Nadezhda, "Miles Davis study", unframed acrylic on canvas, 2020, 14 x 14cm. As part of my series of paintings of musicians which I created during the first 2020 lockdown, I made some small studies of Miles Davis' face. This small portrait is taken from a period in his life when he was suffering greatly, and I have captured that troubled and intense expression in his eyes. He had a very troubled start to his life and was by all accounts a very difficult man, yet he found an outlet through music and gave his great heart in musical expression. I admire people who transcend their suffering and transmute it into a form which brings so much joy to others. My portraits are a celebration of the human spirit. (c. 1690). Engr. by N. Cochin after S. de Pontault de Beaulieu representing the Battle of Lens which ended the 30-years War, printed on 2 conjoined sheets. 585 x 900 mm (image size). NOTE:Upper part of a larger representation of the Battle of Lens on 20 August 1648. The whole scene is surrounded on the right and left sides by a decorative triumphal arch of olive leaves held by a cock and an eagle, on top of which a portrait of Louis XIV is attached within an elaborate cartouche, representing him as a true 'sun king'. In good condition. - Sold as is, not subject to return.
