Manner of Sir Peter Lely (Pieter van der Faes), 1618-1680, a half-length portrait of a gentleman, leaning on a table, oil on canvas, 125 x 100cmOverall condition looks to be clean and complete. There is a frame and swag in the background, behind the sitter, which is difficult to see in the images. The gum strip around the back looks to be from the last twenty years or so, suggesting it has been remounted. The canvas has been lined and the painting cleaned from what we can see, so it is difficult to ascertain the age. Judging by the labels of the stretcher it appears to be at least 19th century, but the frame could be older. There is a fine crazing within the painted surface and the lower edge 4cm wide may have been repainted in areas towards the centre. The frame is complete but marked and dirty with light overall losses. It was collected from a local house move, having been inherited through the family.
