Monumental Italian version of the Metamorphoses admirably illustrated by the Neapolitan painter Antonio Zezon. The first volume contains the text by the Italian Renaissance scholar, the second volume contains the engraved plates. Giovanni Andrea dell'Anguillara, 1517 - 1572, a native of Sutri, was a poet and printer in Rome and Venice. His fame is mainly linked to the translation of this work. Antonio Zezon, Naples 1803 - 1881, devoted himself to lithography and publishing. Little is known about his activity as a painter. In 1830, he participated in one of the exhibitions of the Royal Bourbon Museum with a View of the courtyard of the church of Santa Chiara. Between 1850 and 1856, he produced a work sold in booklets on The Uniforms of the Bourbon Army and Navy. He had his lithographic establishment in the Regio Palazzo Vecchio in Naples.

Many illustrations are signed as designed by (I.) M(auro) R(overe), and all are signed as engraved by L(eon) P(alavicino), apart from that on p.149, which is unsigned. The work is divided into three parts: the first names all the most famous dancers of the time, and describes the sumptuous dance parties held in Milan; the second part describes the dance techniques, while the third describes the evolution of ballet from a scenic and musical point of view. In this third part appear the names of the knights and ladies, belonging to the high Milanese aristocracy. From p. 117 onwards the text contains many passages of music for the lute. FOLLOWER OF HIERONYMUS CUSTODIS PORTRAIT OF A LADY, TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS A MEMBER OF THE HOWARD FAMILY Oil on panel 75 x 62cm (29½ x 24¼ in.)Provenance: Possibly, Arundel Castle George Howard, Earl of Carlisle, Naworth Castle, Cumbria Thence by descent to the present owner. Condition Report: The panel has two vertical cracks/joins running the full length of the work. This corresponds with horizontal wooden supports which have been applied verso. The panel has bowed and does not sit flush in the frame. Some light craquelure throughout, most noticeably to the face. It appears as though previously some of this craquelure may have started to lift and there are some very slight associated losses. This appears now to have been stabilised. Some superficial scratches throughout, together with some rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouching and in-filling throughout, particularly to the sitter's face, and hands, and along the two joins. There is also a green cloudy varnish. Some paint loss/retouching to the sitter's hair is visible in a natural light.Condition Report Disclaimer

Condition Report: The canvas has been relined and is on a modern stretcher which is providing good support. There is fine surface cracking but the paint layer appears to be stable. Under UV light there are scattered areas of restoration, but these seem to be mostly confined to background areas and not on the figure, It has been revarnished. She was a member of the Howard and Stanley families. In 1864, she married George Howard. In 1870, Gabriel Dante Rossetti painted her portrait which is now owned by her great great grandson, the 13th Earl of Carlisle at Castle Howard.
