A Victorian rosewood and mother of pearl inlaid rectangular workbox, marked J T Needs, 100 New Bond Street, S1 with Bramah lock, the silk lined blue lift out tray complete with six ivory and mother of pearl bobbin spools, mother of pearl knife and pick with carved handle, the hinged lid enclosing stationery drop letter rack, the central rectangular inlaid panel with mother of pearl carved crowned portrait. This workbox comes with a quantity of paperwork listing its ownership through the family from the original owner, Mary Ann Todd, 1820-1900, where it was passed down to her granddaughter Grace Morice, 1880-1961, who in turn left it to her daughter, Dorothy Crawford, 1918-1998, who in turn left it to her daughter, (the vendor)

A Queen Anne silver patch box, maker`s mark of T.K, possibly for Thomas Kedden, circular form, the pull-off cover embossed with a portrait of Queen Anne, with the initials `Q` and `A` either side, the bases scratch initialled `A*K over `M*N`, diameter 2.3cm, approx. weight 0.1oz. Purchased from Phillips, London, 7 July 1978.
Continental school, late 17th / 18th century, allegorical portrait of a lady holding jewellery scales, probably representing Avarice, oil on canvas, mounted within a later elaborate gilt gesso rectagular frame" 49cm x 41cm In fair condition, the canvas with some old tears to the left hand side and to the area near the right hand holding the scales, losses to paintwork across the surface, the canvas relined, the frame with losses to to the extremities. A WEDGWOOD DISH - EMILE LESSORE painted in the Italian Maiolica style, and depicting Cherubs within a landscape scene. Impressed mark, Wedgwood and painted signature. *Lessore was initially a portrait and genre painter and etcher, who sought employment with Wedgwood in 1860. His association with Wedgwood did much to raise their national and international standing.
ROYAL WORCESTER VASE & COVER - SIGNED painted with fruit in a central panel, against a green ground and rich gilded decoration. With handles in the form of dragons and a domed top lid with gilded finial. Signed, Hawkins and marked Royal Worcester, England. 16 1/2ins (42cms) high *William A Hawkins was for many years the foreman of the men`s painters department. He specialised in still lifes and portrait and figure subjects.

TWO 19th CENTURY SCRAPBOOKS one containing three watercolours by Lord de Grey (military encampment, battle, marine subjects) and assorted Italianate landscape studies etc. by various hands; the other book containing many landscape, portrait and animal subjects by various hands, also prints and scraps etc. (2 vols.) * Thomas Philip de Grey (ne Robinson) (1781-1859) was First Lord of The Admiralty (1834-1835) and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1841-1844). He succeeded to the Earldom in 1833 and was the elder brother of The Viscount Goderich (Prime Minister, 1827-1828). ++ Generally good condition; many items loose; bindings broken
FOLLOWER OF MICHIEL JANSZ. VAN MIEREVELT (1567-1641) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, PROBABLY FRANCIS BACON, VISCOUNT ST. ALBAN (1561-1626) Quarter length, wearing a black tunic with gilt brocade (probably the robes of Lord Chancellor), a lace collar and a black hat, holding a staff, within a painted oval, bears later inscription FRANCIS BACON VISCOUNT ST. ALBAN, oil on panel 70 x 53cm. * The composition derives from engravings of Bacon after uncertain originals of c.1618. A long half-length depiction of Bacon by John Vanderbank (c.1731), also after a lost original, bears striking similarities in terms of pose, dress and appearance although the right arm is in a different position (see National Portrait Gallery, Wodehouse bequest). An unattributed full-length version imitating the same composition may be seen at Montacute House (Somerset). ++ Bitumenous retouching in the corner spandrels; needs a clean; slightly thin in places
