John Russell RA (1745-1806) - Portrait of a Lady, half length holding a rose, pastel, 58.5 x 44.5cm Provenance: English Art Market, c1975, when acquired by the collector Captain Gerald Pendred (for £1250); thence by descent Illustrated the article Portraits in Pastels by G Pendred, Antique Dealer and Collectors Guide, June 1989, p.42 Mellors & Kirk is grateful for the kind assistance of Neil Jeffares who has kindly confirmed the attribution (on the basis of images) and by whom this was hitherto unrecorded
Peter Romney (1743-1777) - Portrait of Thomas Chesterton aged 29, signed, dated and inscribed on the canvas backing (Peter Romney Pin[xt] Septr 10 AD [-] Thos Chesterton aetatis suae 29, pastel, oval, 44 x 35.5cm Provenance: Sir James Whittaker of Babworth Hall, Retford, Nottinghamshire from whom acquired by the late husband of the present vendor on 14 June 1963 Neil Jeffares has kindly commented on the present work (on the basis of images) points out that surviving autograph examples of the work of George Romney's younger brother Peter, is "very rare". Furthermore, the attributions to him made by R R M See are not reliable. The sitter was an ancestor of G K Chesterton (1874-1936) and may be identified with the Thomas Chesterton who was baptised at Chevely on 14 February 1755, son of John and Temperance Chesterton. He married Ann (or Annette) Laval (date unknown) and the couple had several children in the 1790's, one of whom was named Henry Laval Chesterton. Thomas Chesterton may possibly be the haberdasher of Berkeley Square, London who was bankrupt in 1789 but might also be another Thomas Chesterton who died in London in 1809. The absence of the year from Romney's inscription proves that the work was originally somewhat larger, presumably rectangular. On the assumption that the sitter has been correctly identified, the date of execution would have been 1774 Small close tear upper right
