[JAMES B. A. 'JIMMY']: (1915-2008) British Squadron Leader with the Royal Air Force. A Prisoner of War from 1940-45, James made numerous efforts to escape from various POW and Concentration Camps, most famously from Stalag Luft III in March 1944 as part of the 'Great Escape'. A small collection of personal belongings and artifacts etc. previously owned by Jimmy and Madge James including a large original pen and ink caricature of Jimmy James signed by the cartoonist Brian Platt, 25th May 1986 (folded and with some extensive surface creasing) an original pastel and chalk portrait of Madge James signed ('Dowse') by the artist, a small wooden box with floral carvings and an inlaid oval floral design to the top, a roughly cut stone paperweight (?), small leather wallets (2), letter and document folders, an insurance certificate and driving licence holder bearing the coat of arms of Canterbury to the cover, The Book of Common Prayer bearing a presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, 'Bertram A. James from his Mother & Father', 22nd September 1924, several notebooks of various sizes bearing miscellaneous notes in the hands of Jimmy and Madge James including his notes on Christian unity, the remission of sins etc., a small pocket-sized hardback edition of Celtic Prayers of Yesterday and Today with a presentation inscription from Jimmy James to his wife, November 1998, a Swiss made wrist watch with leather strap, paperback edition of The Lazy Man's Way to Riches with several loosely inserted notes in the hand of Jimmy James, a guide book to Prague, a large folded colour map of Hannover in Germany, Army/Air First Edition photolithographed at the War Office, 1943, a small cardboard box annotated by Madge James with her husband's name and the additional words 'Military Cross & other medals', also bearing a partial red wax seal and Jimmy James's initials, the contents now including a small number of Remembrance Day poppies and an envelope annotated by both Jimmy and Madge James individually, 'MC Ribbon', and including two pieces of purple and white vertical striped moire ribbon, presumably those issued with James's original Military Cross awarded in May 1946. (4) and signed First Day Covers (4) by various allied military and naval leaders etc. of World War II including Harold Alexander (to the painter Frank O. BERLIN IRVING: (1888-1989) American Composer and Lyricist. A printed folio copy of the sheet music for the song My Wife's Gone to the Country Hurrah! Hurrah!, with words and music by Irving Berlin, George Whiting and Ted Snyder, as sung ('with great success') by May Shirk, published by Ted Snyder Co. of New York and featuring a colour illustrated cover by Frew and with a circular inset portrait of Shirk. Signed ('I Berlin') by Berlin with his name alone in blue fountain pen ink to a clear area of the cover. Some light age wear and a few small tears and creases to the edges and corners, about VG
CALLAS & DI STEFANO: CALLAS MARIA (1923-1977) American-born Greek Soprano & DI STEFANO GIUSEPPE (1921-2008) Italian Tenor. A printed oblong 4to programme for An Evening with Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano at the Royal Festival Hall, London, 26th November and 2nd December 1973, signed by both Callas ('Maria Callas') and Di Stefano ('Di Stefano') in black inks with their names alone to the title page. With an attractive colour portrait of the singers to the front cover. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG The present programme represents the final performance of Callas in London in what was unofficially billed as her 'London Farewell Concert'. Callas and Di Stefano were accompanied by pianist Ivor Newton and the programme included pieces by Verdi, Bizet and Puccini.
SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925) American Painter. A.L.S., John S. Sargent, on two sides of a correspondence card, Tite Street, Chelsea, n.d., to Mr. Burnand. The artist writes, in full, 'I am sorry to say I cannot produce a photograph of myself - have not had one taken for twenty five years and am not likely to have one done'. VG London's National Portrait Gallery only posses two photographs of Sargent, one taken by Alvin Langdon Coburn in 1907 and the other by James E. Purdy in 1903. Based upon these dates, the present letter would have been written in the 1880s.
DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish Surrealist Painter. Book signed and inscribed, a hardback edition of Dali's Mustache by Salvador Dali and Philippe Halsman, First Edition published by Simon and Schuster, New York, 1954. The book features 30 monochrome images of Dali (and his mustache, in typically surrealist poses) and represents a photographic interview between Dali and Halsman. Signed and inscribed by Dali to the front pastedown and across the front free endpaper in typically exuberant fashion, 'Pour Peter, Hommage de Dali', the artist adding various black circles to the conclusion and some of the intersections of the letters which form the inscription and further adding two original pen and ink drawings in his hand, the first of an ant and the second of two individuals, one a female, standing in full length poses alongside each other as they look upwards to observe a shooting star in the sky. Bound in the original publisher's glossy boards with a surrealist portrait of the one-eyed Dali to the front and a caption to the verso stating Warning! This book is preposterous. Some light overall age wear to the boards, most noticeable at the edges of the spine, otherwise about VG Ants are a recurring insect to appear in Dali's works and have been said to symbolise death, decay and immense sexual desire.

TURNER J. M. W.: (1775-1851) English Painter. A rare illustrated A.L.S., with his initials J M W T, one page, 12mo, n.p. ('at home'), 9th January n.y. ('1/2 past 1 Thursday night'), to [Andrew] Geddes. Turner informs his correspondent that the Council have fixed the date of Friday 19th, 'so I hope you will or can make the [dinner, at this point in the letter Turner has added a small illustration of a knife, fork and spoon] for Tuesday….' With integral address leaf in Turner's hand, again signed by him with his initials ('JMWT'; a little smudged) in the lower left corner of the address panel and bearing the remnants of a small black wax seal. A charming letter enhanced by Turner's small original drawing. Together with an A.L.S., Adela Geddes, three pages, 8vo, Brunswick Gardens, Campden Hill, 17th December 1869, to a gentleman [Rev. C. W. Furse]. Geddes announces 'At last I am happy to be able to fulfil my promise and enclose you the note from our friend Turner' and continues 'It really is a valuable memento; as he so very rarely took the trouble to write an answer to any of our invitations', further adding 'In my search for this one I came upon another written with pencil upon the back of my own note, and he has absolutely sealed this one. I am happy you are to be the possessor of it, as like myself you are a true lover of this great man'. Also including a pale blue envelope headed in an unidentified hand 'To be preserved' and further annotated 'A note of J. M. W. Turner R.A. to Mr. Geddes. Given to the Revd. C. W. Furse Decr. 1869 by the widow of Mr. Geddes'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, generally VG, 3 Andrew Geddes (1783-1844) Scottish Portrait Painter & Etcher, elected as an associate of the Royal Academy in 1832. Husband of Adela Geddes (1791-1881) from 1827, the youngest daughter of the miniaturist Nathaniel Plimer (1757-1822).
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE: (1864-1901) French Painter and Illustrator. An amusing A.L.S., T-Lautrec, on two sides of a correspondence card, n.p., n.d. (c.1892-94), to Francois [Gauzi] ‘Old chap’, in French. The artist states that his zany caretaker had sent his correspondent by post the text of a telegram which he must have received and continues to add that the police officers came for Bourges only, further enquiring about any news from Toulouse and his correspondent’s exhibition. The artist concludes his letter in a self-effacing manner, ‘I am preparing to clear off…..I’ve almost found a place for all my turnips at this point. Which means – you’ll be surprised – that I haven’t wasted my time. I’m feeling blue about it’. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Francois Gauzi (1862-1933) French Painter, Illustrator & Engraver, a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec who painted his portrait. Toulouse-Lautrec’s reference to his paintings as ‘navets’ (‘turnips’) might nowadays be more correctly translated as ‘daubs’. The artist had also used the same humble expression on other occasions, for example in a letter to his mother sending news of the opening of an exhibition and remarking that his ‘turnips’ had received good reviews from the press and critiques. Today, the French commonly use the word ‘navet’ to describe a bad movie.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish Painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. Book signed and inscribed, being a paperback edition of Portrait of Picasso by Roland Penrose, second completely revised and enlarged edition published by Lund Humphries Ltd., London, 1971, the first edition in 1956 issued to commemorate the artist's seventy-fifth birthday. Signed ('Picasso') by Picasso in blue ink to the front free endpaper, with an inscription in French to his friend and physician Dr. Jean Stehelin, dated 5th March 1972 in Picasso's hand. Some light staining to the lower edges of the cover and front free endpaper, not affecting the signature or inscription, G Jean Stehelin (1903-1973) French Doctor, the long-time physician and friend to Picasso. Stehelin died in Cannes less than three weeks after Picasso had passed away.
DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish Surrealist Painter. A fine book signed, twice, being a hardback edition of Dali - A Study of his Art-in-Jewels, edited by Lida Livingston and with a foreword by A. Hyatt Mayor and comments and captions by the artist, published by The New York Graphic Society, Greenwich, Connecticut, 1965. The book features 31 colour plate illustrations of jewels designed by Dali and which formed the collection of The Owen Cheatham Foundation. Signed ('Dali') by the artist in bold pencil with a typically large signature to the half title page and again signed ('Dali') in blue crayon with his name alone beneath his frontispiece portrait, the image being a close-up study of the artist by Philippe Halsman. Bound with a black cloth spine with gilt lettering and faux vellum boards featuring Dali's gilt stamped facsimile signature. Contained in the original colour illustrated slipcase. WARHOL ANDY: (1928-1987) American Pop Artist. A good signed colour 6 x 4 postcard, being a reproduction of Warhol's Marilyn Diptych (1962) featuring repeated images of the portrait of the actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. Signed ('Andy Warhol') in bold black ink by the artist with his name alone to a light area at the base of the image. About EX
SINATRA FRANK: (1915-1998) American Singer and Actor, Academy Award winner. A good signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Sinatra in a half length pose. Signed in bold blue ink across a clear area of the background, 'For Sol Siegel, It was a gasser! Francis'. An excellent signed portrait with a good association. Some slight creasing to the border of the lower right corner, otherwise VG Sol Siegel (1903-1982) American Film Producer whose films included High Society (1956) starring Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong.
MOONWALKERS: A good set of twelve individual signed pieces, cards, First Day Covers (3) etc., by each of the men who have walked on the moon, comprising Neil Armstrong (Apollo XI, the first man to walk on the moon; black ink signature to a block of six identical Jordanian postage stamps, each featuring Armstrong's portrait), Buzz Aldrin (Apollo XI, the second man to walk on the moon; bold blue ink signature on a piece), Charles Conrad (Apollo XII, the third man to walk on the moon; D.S., Charles Conrad, being a signed cheque, California, 1st February 1993, made payable in his hand to Nancy Conrad for the sum of $1000, his signature only very lightly affected by a bank cancellation), Alan Bean (Apollo XII, the fourth man to walk on the moon; ink signature on a coloured card, being the lower border of a photograph of Bean and bearing two United States postage stamps), Alan Shepard (Apollo XIV, the fifth man to walk on the moon; bold black ink signature on a piece neatly clipped from a photograph of the moon's surface), Edgar Mitchell (Apollo XIV, the sixth man to walk on the moon; black ink signature on a FDC commemorating Apollo XIV), Dave Scott (Apollo XV, the seventh man to walk on the moon; bold blue ink signature on a piece), Jim Irwin (Apollo XV, the eighth man to walk on the moon; bold black ink signature on an FDC commemorating Apollo XV), John Young (Apollo XVI, the ninth man to walk on the moon; bold black ink signature on an FDC commemorating the STS-1 launch), Charles Duke (Apollo XVI, the tenth man to walk on the moon; bold blue ink signature on a piece, adding Apollo 16 in his hand beneath his signature), Gene Cernan (Apollo XVII, the eleventh man to walk on the moon; bold black ink signature and four additional words in his hand on a piece) and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo XVII, the twelfth man to walk on the moon; bold black ink signature on a piece neatly clipped from the conclusion of a typed letter).
