Sherlock Holmes. An archive of memorabilia relating to the great Holmes actor Eille Norwood and his appearance in 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes, An Adventure of the Great Detective, Founded by J.E. Harold Terry and Arthur Rose, on the Stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle', early 1920s, comprising a fair copy typescript of the full play, approx. 100pp. in black type with red underscoring, text to rectos only, interleaved with a printed programme from the original production at the Prince's Theatre and twenty-five b & w photos of the production by Stage Photographic Company, each approx. 28 x 18 cm and similar sizes, all mounted on guards, orig. black limp morocco, upper cover titled in gilt, 4to, together with the Producer's [i.e. Norwood's] copy of the play, four Acts bound in four books, numerous pen and pencil amendments, three hand-drawn stage plans tipped in, orig. stapled paper wrappers with typed labels, slim 4to, plus a group of thirteen actors' part scripts incl. Norwood's marked copy for Holmes, orig. paper wrappers with typed labels, some soiling and wear, oblong 8vo, plus a contemporary signed b & w head and shoulders portrait photograph of Eille Norwood, by Dorothy Wilding, 20 x 15 cm, mounted with tissue backing signed by the photographer, signed inscription on mount beneath, 'To the Best of Nevvilo, from his Uncle Ted, Eille Norwood', plus an Autograph Letter Signed from Arthur Conan Doyle on undated letterhead, 'Dear Mr Norwood, I fear there is no chance. It would about break poor [H.A.] Saintsbury's heart, I think, Yours sincerely, A Conan Doyle', with Norwood's note at foot, 'In answer to a request to allow a new version of a play on Sherlock Holmes to be written', 1 page, 8vo, plus orig. envelope, postmark date 17th October 1921.
