An Important Great War and WWII Medal Group awarded to Lt Col. Ernest Graham Hamilton, C.M.G; D.S.O; M.C of the Connaught Rangers and Cheshire Regiment. Medal Group: D.S.O, The Military Cross, Order of St Stanislas (3rd Class Breast Badge with swords), 1914/15 Star, Victory Medal (with laurel leaf), Defence Medal,1939-1945 War Medal and Companion of St Michael & St George; presented on ribbon in original Spink & Sons and Garrard & Co presentation boxes. All in excellent condition. Lt Col. Hamilton joined Connaught Rangers in 1902; served in India 1902-06; West Africa,1906-7; returned to India in 1908; Capt, 1911; Lt.-Col.,1924; Col 1928, in France with Expeditionary Force August 1914-Feb 1915; Staff Captain Feb 1915; Brigade Major. In September 1915; went to Mesopotamia with Indian Corps Dec 1915 having served continuously since outbreak of war (mentioned in despatches five times), D.S.O., C.M.G., M.C, promoted) commanded 148 th (3rd West Riding) Infantry Brigade, TA 1929-33; retired pay, in 1933 recalled, June 1940 Gen. Staff, Aldershot Command. Despatch Certificates for Military Cross 14th January 1915, 30th November 1915, DSO 24th August 1916, Order of St Slanislav 10th April 1917, St Michael & St George 5th March 1919. Lt Col Hamilton went to France in August, 1914 and took part in the Retreat from Mons, Battles of the Aisne, Marne, Ypres, Neuve Chapelle and Festubert. Lt Col. Hamilton was awarded The D.S.O for services in Mesopotamia, where he was Brigade Major of the 9th Infantry Brigade; "for conspicuous gallantry during an enemy counter-attack". "He rallied men of different regiments at a critical time and under heavy rifle fire. His efforts were successful in stopping the enemy." Lt Colonel Hamilton wrote two books under the nom de plume H.E Graham entitled The Defence of Bowler Bridge'; The Battle of Dora. Together with a photographic portrait by photographer Herbert Speed, York and a group photograph including various dignitaries.
WILLIAM TAYLOR LONGMIRE (1841-1914); watercolour 'Loughrigg Fell and Rydal Water', signed lower right and dated 1877, titled verso, 24 x 36cm, Jenny Holland; watercolour 'Robin Hood Bay, Yorkshire', signed lower right and titled lower left, 26 x 32cm and after John Hoppner, a print of a portrait of Jane Elizabeth, Countess of Oxford, 47 x 38cm, all framed and glazed (3).
ENGLISH SCHOOL (EARLY 19TH CENTURY); pastel and coloured chalks, portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders wearing a blue coat, waistcoat and cream stock, unsigned, 29 x 24cm, with further decorative watercolour depicting a boy standing on a balcony, a further watercolour after Francesco Zurbaran depicting a Spanish tailor holding scissors in his right hand, a further landscape oil and a small oil of a bearded saint, all framed (5).

JOHANNES GRENNES (Norwegian, 1875-1963); a pair of early 20th century oils on canvas, portrait studies of Mr & Mrs Christensen, the husband the owner of M.Simoni, wine merchant, Aalborg, Denmark, the first depicting the husband wearing a blue suit writing at a work desk, the second depicting the wife wearing a fur ruff in formal upright pose, signed to lower right and left respectively, the first 42 x 48cm, the second 53 x 45cm, both framed, also with a further oil on canvas depicting the aforementioned wine merchant's premises by a different artist, indistinctly signed to lower right (3).
A cased George V hallmarked silver presentation spoon inscribed 'Darlington' with enamelled crest and portrait of George Stephenson to the bowl, a cased set of hallmarked silver coffee bean spoons, a further silver spoon, a cased set of six silver sheath handled knives and a pair of continental transfer decorated cups with silver rims.
A small quantity of collectors' items comprising a wool floral decoration under a glass dome, two miniature porcelain vignettes of landscapes, possibly Italian, framed and glazed, a miniature portrait on ivory in piano key frame (af), and a playing card box and matchbox cover in matching gilt heightened monochrome floral pattern (6). CONDITION REPORT: The wallflowers are slightly faded, the miniature figural painting has a crack down the middle.
DORA RATMAN; a folder of black and white wood cuts including landscapes, marinescapes, figurative studies, portrait, etc, all either signed or inscribed dating from 1927 to c.1930 and with Dora Ratman's own book plate to the inner cover, various sizes. William Prewett (British, fl.1735-1755), Portrait of a gentleman, standing three-quarter length, wearing a brown coat and white stock, his hair bewigged and powdered, circa 1740, enamel, oval, in a silver frame with pierced spiral cresting, 4.80 x 4.20cm. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 16 December 1998, lot 95 Appears a little dirty under glass, particularly in the forehead area and lower left, by the sitter's arm and by the buttons of his coat. Not examined out of frame. Possible staining or paint loss lower left.
M *** Daviot (French, 18th Century) Portrait of a young boy half-length, holding a ball, leaning upon a parapet signed and dated lower right "M. Daviot p. 1787" oil on canvas, unlined 58 x 48cm (23 x 19in) Provenance: From a Lancashire country house Quite dirty and old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front. Unlined and on its original stretcher. "Franfkff ... " on an old label to the reverse. Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas tension is slack and stretcher bar marks are visible. There are minor undulations across the surface and a few knocks. In the upper right quadrant are two scratches in the paint layer. Overall the painting is in a good condition for its age. The varnish is very yellowed and appears to have been partially removed in the areas of the sitter's collar, hands and area below the hands. Wear and abrasion to the frame.
