Lockard was one of two soldiers manning the brand-new radar station at a hilltop at Opana Point on the northern tip of Oahu. CORRESPONDENCE OF P.O.W. CHESTER BOWLES, CAPTURED AT KASSERINE PASS Large group of correspondence from Pfc. Chester Bowles of Xenia, Ohio, a member of the 168th Infantry who was captured in Tunisia on or about February 15, 1943 and held at Stalag IIIB near Furstenburg, Germany and about 60 miles southeast of Berlin, for the duration of the war. The 168th Infantry was essentially destroyed at its position atop Djebel Lessouda by elements of the 21st Panzer. The grouping contains 26 letters from Bowles to his mother in Xenia on official camp stationery, all dated from May 17, 1943 to Feb. 13, 1945, and there are an additional 80+ letters from Bowles from during his training and earlier in the war. As is always the case, the POW letters are fairly routine, sending regards to family and friends, mentioning letters received, etc. but at times his despair shows through. He writes, in small part: '...All we've done today is sit around & talk about the good times we've [had] on [July] fourths in the past. This has been the worst one I ever spent...Tell Freda I still love her dearly...haven't seen any mail for three weeks...Just came back from church...These nice days sure make me homesick...We are still getting our Red Cross food parcels each week so as long as they keep coming we haven't got anything to worry about...take good [care] of my wife...Being here in Germany there isn't much to write about...just a few more lines from one old wore out soldier...' On May 8, 1945 (the day of the German surrender), Bowles writes his family for the first time since the start of the year. He mentions that he was freed on April 26th: '...You will never know how we felt when we first saw our boys coming up the road after us...' Bowles writes that anticipates an early return home to his wife and family, but this was not to be. The army held Bowles in the service until at least the middle of October, as other letters in the grouping indicate. Bowles' letters from before and after his capture are unread by us. Also present is a photo portrait of Bowles in uniform, ten worn French and Italian banknotes collected by Bowles in North Africa prior to his capture, and a green embroidered handkerchief. Overall very good.

A fine archive of photographs and documents related to the work of notable Third Reich sculptor KURT SCHMID-EHMEN (1901-1968), who designed monumental 'Reichsadler' eagle sculptures for the German Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exhibition, the Reich Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg and the 'Fedherrnhalle', and is credited with originating the design. The lot includes four original 3.25 x 4.5 photographs of the Reich Party Grounds, three of which show Schmid-Ehmen at work on the giant stone eagle installed thereat, two bearing Heinrich Hoffman back stamps; a group of seven approx. 6 1/2 x 8 in. photographs featuring images of Schmid-Ehmen's bust sculpture of Gauleiter and Deputy Prime Minister of Bavaria ADOLF WAGNER (1890-1944), showing it at various angles, printed on period-correct Agfa-Brovira paper, all smeared with traces of grey clay, indicating that they were used by Schmid-Ehmen as artist's references during the sculpting of the bust; a group of five b/w photo prints, ranging in size from 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 in. to 7 x 9 1/2 in. showing the resulting bust of Wagner as both the clay original and the final bronze copy, all again printed on period paper; a 12 x 15 1/2 in. print of Schmid-Ehmen's sculpture 'The Spear Carrier', which was later purchased by Adolf Hitler, unfortunately marred by a heavy horizontal crease; two 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. snapshots showing Schmid-Ehman viewing two additional sculptures; a 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. snapshot showing Adolf Wagner with an unidentified woman; a 3 1/2 x 4 in. snapshot showing two unidentified women, likely Schmid-Ehmen's wife and mother; and a 6 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. b/w/ photo portrait presenting a bust view of Schmid-Ehmen, likely taken immediately postwar. The lot is rounded out by three documents related to Schmid-Ehmen and his family, including a D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Munich, May 29, 1945, Hetty Schmid-Ehmen's 'Ausweis' issued by the American captors of the city one month following its fall. WITH: partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 12mo., Munich, July 6, 1945, a slip confirming that Kurt Schmid-Ehmen has registered himself with the police; and a war-date insurance card for a woman, on which Hetty Schmid-Ehmen is listed as the holder's employer. Several modern prints of photos showing Schmid-Ehmen and his work are also present. The American sergeant who took the photograph was apparently placed in charge of securing the Nazi's office. He writes on the verso: 'May 6, 1945 Germany To my wife Florrie - Taken from Himmler's desk at his home where old man Ducker now has his office - [Signed] F/Sgt. Lot of two war-date letters from Union Colonel Theodoric F. C. Dodd, a member of the 73rd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company B. Dodd writes to his wife Eliza, whom he refers to as ‘Lida’ in his letters. The first letter is 4pp. 4to., Louisville, Oct. 16, 1862, in part: ‘...On October 1, we were ordered to leave Louisville. We took up our line of march towards the interior of the state...following up Gen. Bragg who commanded his retreat as soon as Buell had given him time to supply himself with winter forage!!...We accidentally got too close to Bragg at Perryville and he gave us a severe battle...I cannot escape the conviction that the conduct of this war is in very unsafe hands...The men are put on half rations in a state abounding in all the luxuries of life and also abounding in Rebels of the darkest, most contemptable size. One man died today out of our regiment from exhaustion....We marched all day and all night over a hot and dusty turnpike and about 4 o’ clock in the morning I fell out and was arrested!!!!...A few days ago General Crittenden (God bless him) told General Buell (God curse him!) that he was a traitor!...Bragg and Buell came into Ky. together...Bragg stopped 28 miles from Louisville and commenced foraging and recruiting...Buell came to Louisville and received a reinforcement almost double his previous number. He kept this force at Louisville until Bragg had foraged to his hearts content...Buell then started in pursuit of Bragg...but has not caught him yet!!...You have heard long’ere I suppose of the battle at Cave Springs and Perryville. It was a bloody affair. Our regiment done nothing but look on...I must ask you again Lida to be very careful of your health. You can be careful, I can’t...’ The second letter, 4pp. 8vo., Nashville, Tennessee, Dec. 19, 1862, reads in part: ‘...I have been almost overwhelmed with your sweet letters for a couple of days...When I arrived in Nashville...I was a pretty sick boy with typhoid fever...Well dear there was a day or two before I left camp and for two days after I got into the hospital that I was not able to write...I’m entirely free from disease. Yet I shall remain here until I think I am fast able for anything... As much as I love, oh, love so much to see my darling it would be imprudent you to come here...’ He goes on to explain why their visit would be ‘unsatisfactory’, concluding the letter with loving sentiments. Both letters bear some spotting throughout, with trivial holes and tears that do not intrude on the text. This lot is accompanied by a tintype photo of an unidentified man although presumed to be Dodd himself as this lot came directly from his descendants. The photo is presented in an ornate oval brooch; WITH a Duke’s Cigarettes booklet, 15 pp. 1.5 x 2.75 in., [n.p., n.d.], giving a short history of Union General, Don Carlos Buell. ALFRED HITCHCOCK ATTRIBUTED SCRIPT FOR HIS 'STRANGERS ON A TRAIN' (1899 - 1980) English film director and a master of suspense and technique, his films included 'Psycho' and 'North by Northwest'. An important piece of film history, the final script of the psychological film noir thriller 'Strangers On a Train', attributed as having belonged to the film's director, Alfred Hitchcock, and including a pencil sketch of a set. It is bound with an approx. 200pp. 