BRITISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) Portrait of an Officer and a companionUnsigned, oils on canvasboth 71cm x 91cm CONDITION REPORT: Soldier: hole at right hand. Hole at mid right hand side of figure. Canvas loose at top right hand corner. Stretcher has come apart. Craquelure all over. White paint (?) splashes, mostly on legs and to right hand side of legs. Paint rubbed at bottom edge and at top and side. Bloom on left side of painting and bottom right hand area. Rather yellowed overall. This has not been relined. Female figure: Unframed but stretcher good. Canvas rubbed at margins. Couple of splashes to right hand side of figure. Slight bloom towards bottom of canvas. Bottom edge shows signs of pins from the back? - ridges on the canvas. Dribbles at bottom left hand corner and some small drips top right hand side. Scrape to surface foil at mid-bottom left hand side, 15cm. Slight fine craquelure. Rather yellow overall. This has been relined.
Carl Bauer, German miniature novelty globe, early 19th century 'The World with its Inhabitants', the globe, 4cm approx. and a hand-coloured series of portrait engravings of native people in concertina form, boxed. Annotated in German, Australia as Niu Holland, monogram The ERDE in Kleinen, C.B., made up of twelve printed gores. CONDITION REPORT: There are 27 portrait engravings in the box, the first being glued to the bottom of the box by a flap.

A continental circular embroidered portrait of a girl in Arts & Crafts style wearing a velvet and silk bonnet with turquoise and beadwork tassels, a cotton foliate background mounted on hessian painted with oil, 36cm diameter. CONDITION REPORT: Frame cracked but still rigid. Portrait is under glass. A few minor areas of possible damage, possible dirty areas but generally seems ok.

Numerous small nicks to blade edge. Some wear to gilding on hilt. Small chip to top of grip. Scabbard leather with numerous cracks, splits and general wear. Top mount loose. Wear to gilding on all mounts. Tip mount with numerous bruises and dents and with crack to upper edge. Sword not slotting fully into scabbard.

A Queen Anne or George I tortoiseshell and silver box, unmarked, English circa 1710-20, the hinged rectangular cover with silver pin work and an embossed head and shoulders portrait of Queen Anne wearing a laurel wreath, 5.5cm (2 1/8in) long; and a late Victorian silver rectangular vesta box, London 1896, plain and engraved S.S. India/ P Co. Sep. 1896 , 4.7cm (1 7/8in) long (2) SS India was a steam passenger liner operated by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company between 1896 and 1915. India was the first of five sister ships built for P , the others being the Persia, China, Egypt and Arabia. India was the largest ship built for P at the time. She was hired by the Admiralty on 13th March 1915 and was used as an armed merchant cruiser. On the 8th of August that year she stopped off Helligvaer, near Bodo, Norway, to investigate a suspected blockade runner, and was torpedoed by SM U-22. India's sinking caused the deaths of 160 men. The surviving 22 officers and 119 men were taken to Narvik. HRH Prince Philip (b. 1921), Duke of Edinburgh, a signed 7 3/4in x 5 3/4in photograph, of the Prince seated in a formal three quarter length pose, the photograph by Anthony Buckley (stamp verso), signed Philip in black ink to the lower photographer's mount, in a green leather frame by H. H. Plante, London, with the Prince's crest gilt stamped, 31.5cm (12 1/2in) high, in a card box from Plante Provenance: with a note on British Embassy, Beirut headed paper detailing that this portrait was given to Helen Riches by the Prince at 7.50am on Thursday 23rd March 1967 before his departure. Also with a calling card for Sir Derek Riches and the dinner menu for 21st March (in French). Sir Derek Riches, KCMG (1912-1997) was a career diplomat eventually serving as ambassador to Libya (1959-61), Congo (1961-63) and then Lebanon (1963-67) being forced out due to the Arab-Israeli war of that year.
