M. J. Campbell of Mamore, Mother of John IV Duke of Argyle. Na. 1673 Obt. 1758`. 29½ ins x 24½ ins (75 cms x 62 cms), within a gilded 19th century frame 37¼ ins x 32¼ ins (95 cms x 82 cms) inclusive. [Provenance: By family descent]. The sitter was the daughter of John, 8th Lord Elphinstone (1649-1718) and Isabel Maitland, daughter of Charles 3rd Earl of Lauderdale. Her father fought at Bothwell Bridge in 1679 against the Covenanters and was a staunch supporter in the succession of the Protestant William of Orange. Elizabeth married in 1692 the Hon. John Campbell (1655-1729) M.P. of Dumbarton and son of Archibald, 9th Earl of Argyll. She, in turn, was mother of General Sir John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll who was famously painted by Thomas Gainsborough.

(1744-1778) 24 ins x 20 ins (61 cms x 51 cms) held in a period carved & gilded frame 31 ins x 27 ins (79 cms x 69 cms) inclusive. Sir Griffith Boynton, 6th Bt. was born of 22nd February C. 1744 at Wallingwells, Nottinghamshire, the son of Sir Griffith Boynton 5th Bt. and Anne White. He married firstly Charlotte, daughter of Francis Topham, May 1762 at York Minster, and secondly Mary, daughter of James Heblethwayte in August 1768 at Burton Agnes, Yorkshire. Educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge he succeeded to the title of 6th Baronet Boynton of Barmston Co. York on 18th October 1761. He held office of Sherriff of Yorkshire between 1771 and 1772 and Member of Parliament for Beverley between May 1772 and 1774. He died from a fever on 6th January 1778 aged just 32 at Burton Agnes Yorkshire.

Portrait of Richard Burton (1821-1890), oil on canvas portrait, one small hole to left of image, canvas with water staining to left hand margin, not affecting image, mounted on contemp. oak stretcher, 75 x 64cm (29.5 x 25ins) Sir Richard Francis Burton was an explorer, soldier, translator, orientalist, linguist, poet and diplomat. He is well known as the translator of the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra. He travelled with John Speke to discover the source of the Nile and fought in the Crimean war. He was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa and with the help of native guides discovered Lake Tanganyika. This painting is clearly based on the famous portrait by Frederic Leighton, which was finished in 1875 and which now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. (1)

* Hudson (Thomas, 1701-1779). Portrait of a Gentleman, possibly a Self Portrait, half length oil on canvas portrait, wearing a brown coat and holding a snuff box, 73 x 61cm (29 x 24in), framed. Thomas Hudson (bap. 1701-1779), portrait painter and art collector was born in Devon. He was taught by the London artist Jonathan Richardson and married his daughter Mary. Until Richardson`s retirement in 1740 Hudson painted portraits primarily in the west country, including Devon and Bath. On Richardson`s retirement Hudson gained a number of his master`s clients and became more prominent in London. During his career Hudson painted at least 400 portraits, about eighty of which were engraved. Sitters included members of the aristocracy, landed gentry, political leaders, Anglican clergy, and popular figures in music and the theatre and he was particularly active in the 1740s and 1750s. Among his best-known portraits are Charles Spencer, Third Duke of Marlborough, and his family (c.1755; Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire), and two portraits of George Frederic Handel (Staats- und Universitotsbibliothek, Hamburg; and NPG).Hudson`s success attracted apprentices, among them Joshua Reynolds, Joseph Wright of Derby, and John Hamilton Mortimer. After the mid-1750s, Reynolds began to receive commissions from Hudson`s patrons and a rivalry developed. Although Hudson exhibited with the Society of Artists in 1761 and 1766 he was receiving fewer commissions by this time, and he retired to his villa in Twickenham. (1)

Margaret Gere, closely associated with the Birmingham Group of Artists-Craftsmen which included Joseph Southall, Arthur Gaskin, Bernard Sleigh and others, studied first at the Birmingham School of Art under her brother Charles M. Gere, and later at the Slade School. Her first joint exhibition was held with her brother at the Carfax Gallery in 1912. She exhibited at the New English Art Club from 1910 and became a member in 1925. (1)

* Dunlop (Marion Wallace, 1864-1942). Fairies and hop flowers, oil on canvas, of a fairy in a diaphanous blue dress seated amongst hop flowers, and surrounded by four baby elves, initialled in right-hand corner 'MWD' and dated 1902, 245 x 195 mm (9.75 x 7.75 ins), framed Marion Wallace Dunlop was a portrait painter, figure artist and illustrator. She worked in London from 1871, and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of Women Artists, amongst other places. She illustrated 'Fairies, Elves and Flower Babies' and 'The Magic Fruit Garden' (both published 1899). Dunlop is also famous for her involvement in the Suffragette Movement. She was the first female suffragette to go on hunger strike, in 1909, after being arrested and sentenced to a month's imprisonment for painting a clause from the Bill of Rights on the House of Commons. She was committed to Holloway on the 1st July and began refusing food on the 5th July. She maintained her fast for 91 hours of fasting before she was released on the grounds of ill health. (1)

* Uptton (Clive, 1911-2006). A set of original illustrations for a Lilliputian tale, pub. Princess magazine, 1964, together fifteen grisaille watercolour illustrations, on artist's board, most signed, image size approx. 250 x 420 mm (10 x 16.5 ins) and sl. smaller. Clive Uptton was a prolific cartoonist, poster artist, illustrator and painter. He studied at Southend Art School and then at the Central School of Art in London, but turned professional before completing his studies. Some of his earliest paid work was as an illustrator for the Strand Magazine, and he also contributed regularly to Good Housekeeping, Woman's Illustrated (including stories by Barbara Cartland), Tit-Bits, Tatler, Radio Times, Look & Learn, Sphere (including covers), John Bull (including covers) and others. In 1940 he became political cartoonist on the Daily Sketch and Sunday Graphic, and later worked for the Ministry of Information and National Savings Committee producing propaganda cartoons, drawings and paintings. Perhaps Uptton's best- known wartime work was his large and prophetic D-Day landings drawing, 'This is the Year' and 'We Kneel Only to Thee', both of which were widely reproduced as posters. Uptton later won prizes for his posters in the National Outdoor Advertising Awards in 1958 and 1959. He continued to work as a landscape and portrait painter (commissions included portraits of Harold Macmillan and Anthony Eden) and as a book illustrator (notably for Warner Press) until 1987, when his eyesight began to fail.