'Index to Breakdown', a shot-by-shot typed breakdown of the film, annotated throughout. The 9 x 11 in. 308pp. 4to. script bears a pale blue cover page ink-stamped: 'FINAL PART 1 STRANGERS ON A TRIAL OCT. 18, 1950'. An oblong 8vo. transmittal sheet which follows indicates that this was script no. 73. and at the top right in a period hand appears the name of its owner: 'Hitchcock'. On the last page of the script appears a sketch of a top view of what appears to be a bedroom or perhaps a sleeper car, with a hallway shown at the left and another, indistinct sketch at the bottom. The 'Index to Breakdown', 3pp., follows the script and lists all interior and exterior shots in the film, location, and time of day shot (or appears to have been shot). The remainder of the book, about 200pp., corresponds with the 'Index to Breakdown'. Every scene is devoted to one page and indicates the set name, cast members included and wardrobe changes, synopsis of action, extras to be used, and essential props. These pages are almost all lightly annotated, many in two different hands which we cannot place. The notes generally relate to casting and set location, other notes indicate if a scene has been cut, or if locations have changed. At some point, this script was apparently gifted to either a cast member or another individual close to the production. At the head of the first page of the script, Hitchcock signs his name in full and adds his trademark self-portrait sketch at the left. On the same page, starring actor FARLEY GRANGER (1925-2011) has also signed beside his first line in the film ('Guy Haines'). On the next page, the script is also signed by KASEY ROGERS (as 'Laura Eliot' who portrayed 'Miriam') and by PATRICIA HITCHCOCK ('Barbara Morton'), who also was Hitchcock's daughter and only child. The front cover and Hitchcock receipt both show loss at the bottom, the cover worn with tape about the edges, rear cover is not present, otherwise very good. In custom clamshell box. 'Strangers On a Train' was shot in the autumn of 1950 and released by Warner Bros. on June 30, 1951, starring Farley Granger, Ruth Roman, and Robert Walker. The story concerns two strangers who meet on a train, one of whom is a psychopath who suggests that they 'exchange' murders so that both will have alibis clearing themselves and neither would have a motive. The film marked a renaissance for Hitchcock, after several years of low enthusiasm for his late-1940s output.

French school; late 18th century."Portrait of a clergyman.Oil on canvas. It presents faults, tears, repainting, and frame of the 19th century.Measurements: 60 x 50 cm; 71 x 60 cm (frame).Portrait of a gentleman that presents the bust of an adult man, this one is dressed with a dark blue toga. This feature highlights the pearly colour of his skin, which becomes the main focus of the piece's illumination. This is a device by means of which the artist enhances the figure's corporeality and luminosity. The position of the body, upright and with a straight back, combines a casual, natural appearance with an air of distinguished authority. This is reinforced by the presence of the wig, which indicates his profession. It is worth noting that a square white ribbon is placed over the large cross on the sitter's head, alluding to the collar. The sitter also looks directly at the viewer, establishing a relationship with him. The figure is set in an interior of neutral ochre tones, which monumentalises the figure of the sitter and focuses the viewer's attention on the main subject of the work.During this century a new concept of portraiture was born, one that would evolve over the course of the century and unify all the national schools: the desire to capture the personality of the human being and his character, beyond his external reality and social rank, in his effigy. During the previous century, portraiture had become established among the upper classes and was no longer reserved solely for the court.

Dutch School, c. 1700."Portrait of a musician.Oil on canvas. Re-tinted.It presents restorations.Measurements: 43 x 32 cm; 48 x 37,5 cm (frame). The author of this work conceives a portrait in an elegant and complex way, creating a trompe l'oeil and placing the main character behind a window formed by a semicircular arch, which ends in a sill where there are several elements that seem to stand out from the space, such as the book and the embroidered ribbon. The figure smiles amiably as he plays the violin, directing his art at the viewer. This is not only a portrait of a musician, but the author recreates a scene in which he exalts the viewer's senses by paying tribute to the arts. The relief in the foreground, showing small children playing with a goat and a mask, refers to classical sculpture, the book to poetry, the violin clearly alludes to music, the background shows a space dominated by an easel with a painting, and the perfect semicircular arch highlights the role of architecture. Thus, with the exception of dance and rhetoric, the author brings together in this scene all the disciplines that were known as the liberal or fine arts.
