Florence Camm (1874-1960). Portrait of Steve Donoghue. Charcoal, crayon and wash. 43.5cm x 27cm. Steve Donoghue, one of the greatest jockeys of the twentieth century, began his career as a stable lad at the Freemasons Lodge in Newmarket. His employer, Alfred Sadler Jr., soon discovered that the eighteen year old boy was a talented rider. After spending a further year in the stables of John Porter and Dobson Peacock he moved in 1903 to Chantilly, France, where he built his international fame. Between 1914 and 1923 he won nine hundred and forty six races and the Derby on six occasions. He remains the only Jockey to have won this world famous race in three consecutive years.. Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959). Portrait of Jackie, the artists son. Graphit. Signed upper right. 56cm x 43cm. Epstein loved to draw and sculpt children and he often made portraits of his son Jackie growing up. He often affectionately nicknamed Jackie 'Ragamuffin' and in this loving drawing he exaggerates his son's features, in particular his cheeks and mouth suggesting in him a sense of vagabond naughtiness and mischief. The drawing relates to a series of four portraits of Jackie dating 1935-1942 from the collection of the renowned buyer of his works, Edward Schinman.. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports.
