Ancient Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd centuries CE. A depiction of a Roman goddess, perhaps Tellus, from a sarcophagus carved from striated, grey marble. Her sensitively modeled naturalistic features and flowing locks display the Roman taste for Greek and Hellenistic sculpture. However, the Romans were known for appreciating realism even more, a fact that is so evident in the lifelike quality of this subject's eyes and brows. The sculptor of this piece truly understood how to turn marble to flesh! Sarcophagi became more common at the beginning of the 2nd century CE when burial grew more favorable than cremation. Carved from stone, in this case marble, the panels were adorned with high and low relief mythological scenes, and by the 2nd century, it was also common to include a portrait of the deceased in a heroic guise. A rare and beauteous piece from ancient Rome! Custome stand. Size: 6.75" W x 6.75" H (17.1 cm x 17.1 cm); 10-1/4" high (26 cm) on stand Provenance: Ex-private L. Nathan, acquired from a Belgian antiquities dealer on the European Art Market Condition: Clearly a fragment, but oh what a fragment! Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A wondrous greyware portrait jar that departs from traditional realism to a more abstract depiction with finely delinated striations encircling his eyes emphasizing his hypnotic gaze, the linear markings radiating outward to cover his entire visage. Intriguingly, this individual was portrayed with a double-cleft palate. To the ancients of the Americas, individuals with physical deformities were regarded as touched by god and therefore quite special. Topping his head is a simple cap that terminates in the spout. Size: 9-1/2"H x 6-3/4"L x 5-5/8"W (24.1 cm x 17.1 cm x 14.3 cm). During the reign of the Incas, Peru had been the seat of outstanding pottery production for thousands of years. The Moche had developed the stirrup vessel to an art form full of expression and fascinating insight to the ancient Andean culture. The Inca followed in this tradition, however, in some instances they elaborated their own artistry and technique as we see in this example. Provenance: Ex-D. C. collection, California. Emmy Award Winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, collected before 2000. Ex-Arte Primitivo, New York City. Condition: Chips to rim and base. Expected surface wear. Nice root markings all over surface and white mineral deposits which contribute nicely to overall appearance. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #109171

There is a lady, Mrs. Mary Byrne, very well known to myself & more especially to my daughters (age about 34) who has a good deal of talent for designing, principally figure-subjects. She did a frontispiece to a book (Duckworth) with wh. my daughters were connected - "A Girl among the Anarchists", by Isabel Meredith, towards 1904: & she was getting on pretty well with some of the illustrated papers, when she fell ill, was incapacitated for a time, & lost her connexion. Then she - with her husband Geo. Byrne - went off to Rome….She wd., I have no doubt, be very glad to accept employment from you, her health having now rallied, & she having resumed work….Perhaps her foreign residence wd. indispose you to address her: but on the other hand it might put her in the way of doing some things for wh. British residents are less well adapted. She can paint as well as design.' In a lengthy postscript Rossetti further writes 'There is a painter, Frank Dean, chiefly landscape & portrait, who exhibits at the R.A. & elsewhere. He started a few days ago to India under contract with the Fine Arts Society to produce & exhibit a certain amount of work. This wd., I suppose, not prevent his working for you, in case you found any Indian or other work to offer him: will be away, I believe, 6 months. He is a capable artist & rather close friend of myself & family. If you want to address him, I take it that the Fine Art Society in Bond St. wd. be the right direction'.
