South American School / Spanish School (19th century), Large oil on canvas,Half length portrait of a Hespanic lady, possibly in mourning, wearing an elaborate European dress and adorned with gold jewellery, Signed indistinctly lower right and dated '1873', 108cm x 92cm,Later gilt wood frame(Restored) (at fault)Provenance: Ex-lot 766 Philips Chester (Sale Number C1607) - Three day fine sale 9th - 11th September 1998 CONDITION REPORT: The painting has been allowed to fall into a poor state of repair and then received some restoration but remains in a poor condition. The canvas is lightly grubby throughout, has a craqueleur throughout and degrading to the varnish and perhaps some of the paint. There may have been some repainting. There are some raised areas visible. The left hand of the sitter does not appear to have been repainted but is poorly executed compared to the rest of the portrait. There are later strips attached to both long edges of the canvas - these appear to have been stapled down from the front. The painting has been relined and there are modern wooden batons visible on the back. ATTENTION WILL BE NEEDED.

A 19th Century oil on board portrait of John Edye (1789-1873), a naval surveyor / architect with HM service, elected a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1935 and author of "Calculation on the equipment and displacement of ships of war. He was also involved in the construction of The Agamemnon, the first steam ship of the line. Standing pose beside an open window with ship in sea, 39 x 29cm, gilt gesso frame. Together with memorial booklet, last will and testament and notification of the orde of the Bath. Uncle of William Henry Edye
BRIGADIER JOHN HENRY MURRAY EDYE DSO MC MBE: A collection of items relating to his career. An 1897 pattern George V Infantry officer's sword, the piered steel hand basket with turned down inner-guard, shagreen grip with leather portepee knot. The blade by Army and Navy cooperative Co is engraved with foliage, the King's Crown and Cypher together with 'J. EDYE York and Lancaster Regt', brown leather scabbard. The lot includes photograph portraits, ephemera including citation and obitiary. Also, his wife Dorothy Alexandra Edye's Red Cross Society medal and scroll together with portrait photograph. John Edye was wounded in Ypres 8/7/15 and at Yser Canal 29/8/15 Shell shocked in 20/8/16. Awarded DSO and MC

Thomas Duckett of Preston, (1804-1878) a 19th century carved marble portrait bust, of Mrs Baynes, dated 1862, signed and inscribed to the reverse, on a socle base, 72cm high. Thomas Duckett was apprenticed at Franceys, in Liverpool, a firm of stonemasons, before returning to his home town of Preston, where he became a well respected sculptor. Perhaps his most notable work is his limestone monument of Sir Robert Peel, erected in 1852, which still stands in the centre of the town.
