Russia, 18th to 19th century CE. This is a wooden triptych with oil paint done in shades of brown with red highlights depicting a large, sensitive portrait of Jesus flanked by standing saints and with smaller images painted above each section of the triptych. There is Cyrillic writing on each of the panels and a high level of details -- this is one of those pieces where, every time you look, you see something new. The triptych form was extremely popular in Christian art in both the West and East from medieval times onward; this piece is part of that long tradition. Size: 23" W x 17.5" H (58.4 cm x 44.4 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: This piece is intact with the paint and artwork clear; there is some slight cracking to the paint. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111527
Russia, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A wondrously touching Russian Orthodox icon depicting Mary holding Jesus after he was taken from the Cross. This scene from the life of Christ inspired countless paintings and sculptures representing the glorious Pieta, including my favorites: the reknowned Michelangelo marble masterpiece housed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City (1498-1499) and the breathtaking painting by William-Adolphe Bougereau (1876); sadly Bougereau was inspired by the death of his eldest son (unfortunately the first of four of five children he lost) when he created his painting. Here we see the Virgin holding her recently deposed son from behind, her hands supporting his lifeless body across the chest, his gaunt body with ribs delineated, eyes closed, and hands crossed connoting an ironic peace. The composition is painted on a vertical (portrait orientated) panel with an integral, raised frame/border surrounding it. Back slats used to prevent warping indicate that this piece dates prior to 1880-1890 CE. A fine example! Size: 12.25" L x 10.5" W (31.1 cm x 26.7 cm) Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Surface shows its age with wear and losses particularly to the peripheries as shown. #111519
