknown boy is reminiscent of the contemporary artist-photographers of the Linked Ring of the 1890's. The angle of the head and expression, suggestive of pity, or pathos, so ably rendered in the present example was attempted by many other British artists of the period, notably Walter Langley RI and other early members of the Newlyn School. To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Good condition
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Portrait of a Woman, seated half length in a green dress, signed (or inscribed) on the stretcher 'Harold Knight Painting' and verso with the artist's address 34 Elm Avenue, rectangular ink stamp inscribed Student's surname - Knight and Age - 21 / 3597, Subject No - 17G (?), paper label No 879, stencilled E.S.K., oil on canvas, 74.5 x 53cm Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor The model for this early, fully achieved portrait by Harold Knight, bears a striking resemblance to Kate Johnson, a fellow student of Harold and Laura Knight at Nottingham School of Art. Kate Johnson was one of a small group photographed at the School c1893. She was unrelated to Laura Knight, nee Johnson. To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) One or two minor scratches, varnish dirty, unlined, not holed or torn, in entirely original unrestored condition in narrow flat oak frame with traces of gilding. Note: extreme lower centre remains of a now browned and friable pasted label resembling a stamped edging, which, if inscribed, is no longer legible
John Singer Sargent RA, RP, RWS (1856-1925) - Freda Dudley Ward, signed and dated 1921, charcoal on paper, 62 x 47cm, original frame by Chapman Brothers LondonProvenance: The sitter's daughter Angela, Lady Laycock, nee Dudley Ward (1916-1999) (inferred); sold at auction on the premises at Wiseton Hall, Nottinghamshire (the seat of Sir Robert and Lady Laycock) in the early 1960's; whence purchased by the late father of the present vendorsThe socialite Freda, Mrs William Dudley Ward, nee Birkin (1894-1983) was the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII from 1918-1929. The longevity of their relationship and so completely enthralled to her was he that it became common knowledge in 'Society'. Churchill, a longstanding friend of Edward, observed in 1927 that "it is quite pathetic to see the Prince and Freda. His love is so obvious and undisguisable". With the turn of the 19th c Sargent largely abandoned the swagger portraiture of the fin de siecle and turned to charcoal head portraits, invariably on the high quality French paper he demanded. They are not only technically brilliant drawings but imbued with the same perception of character and serenity as the bravura portraits or life studies in oil that preceded them. The date of the present portrait, 1921, poses the tantalising possibility that it may have been commissioned as a gift by her royal lover. Sargant's portrait of the Prince of Wales, a similar charcoal drawing of virtually the same size in the Royal Collection (RCIN 917270) was executed only a year earlier. The existence of Sargant's Freda Dudley Ward was unknown until 2016 when it featured on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. Having been acquired over 60 years earlier at a sale at Wiseton Hall, it may be assumed to have belonged by then to the sitter's daughter Angela, Lady Laycock, the wife of Major General Sir Robert Laycock, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. Mellors & Kirk is pleased to acknowledge the kind assistance of Richard Ormond in the cataloguing of this lot Loosely laid down on the original stout card mount. Foxing as evident from image, two worm holes extreme lower right of sheet; de-framed for sale but sold with the original frame
