He also made advances in mathematics, particularly in spherical trigonometry...This is one of the very few places where a complete description, in English, of the chessboard abacus (also known as local arithmetic) appears' (Tomash & Williams). Four pieces of Wedgwood jasperware to include a green flower vase, green tea caddy canister, lilac square trinket box and an oval Elizabeth II portrait wall plaque of blue ground.The plaque measures 22.5cm tallQty: 4Condition report: The plaque has a rim fault from production. The tea caddy has a section of the flange of the lid broken away (part of which is still present) The flower vase has a foot chip and there is a firing crack to the cover. The box has a small rim chip.

There are one or two small spots of mould across the surface of the miniature. The miniature is framed and glazed.

The Mint decided to issue this set with an all matte finish rather than the highly polished proof finish. Each coin bears the Edward VII portrait by George William De Saulles on the obverse.Condition report: Coins have been handled. Please expect light marks/signs of wear to each. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane, there is a thick build up of dirt on the reverse. The paint layers have a network of age cracks which have been stabilised and flattened through lining. There are old, pin prick losses at the junctions of the cracks. There are areas of retouching across the surface. The varnish is clear and even although a little matte with a layer of surface dirt present.

English Midlands School (early 19th century), a portrait miniature, Mr John Davidson, Chief Physician of the Nottingham General Hospital, oval, bust-length, slightly turned to dexter, wearing a white stock and black coat, 8cm x 6cm, ebonised oval convex frame, ribbon-tied cresting, milled gilt-metal mounts, trophy apron, 17.5cm x 12.5cm overall, conserved 19th century ink manuscript label to versoJohn Davidson (1797-1843) was born at Pontcysyllte, Denbighshire, Wales, the son of Matthew Davidson (1755-1819), himself a childhood friend and future engineering colleague of Thomas Telford. The early education and surgical training of John Davidson is recorded as having been financed by Telford: in 1819 he graduated from Edinburgh Medical School, and by 1819 he was practising at Hanely in the Potteries, Staffordshire. Between 1824-1831 he Davidson was a medical doctor in Nottingham, and by 1835 was signing himself 'John Mitchell Davidson M.D., Chief Physician to the Nottingham General Hospital; not to mention his extensive private practice. While physician to the Nottingham Lunatic Asylum, -having been appointed in 1842 - Davidson, on 13th June, 1843, died suddenly of a ruptured blood vessel 'when out on a professional duty at midnight'.

Cleaned by Rowe 1895 and by W M Power Oct 1911. In Jul 1991, it was examined by Charles Holroyd, Professor Holmes, Oakes Turner and Mr McColl. Each said it was Chantrey and likely painted by Chantrey, Sir Charles Holmes showed it the National Gallery. It was offered for sale by Powell to the National Art Collection Fund but no money was available. Not offered elsewhere. The present owner states her grandfather acquired it in Norton. It was painted before 1810 at which time Chantrey gave up painting. He was aged c.28 and the brush strokes shows evidence of his RA training. Lent by Mrs G.M. Silver and Mrs M.J. WildeSir Francis Leg(g)att Chantrey RA (7 April 1781 ? 25 November 1841) was an English sculptor. He became the leading portrait sculptor in Regency era Britain, producing busts and statues of many notable figures of the time. Chantrey's most notable works include the statues of King George IV (Trafalgar Square); King George III (Guildhall), and George Washington (Massachusetts State House).
