RAF Prisoner of War group - 1109074 Sgt Reginald Dent RAF, POW No 760 M.Stalag 357 Germany. 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Africa Star + North Africa 1942-44 clasp, War Medal. His original YMCA Book full of hand drawn caricatures of fellow POW's. Dent was a good amateur artist and the lot includes his sketch book with self portrait. 1944 Newspaper article about Dent of Batley, Yorkshire. Africa - Rhodesia: Rhodesian General Service Medal to MAJ. A. M. DUTHIE. Major Ashley Mackintosh Duthie, Medical Doctor. Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons who served in the Rhodesian Army Medical Corps circa mid 1960’s into Early 70’s. He was also a lecturer at the Godfrey Huggins School of Medicine at the University of Rhodesia in Salisbury (Harare). Major Duthie was also Para qualified. Small edge bruise. NEF. Lot also comes with super large portrait photo.

First World War.- Letters Written by William Frank Evelyn Denison of Ossington, Notts., to his Mother, 2 photographic portrait plates, ink presentation inscription to front free endpaper, endpapers a little browned, original cloth, lettered in gilt, spine darkened, spine ends and corners a little bumped, 4to, [?1918].⁂ Rare, COPAC lists Imperial War Museum copy only. W.F.Evelyn applied for commission in 1916 and served with the Sherwood Foresters 15th Battalion from 1917 until he was mortally wounded at Curlu Wood in March 1918.
English School (circa 1900) Portrait of Sir Anthony Hope (Anthony Hope Hawkins), oil on canvas, 283 x 220 mm. (11 1/4 x 8 3/4 in).⁂ Prolific English novelist and playwright, particularly of adventure novels. Remembered in particular for: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894), and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898).
Hypertrichosis.- Gaywood (Richard, active 1650-1680) Portrait of Barbara van Beck, three-quarter length, with one hand on an organ, engraving, on laid paper without watermark, trimmed lacking lettered title below, otherwise a good impression, sheet 190 x 150 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 7/8 in), one small nick upper left, unframed, [circa 1656].Provenance:Denstone College Library (stamp verso)⁂ Born in Augsburg, Germany, in 1629, van Beck achieved international renown for her hair growth, and travelled Europe appearing in shows. She travelled to London in 1655, and in 1660 she travelled to appear in a show at Beauvais, where Gaywood's 1658 variant engraved portrait was used as the advertisement to the exhibition. The Wellcome collection hold another copy of the present early engraved portrait (no. 1926i), and the British Museum hold a copy of the later state from 1658 (see acc. no. 1851,0308.45).
Quaker.- Preston (Thomas, fl. 1740-1785) Portrait of James Naylor, looking to the right, wearing broad-rimmed hat, mezzotint with engraving, on laid paper without watermark, sheet 240 x 160 mm. (9 1/2 x 6 1/4 in), handling creases, minor surface dirt, [circa 1660]; together with William Richardson's 'Titus Oates', 1810, and a variant copy of Gillray's 'Political-Candour' [cf. BM Satires 10414], 215 x 170 mm. (8 1/2 x 6 3/4 in), all unframed, (3).Provenance:Denstone College Library (stamps verso)Literature:(Naylor) Chaloner Smith 3⁂ Naylor, an English Quaker leader, was among the members of the Valiant Sixty, a group of early Quaker preachers and missionaries. In 1656, he achieved national notoriety when he re-enacted Christ's Palm Sunday entry into Jerusalem by entering Bristol on a horse. He was imprisoned and charged with blasphemy.
