The school was formed in 1820, for the daughters of Anglican clergy and officers who had served during the Napoleonic Wars.Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but the picture is in plane overall. There a small hole in the canvas near the bottom edge with associated pant loss. The paint layer has localised areas of loss and flaking paint. Old damages in the background have been repaired through lining and have been filled and retouched. Areas overpaint are slightly mismatched to the original and matte. The painting has a varnish layer which is dull and has become yellowed with age. There is a thick layer of dust and dirt on both the front and reverse of the painting.

English School, c.1830Portrait of a lady, thought to be HRH Princess Augusta Sophia, three-quarter length seated, in a red dress and feathered hat, holding a scrolloil on canvas127 x 102cm, in a heavy gilt frameCondition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are stable but have textural issues caused as the paint layer has dried including drying cracks in the sitter’s face and uneven surface issues in the red dress and black hat. These issues are exacerbated by the degraded varnish which is no longer adequately saturating the darker paint layers. There are localised scuffs and scratches to the surface, most disturbingly above the sitter’s mouth. Areas of overpaint are present in the sitter’s face and hands, the overpaint is well matched to the original and covers cracks in the paint layer below. There is a thick layer of surface dirt on both the front and reverse of the canvas.

Austrian School, mid-19th centuryPortrait of a young gentleman, said to be the uncle of Cardinal Piffl, Archbishop of Vienna, half length, in a blue coat and yellow waistcoatoil on canvas58 x 47cmCondition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. Numerous small holes and punctures in the canvas have been repaired from the reverse with canvas patches. The largest hole is above the sitter’s head with an area of paint loss that has not been filled and retouched. Smaller losses have been covered with overpaint which is poorly matched to the original. To the left of the sitter’s head is a line of raised paint, probably caused by impact from the reverse. There are other localised areas of raised paint across the surface. The varnish is dull and uneven with a layer of surface dirt present.

This would not be permitted in British Regular units, but Volunteers were not so constrained.We are grateful to Christopher Joll for his assistance with this catalogue entry.Condition report: Oil on a small wooden panel. The support and paint layers are in a good condition overall. There is one localised area of raised paint to the right of the sitter’s head. The varnish is even and slightly dull with several matte splashes across the surface. The painting has been framed with a cut out cardboard oval, this appears to be stuck to the surface of the painting in some areas but it is possible the composition extends to the edges of the panel.

The canvas tension is adequate and the picture is in plane. In the upper half of the background is raised and vulnerable with a few scattered losses already present. The rest of the paint layer is stable, the lining process has caused the canvas texture to become prominent in the paint layer. There are localised areas of overpaint which have darkened and become matte. The varnish is dull and discoloured with a thick layer of surface dirt present.

The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is in a very good condition overall. There is an old, vertical damage below the sitter’s hands which has been repaired and retouching. At the top of the sitter’s hair and above this in the background are areas where the varnish is disrupted and there is darkened overpaint present. The varnish is glossy, clear and even. There are several accretions across the surface.

The painting does not have an overall varish layer, in areas of gloss it seems likely that a layer has been locally applied by the artist. In the background at the upper right corner are dark splashes. There is an uneven layer of surface dirt across the picture.

The canvas has good tension and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is stable but has suffered from abrasion and localised losses. In localised paint passages a fine network of age cracks has formed. Areas of overpaint are applied quite liberally across the background and covers some of the deeper scratches in the paint layer. The varnish is dull and has become brittle with age with abrasion and scuffs. There is a layer of surface dirt present.

Fairfax, on the Surrender of Colchester', miniature, oval5.2 x 4.4cm, in a gold mount, tested as approximately 18ct goldMary Lucas was born c.1622 and married Sir Peter Killigrew in October 1625. Adriaen Hanneman painted Mary Lucas in 1636 and the portrait is part of the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia. Mary Lucas came from a family of Royalists and her brother, Sir Charles Lucas, was executed by firing squad in 1648 following the siege of Colchester. Her sister, Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, has received significant literary attention as she lived in exile as Queen Henrietta Maria's lady-in-waiting at the court of Louis XIV, but is best remembered for her publications of poetry and philosophical writings.Condition report: Paint loss at lower left edge. Dust under the glass. Some tiny brown spots throughout, but most noticeable on the face, chest and ruff. Overall the colours are a little dull. Some very light scratches to the glass. On case verso there is a small dent lower right and some remnants of old stickers.

English School, c.1805Portrait of a General officer in uniformminiature on ivory7.1 x 5.7cm, oval, in a gold frame with blue enamel, plaited hair and vacant collets verso, tested as approximately 9ct goldThis is a portrait of a General officer of the period c.1805. His exact rank is determined by the arrangement of the buttons on his tunic and the chain pattern lace on the facings. The sitter’s buttons and lace are grouped in threes, as worn by a Lieutenant General. The curious black line across his brow looks to be an eye patch, albeit that the patch itself appears to be over the sitter's right ear. This unusual arrangement may have been for reasons of both vanity and accuracy.We are grateful to Christopher Joll for his assistance with this catalogue entry.Condition report: Colours a little faded. Some yellowing, especially in the sky and on the white blouse. Some flecks of dirt lower left. There appears to be a little damage in the form of tiny scratches to the left of the buttons although these may be intentional, also in the armpit. The paint on the shoulder looks a little faint, possibly rubbed. Dirt on the glass. Some deep scratches to the glass near the centre. A couple of light dents to the cases, and stickers and remnants of stickers verso. There are spaces where once there were pearls verso.

Some scratched and light abrasions to the paint at edges, and the paint looks a little rubbed and thin in places throughout. Some pale cloudy areas, although this is not obvious. The right side of the sitter’s coat appears overpainted as it is a darker colour. There appears to be some overpainted damage at left and right edges. Dust and surface dirt. A few tiny dents to frame. One jewel is slightly different colour and shape to the others, so could be a replacement. The case is worn, dirty, with scratches and there are remnants of stickers verso. Hinged for a bracelet.

William Bate (c.1759-c.1845)Portrait of The Lady Elizabeth Hamilton as 'Beatrice Cenci' by Guido Reni (1575-1642) with long fair hair, wearing a white turban and gownsigned 'W Bate' and signed and dated 'W Bate/1838' verso enamel on copper, oval 8 x 6cm, gold bezel, tested as approximately 9ct goldBeatrice Cenci, a Roman noblewoman, plotted in 1598 with three family members to murder her abusive father, Count Francesco Cenci. He had been sent to prison for his abuse to her and her family, but released early because of his noble status. Feeling there was no other option, the family conspired to kill him. When the plot was discovered after his disappearance, the family were arrested. The much publicised trial in 1599 Rome gave rise to an enduring legend about her and she has become a symbol of defiance against the arrogance of the ruling class. She, along with her co-conspirators, was beheaded in 1599.

The case is lightly worn and dirty, and there is a little damage lower left. There are remnants of stickers verso, and the metal verso is distorted and uneven and with many small indents.

Yellowing around the eyes. A little wear to the gold edging. Some dirt to the jewels and remnants of stickers verso. Wear to the edges of the jewelled border.
