A late Victorian carved oak cased wheel barometer, by Negretti & Zambra, the broken pediment above a pair of winged beasts flanked by urns, with a silvered thermometer, flanked by Ionic capitol fluted columns, and a 9.5in silvered dial inscribed 'Negretti & Zambra Instrument Maker's to Her Majesty, London,' the base centred a portrait medallion of a classical female, 48.75in (124cm) h.
A mid 19th century ormolu and porcelain mounted mantel clock, the 8 day movement striking on a bell, stamped 'Japy Freres & Cie, 2537, 232, MF & F,' the dial painted a cherub, above a panel of figures with a bird cage, flanked by knoped columns, the urn surmount with an oval portrait, 19.5in (49.5cm) h, pendulum and winding key, on an oblong plinth and under a glass dome, repaired, and a pair of lidded vases with goat mask ring handles and giltwood plinths, 13.25in (33.5cm) h. (3) This lot was a wedding present to Mrs Myers (nee Pickering) from Baron Schroeder, owner of the bank, October 1871.
JAMES SANT R.A. (1820-1916), "THE COMMUNICANT", PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL IN A VEIL, signed with monogram, titled and inscribed on the mount, oil on canvas, Thomas Agnew & Sons paper label verso, in original gilt composition frame. 61cm by 51cm. Note: Sant was a prolific and highly successful portrait painter who, in 1892, was appointed Principal Painter-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1915 and was appointed full Royal Academician in 1869. He was particularly acclaimed for his idealised portraits of children and young women and this image is an extremely accomplished example of this genre.
JOHN MUNNOCH (1879-1915) SCOTTISH. PORTRAIT OF JESSIE MCGREGOR. Signed, oil on canvas 74cm x 61cm (29in x 24in) . Note: Broxburn artist John Munnoch studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and exhibited at the RSA and the Glasgow Institute, but tragically lost his life whilst serving in the 5th Royal Scots Regiment in Gallipoli in 1915, aged just thirty six. This oil depicts his fiancee Jessie McGregor. Another painting of her by Munnings, the Chinese Coat, can be found in the Stirling Smith Museum.
A late 18th century French School miniature brooch,. of oval outline, oil on ivory, depicting a half-bust portrait of a young lady in a white dress with a pale blue wrap, with oval glazed panel to reverse, containing woven hair and gilt initials in script, with deep blue enamelled border. Length 6.3cm.
A Elizabeth I 'Phoenix medallion 1574. With high relief portrait of Queen Elizabeth I to obverse and phoenix rising from the flames to reverse . Notes: please note it is felt this is a later copy, with chased detail, although it does not appear to be an electrotype. Original examples of this medal are extremely rare and only a handful are known to exist.
