G. Emmison), the sitter's daughter,By whom gifted to Gwen Curnock,Thence by descent to the present vendorLots 102 and 103 are rare surviving examples of the painting of Ethel Moorhead, most famous for her work as a suffragette. In 1914, she became the first Scottish suffragette to be forcibly fed and also gained renown for throwing an egg at Winston Churchill. As an artist, she is believed to have studied in Paris under Alfons Mucha before entering Whistler's studio, the Atelier Carmen. She also edited This Quarter, an arts journal which published the work of James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Francis Picabia and Man Ray.The sitter, Ethel's older sister Alice, was also famous for her pioneering work as one of the first practising female physicians and surgeons in Scotland. In 1894, she established the first all female practice in Scotland, before setting up Dundee Women's Hospital and Dispensary, primarily a maternity hospital exclusive to female staff and patients. Tragically, Alice herself died during childbirth in 1910. Her daughter, Margaret Moorhead Langwill, inherited the present portraits. The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but the picture is generally in plane. Pin holes are present in the corners. There is an area of flaking and loss at the lower right hand side where age cracks have formed and become unstable. Apart from this area, the paint layers are in a good condition overall. The painting has a thin, uneven varnish layer present. In ultraviolet light the thin varnish can be seen, in the hands areas of paint appear dark, but this is due to artist reworking and uneven varnish rather than overpaint. There is a light layer of surface dirt present.

Examination under UV light reveals scattered retouching to the face and broader overpaint to the upper left hand section in the sitter's hair and background. The frame with losses as illustrated.
Circle of Franz Xaver Winterhalter (German, 1805-1873) Portrait of a lady wearing a white satin evening gown and flowers in her hair inscribed in pencil to the stretcher 'Empress Elisabeth of Austria' oil on canvas 68 x 54cm The hairstyle and dress in the present portrait suggest a likely execution date of circa 1850-60. While the smooth brushwork on the skin of the sitter is closely comparable with similar portraits by Winterhalter, certain stylistic elements are more reminiscent other artists in his circle such as Friedrich von Amerling (1803-1887).

English School (19th century) Portrait of a huntsman with his dog in a landscape, a country house beyondoil on canvas60 x 50cmAn identification of the house as Belford Hall, Northumberland, has been suggested.Relined. Overall in good, stable, clean, restored condition. Remnants of old varnish visible under UV light in the darker passages of the painting. Evidence of a repaired tear to left hand side of the image in the sky, but otherwise the paintwork appears predominantly original with only very small scattered retouchings. The frame overall in good, stable order with light wear and some minor losses, the most significant to the bottom right hand corner (see images).
Circle of Michael Dahl (Swedish, 1659-1743) Portrait of a woman in a yellow dress inscribed 'Casandra' lower right oil on canvas, unframed 75 x 63.5cm Relined. In stable, restored condition. Examination under UV light reveals significant scattered retouching throughout, though retoration appears generally well matched to the original. Surface dirty and would benefit from a clean.

Louis XV'set into a gold-plated frame in fausse-montre style5cm diameterThe principal sitter bears a close resemblance to the duchesse de Châteauroux, a mistress of King Louis XV of France, most famously depicted by Jean-Marc Nattier. One of five notable de Nesle sisters, four of whom would become the mistress of the king, Marie-Anne was renowned for her blue eyes and childlike smile, features likewise depicted in the present portrait.Miniature in excellent condition with no losses to the paintwork or damage to the support. Colours vibrant and original. Frame in good, stable condition with minor surface wear to the reverse.

Breakspeare' and dated 1877titled, signed and dated verso 'A Wandering Minstrel / WAB 1877' with further figural sketchoil on canvas91 x 70cmProvenance:Believed to have been acquired directly from the artist by the present vendor's great grandfather in Birmingham in 1877Although the inscription to the reverse identifies the subject simply as 'a wandering minstrel', the close likeness to the self portrait of 1876 by Breakspeare, now in the Ashmolean (no. WA1966.24), indicates that the young artist almost certainly used himself as a model for the present picture. Both works were painted shortly before the painter moved to Paris in 1879.Canvas unlined with artist's original inscriptions and sketch to the reverse. Overall in good, original, stable condition. No signs of restoration visible under UV. Craquleure throughout commensurate with age. Some isolated areas of minor paint separation, most notably in the background to the left of the artist's head. Stretcher mark visible accross the upper section. Remnants of old discoloured varnish which give the flesh tones a patchy apprearance in the places.

Photographs of Ellen Terry playing this role are in the National Portrait Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum. Terry was one the great actresses of the late 19th and early 20th century. She rose to fame in London starring in Shakespeare plays as a child and, in a career that lasted almost seven decades, continued to find success on stage until 1920.

There is some abrasion around the edges from framing and a diagonal scuff at the left side. There appears to be a few small areas of overpaint, on the scuff and left edge. The varnish is probably original and appears slightly dull and milky with a light layer of dirt.

English School (17th-18th century) after Gerrit Van Honthorst Portrait of Sophia, Princess Palatine of the Rhine, later Electress of Hanoveroil on canvas laid on panel71 x 59cmThis work derives from Honthorst's original composition of 1641, now in the Detroit Institute of Arts (72.860). Sophia was the daughter of Frederick V of the Palatinate and Elizabeth Stuart, known as the 'Winter King and Queen of Bohemia'. As granddaughter of King James I of England, she was heiress presumptive to the throne but died months before she was to become Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. Her son, King George I, succeeded Queen Anne and the British throne has since been composed entirely of Sophia's descendants.
