FOLLOWER OF MICHIEL JANSZ. VAN MIEREVELT (1567-1641) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, PROBABLY FRANCIS BACON, VISCOUNT ST. ALBAN (1561-1626) Quarter length, wearing a black tunic with gilt brocade (probably the robes of Lord Chancellor), a lace collar and a black hat, holding a staff, within a painted oval, bears later inscription FRANCIS BACON VISCOUNT ST. ALBAN, oil on panel 70 x 53cm. * The composition derives from engravings of Bacon after uncertain originals of c.1618. A long half-length depiction of Bacon by John Vanderbank (c.1731), also after a lost original, bears striking similarities in terms of pose, dress and appearance although the right arm is in a different position (see National Portrait Gallery, Wodehouse bequest). An unattributed full-length version imitating the same composition may be seen at Montacute House (Somerset). ++ Bitumenous retouching in the corner spandrels; needs a clean; slightly thin in places
