Black, The British abroad, the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century, 2003, pp. 198-9, 281James Graham (1761-1824) was created 1st Baronet Netherby in 1783, the year he travelled through France and Switzerland to Rome in the company of his friend the Rev. Thomas Brand (c.1751-1814) where they both sat to Angelica Kauffman. We have an account of their journey through the letters of Brand who provides an interesting insight into 18th century travel. He writes that in Genoa they went to an opera buffa: for many grand tourists music was a significant part of the attraction to visiting Italy which very much dominated the operatic scene at the time. Graham and Brand went to Modena expressly to hear the renowned castrato Luigi Marchesi (1754-1829) sing. Their tour took them to Turin, Piacenza, Parma, Modena and Bologna before they went on to Rome early in December where this portrait was painted. From Rome they progressed to Naples in January 1784 where Graham fell ill with a violent fever. His inclination was to seek the help of an English doctor, though Brand deemed the man in question a quack, noting tartly that 'he had no confidence in himself and would have prescribed anything that I proposed...Lady Warren's maid died under his care'. Fortunately he persuaded his companion to consult the Neapolitan physician Cirillo who cured him. They were back in Rome by March and progressed to Florence and Venice where Graham sat for a second portrait, this time by the Irish artist Hugh Douglas Hamilton.On his return to England Graham represented Ripon in the House of Commons supporting Pitt, and the year after he was raised to the baronetcy he married Lady Catherine Stewart, daughter of the 7th Earl of Galloway. In her 2017 article on the present work, Stella Rudolph compares it to Maratta's The Madonna appearing before Saint Francis de Sales of circa 1690 originally painted for the Church of San Filippo in Forli and which now hangs in the Pinacoteca of the same city. This suggested dating of the last decade of the 17th Century coincides with King Charles II of Spain's first petition for the canonization of Juan de Palafox. Rudolph goes on to propose Francesco Salazar (1656-1706) as a possible candidate for commissioning the painting. A lost oval portrait by Maratta, now known through an engraving by Jacques Blondeau (1655-1698), confirms that the artist knew Salazar who is known to have been in Rome for the conclave to elect Innocent XII Pignatelli in 1691.Having served as chaplain to Maria of Austria and later as Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, followed by a brief stint as viceroy of Mexico, Palafox was first proposed for canonization in 1694 by King Charles II of Spain. The present painting may well have been commissioned with the intention of recording such an auspicious event. He dominated Indian affairs from 1772 to 1785 and, on his return to England, was impeached and finally acquitted on all counts following a sensational and historic 7-year trial. Judging from the sitter's age the present portrait would appear to date from sometime shortly after he returned from India in 1785 and is earlier than those portraits with which Hastings was known to have rewarded his loyal allies and supporters as gifts following the trial. The trial became a debate between two radically opposed visions of empire – one based on ideas of power and conquest in pursuit of the exclusive national interests of the colonizer, versus one represented by Burke, of sovereignty based on a recognition of the rights of the colonized. In memory of unfading Himalayan splendour" to limitation p., portrait frontispiece of the author tipped onto verso of upper wrapper (frontispiece with spotting and repaired tear to head, likely remounted), errata slip tipped in at front, light patch of browning to title, original stitched wrappers, light toning to covers, some light damp-staining, [York 42a], Published by the O. T. O., 1941.⁂ An excellent association copy inscribed to a companion on Crowley's failed expedition to climb K2.The expedition to climb K2 in 1902 was unfortunately unsuccessful although the party reached further than any before them and set several altitude endurance records in doing so. The expedition was beset by bad weather as well as the party suffering from a multitude of physical (Crowley had recurring bouts of malaria) and psychological ailments. Crowley's eccentricities including his decision to bring a substantial poetry library with him did not help matters; at one point Crowley threatened Knowles with a large revolver but was disarmed by the rest of the party. Knowles kept the revolver for the rest of his life as a memento of the extraordinary episode.

T. O., 1943.⁂ With a charming inscription from Crowley to the detective fiction writer Gladys Mitchell.In the letter Crowley discusses his reputation "I am so accustomed to being denounced as Head of the Internation Drug Traffic, White Slave Traffic, German Spy System, Fourth Division of the O.G.P.U, and so on. A busy lad" and discusses a recent book of Mitchell's that has occasioned the correspondence between the two writers (possibly The Worsted Viper which involves Satan worshipers in Norfolk). He also praises her creation Mrs. Bradley and makes a gift of the present inscribed work.
