ERNEST L. IPSEN [AMERICAN 1861-1959], OIL ON CANVAS, 1896, H 16", W 24", FARM SCENE: Signed and dated lower left; framed. Ernest Ludwig Ipsen was an American portrait painter. Ipsen was born in Malden, Massachusetts, the son of Danish parents . In 1913 he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1924.
EARLIEST PERIOD ""PORTRAIT JUMEAU"". Early pale bisque head incised ""0"" at the base of the neck. She has the sought after almond shaped eye cuts with big brown paperweight eyes, closed mouth with V-shaped upper lip with slight space between lips and nice highlighting, mauve shading above upper eyelids, and pierced earlobes. Body is original with eight separate ball joints, the desirable cupped fingers, and bears the original patina. There is no mark on the torso. She retains the original sheepskin wig over cork pate and wears a simple white cotton and lace dress with antique white leather shoes. SIZE: 15-1/2"" t (39cm). CONDITION: Very good; slight uneven coloring on both cheeks. 1-14045
TWO GERMAN BISQUE CHARACTER DOLLS. Larger of the two is a bisque shoulder head by Gebruder Heubach on cloth body with bisque lower hands. He has squinty eyes and a crooked mouth and is sometimes known to collectors as ""the spinach baby"". Smaller is a portrait of an older man by ""Dressel"" on a 5-pc composition body wearing original clothes. He is known as ""the farmer"" although the head is identical to the one used in the ""Uncle Sam"" doll. SIZE: Heubach: 13"" t (33cm). Farmer: 10"" (26cm). CONDITION: Heubach is missing part of back shoulder plate; farmer is very good. 1-14053
