Los 388

18th Century Continental School - Oil painting - Half length portrait of a young man wearing military dress, relined canvas 25.75ins x 19.5ins, in gilt frame Provenance: An ancestor of the current vendor. The work was in Venice in the 1950's and thence by family descent. Note: The sitter thought to be Van Hour (?), is understood by the vendor to be an Austrian relative on the Venetian part of his family. The sitter in this case is the son of the subject depicted in lot 387, apparently by the same hand.Condition ReportSome repainting/touching in to the upper left and across to the upper right corners. His cheek, natural left side, shows restoration extending slightly into lower lips. There is some scattered restoration to the lower part of the background. Small area of restoration to his chest, lateral right side. Frame - appears to have its original gilt finish. Some evidence of historic beetle attack showing as scattered flight holes particularly to upper and right sides. More extensive flight holes shown to stretcher, and back of frame.
