Christie, Manson & Woods, Kings Street, London, Friday, June 1st 1934, Lot 69 Purchased by a Mr Whitaker for £52.10.00, thence by descent to the current vendor NB Louis Stanislas-Xavier of France 1755-1824, Comte de Provence was promoted to the Ordre de Saint-Esprit in February 1767, (Soixante-septième promotion, 2 février 1767) it is possible that this portrait commemorates this occasion. The noble house of Facingny-Lucinge et Colingy are descended by marriage from the Bourbons, via the marriage in 1823 to Charlotte Marie Augstine de Bourbon de France, daughter of Charles Ferdinand de Bourbon de France, duc de Berry and comte d`Artois. This fact probably explains the erroneous name plate to the frame, naming the subject as "comte d`Artois" See illustration

A rare jug commemorating the burning of York Minster in 1829: printed in blue with the Minster in Flames to one side, entitled "York Minster on fire Feb 2nd 1829" verso, a blue printed portrait of Jonathan Martin, entitled "J*ATHAN **RTIN INCEDIARY" and printed "Tried March 31st 1829 before Mr Baron Hullock and sentenced to Confinement during his Majesty`s Pleasure", surrounded by shackles, all beneath a gothic style printed border, 5 1/2in. (14cms) high (restored chip under spout). NB Jonathan Martin, was born at Haydon Bridge in 1783 and was the older brother of John Martin the well known historical painter. Although found guilty by the jury, he was sent to the infamous Bedlam Hospital by the Judge where he died in 1838.

Engraved title, 5 double-page plates by Jacques Callot after the designs of Giulio Parigi (2 repaired tears on plate 2, slight abrasion on F1 affecting a few letters, some occasional pale spotting.) 18th-century vellum, morocco lettering-piece (front hinge cracked, lettering-piece chipped). Provenance: Wilmot Vaughan, first Earl of Lisburne, Ireland (1730-1800, bookplate). FIRST EDITION, second state of the title. Bonarelli's great tragedy was performed in Florence in 1618. Jacques Callot illustrated the work, following the designs of his tutor and colleague, Giulio Parigi, an architect and the chief designer of courtly festivities under the Grand Duke, Cosimo II de' Medici. Both Parigi and Callot were employed by the Medicis, and under their patronage Callot made his many improvements in etching. This is one of the last books he produced for the Medicis, since he returned to his native Nancy following the death of Cosimo II in 1621. "The dramatic finale shows the city of the tyrant Soliman in flames, The moveable scenes -- THE FIRST IN THE HISTORY OF THE THEATRE -- picture contemporary Florence. Friederich III of Holstein-Gottorp died in 1659 and this lavishly illustrated volume describes the funeral procession from Husum to Gottorp (part I) from Gottorp to Schleswig (part II) and through Schleswig from the Town Square to the cathedrale (part III). The author mathematician, geographer and librarian Adam Olearius is best remembered for his travel account to Persia: The voyages and travels of the ambassadors from the Duke of Holstein, to the Great Duke of Muscovy, and the King of Persia published in the English translation in 1662. Contemporary vellum over pasteboard, later morocco lettering-piece (some minor soiling). A FINE COPY of this entry of Marie de Medici into the cities of Mons, Brussels and Antwerp. The title designed by Nicolas can der Horst shows the strong influence of Rubens. The following plate shows a medallion portrait of Marie de' Medici suspended from a tree which illustrates her descent from royalty. The three fine plates illustrate the Queen's entry into Mons and Brussels, and the arrival of the royal party in the harbor of Antwerp. The Queen, accompanied by the Archduchess Isabella, asked to see the venerable printing press of Plantin at Antwerp. Balthasar Moretus, grandson of Christopher Plantin and then operator of the press, had prepared a booklet of four pages commemorating the visit. The series of 5 fine large folding plates detail the elaborate structures and decorations created for the event: the catafalque with the body, the Piazza Castello with the funeral procession showing the old facade of Palazzo Madama, view of the cathedral entrance, and two wonderful views of the high altar of the cathedral decorated with skeletons. His work collects and reprints 'treatises on medicine and surgery, [which] are valuable as works of reference to books which either are now difficult to obtain or which have disappeared' (Ferguson p.71). There appear to be two issues of the work, distinguished by the use of either 'Genevae' (as here) or 'Coloniae Allobrogum' in the imprint.
