A General Service Medal 1918-62 to Guardsman Patrick John Tooze, Grenadier Guards, clasp: Palestine 1945-48 (2628339 GDSM. P. TOOZE. GREN. GDS.), nearly extremely fine and toned; together with the recipient's bed plate, by Gaunt, his certificate of service, a uniformed portrait photograph wearing his GSM, a Defence Medal, and other items. Enlisted 14th August 1945. Served with the British Army of the Rhine and in the Middle East. Transferred to the Reserve in 1953 with conduct assessed as "Exemplary"
Florence Nightigale interest: a bronze Royal British Nurses Association badge, Margaret M. Beveridge 3882; together with a copy of a religious publication with manuscript pencil dedication to Nurse Beveridge: "Margaret Beveridge New Zealand with Florence Nightingale's best wishes London July 20/97"; also Beveridge's R.N.B.A. Trained Nurse's Registration Certificate, her portrait photograph, and other items. Margaret Beveridge was born on the 31st August 1862 in Kinross. Her family sold their estate and moved to New Zealand in December 1892, where Margaret entered Christchurch Hospital as a student nurse, qualifying in May 1896. She married Alexander Brooke Boyd at St Mary's Church, Christchurch, in July 1898.
An Indian Mutiny Medal 1857 to Lieutenant Robert Fannin Stoney, 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot, clasp: Lucknow (LIEUT R.F. STONEY. 53RD REGT.), a little edge bruising and abrasion, nearly extremely fine and attractively toned; together with an overpainted uniformed portrait photograph of the recipient, wearing his medal ribbon; a letter written by him to his parents, from Lucknow, April 7th 1858; a uniformed portrait of his Brother Richard B. Stoney, Royal Artillery (died 1861), documents pertaining to Richard's training at Woolwich; and other items.
Royal Aircraft Factory Farnborough: a fascinating collection of First World War era photographs and ephemera, being part of the papers of Major Charles Kemble Butler-Stoney, Royal Flying Corps and RAF, including: a photographs album containing many studies of early aircraft in flight and on the ground, H.M. airship Delta, a Parseval type airship, a group portrait of a 1914 shooting team armed with the .303 S.M.L.E., various scenes at the R.A.F. Farnborough, group and single portraits; correspondence including letters from various individuals serving in France (including Bowes Butler-Stoney, see lot 280), some giving details of the fighting; personal effects comprising a silver vesta case, a combined vesta and sovereign case, a pocket book, and an open faced silver pocket watch; and other similar items. The canvas tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a stable condition but have suffered from wear and abrasion. Areas of overpaint are evident both on top of the varnish as well as below, although the extent is unclear. The varnish layer is even but discoloured with a smeary layer of surface dirt lying on top.

It seems reasonable to conclude that they were painted as a pair.Condition report: Canvas has been lined. There is some craquelure apparent. Some surface dirt across the surface and what appears to be an old dammar varnish that obscures much of the surface making any reading under UV light difficult. That said, there are no significant signs of damage or restoration apparent that have been done recently. Would benefit from a light surface clean. Within an 18th century carved frame.

Florence by Carbone/Van Dyck's pupil Genoa', on a label verso, oil on canvas48.5 x 38.5cmCondition report: The painting is executed in oil on linen canvas which has been lined at an early stage in its history. The canvas tension is adequate and there are minor undulations across the surface. At the lower left corner is a raised area of canvas and abrasion to the paint layers caused by an object behind the painting, possibly a join in the stretcher. The paint layer has developed a network of age cracks which are slightly raised with a loss in the sitter’s hair. An old damage to the sitter’s left eye has been repaired and overpainted, this area is smooth and glossy. There are a few touches of overpaint across the face. The varnish has yellowed and become matte, no longer adequately saturating the darker paint layers. There is a light layer of surface dust present.

The dimensions of the painting were probably once larger than it now appears. The small area of curtain now visible extends over the tacking margins and it is likely the painting has been cut down. At the upper edge is a dent with associated paint loss and there are other minor deformations to the surface caused by impact. The paint layer is in a good condition overall with a few small losses, mainly around the edges. The varnish has yellowed and become dull with a layer of surface dirt present. A few localised areas of overpaint are present around the edges of the painting. Wooden battens have been secured to the sides and bottom edges of the painting.
English School, mid-18th centuryPortrait of a gentleman in a brown coat, green waistcoat and white lace stockenamel, oval 4 x 3.4cmCondition report: There are several scratches or lines across the the image, see illustration. The discolouration verso seems to be tarnishing. It is possible that the exposed metal area was covered with a sticker or something which has now been removed, exposing the metal beneath, while the edges have been left blackened by dirt and grime or possibly paint.

The canvas tension is good and there are minor deformations across the surface caused by impact. Scattered losses are present, mainly around the edges of the painting. Some of the age cracks are slightly raised. The painting has a thick varnish layer present which has degraded and darkened over time.

There appears to be a small hole near the top of the forehead too. Surface dirt, including a smudge of orange (paint?) near lower edge, to the the right of the face. Not seen outside of glazed frame.
