Harris Brown (1864-1948) - Portrait of Lady Ethel Adeline Meysey-Thompson (nee Pottinger), later Baroness Knaresborough (1864-1922), oval oil on canvas, signed and dated '02, 104 x 84 cm, unframed, the reverse with handwritten label 'No. 6 Lady Meysey-Thompson, Harris Brown', stuck to top stretcher Note: Lady Meysey-Thompson was the wife of Sir Henry Meysey-Thompson and the family seat was Kirby Hall until 1911. Harris Brown is known to have visited Kirby Hall on various occasions (see entry to Kirby Hall Visitor Book Sept. 16 1904, lot 864 in this sale). Harris Brown painted Lady Meysey-Thompson, and an engraving of the same composition of the present painting is in the National Portrait Gallery. The whereabouts of the original painting is unknown, but the present picture could be a preliminary study by the artist. Also including drawings by Lady Wallscourt, Lady Wharincliffe and Mrs Stafford, leather covered book with cut steel decoration, mostly signed, mainly stuck down Prov: Lord Francis Leveson-Gower - politician, writer, traveller, art patron and founder trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, inherited the title 1st Earl Ellesmere in 1833. Mrs Stafford - Elizabeth Sutherland Leveson-Gower became Duchess of Sutherland, later Countess of Sutherland was the mother of Francis Egerton and was once described as one other most controversial figures in Scottish history. Two of her watercolours are held in the Tate Collection.
