For example, on p.48 (commenting on the printed passage 'Not until the anxious summer of 1938 ... had the possibility of sending two of its five divisions to the Continent in the event of a German war been considered'), Eden writes: "I raised [the] matter several times while still in Govt."; on p.53 (commenting on the printed passage 'Those at home were thinking in terms, not of the swift mechanised and air warfare of the mid-twentieth century, but of the huge troglodyte armies and continuous trench-lines of twenty years before): "Were they? I was clamouring [?in] cabinet for armour"; on p.78 (commenting on Giffard Le Quesne Martel, Commander of the 50th Northumbria Division): "Very much a Winston man. Winston was always pushing him"; on p.83 (commenting on the printed passage 'Despite repeated requests for it Britain's only armoured division was still at home awaiting its long-promised equipment'): "I used to ask about it at Cabinet after Cabinet. Minutes may show this. Winston would remember; he recalled the matter to me"; on p.169 (commenting on the 'Inter-Allied plan to hold Brittany'): "De Gaulle advocated this plan. I had never understood [sic] it was approved. [Maxime] Weygand & [Alphonse Joseph] Georges were there"; on p.192 (on the formation of 'The Home Guard'): "In fact W. [Winston] had nothing whatever to do with raising of Home Guard. The plans had been made before I reached [the] W.O. I decided to make the broadcast myself & did so. W. did not [illegible word] with this matter at all until later & then [illegible word] about the name"; on p.308 (on Admiral Dudley Pound): "Splendid old boy. W. went wrong when he did not heed him - e.g. [illegible word]"; and with heavy annotation to rear endpapers, some possibly in preparation for a speech ("Tell the story of the mistaken message for invasion of Britain ...") ; and with an autograph note loosely-inserted, with one partly indecipherable note written (unusually) in ink: "Resignation speech care about Spain & not affording [?]cover to double crossing." [sic]. With the same author's Triumph in the West 1943-1946. ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT.SPEARS, Edward Louis, 1st Baronet (1886-1974).  Prelude to Victory ... With an Introduction by The Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill. London: Jonathan Cape, January 1940. Large 8vo (222 x 146mm). Half title, half tone portrait frontispiece of the author, 30 half tone plates, 5 folding maps, other maps in the text. Original mauve buckram, spine lettered in gilt, uncut (spine a little faded, light stain to upper cover and spine, some very light scratching to lower cover, without a dust-jacket). FIRST EDITION, second impression, of this account of the last two years of the First World War. ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT, often in scathing terms of the British wartime leadership in general and of General Hubert Gough in particular. For example, on p.40 (commenting on the printed passage 'Another point in General Nivelle's favour was that Mr Lloyd George liked the shape of his head. He was a great believer in his own powers as a phrenologist'), Eden writes: "He liked Nivelle's but not Neville's 'pin-head'"; on p.73 (commenting on the printed passage 'The personnel of the G.Q.C. changed more often than ours, for their large body of staff officers enabled them to enforce a rule that brooked no exception, whereby each staff officer before being promoted to a higher grade must serve six months with the fighting troops'): "A very good rule. We should have had it"; on p.604 (commenting on the passage 'General Gough ... allowed himself to stake far too heavily upon what the tanks might accomplish'): "Gough was always doing this. His men had to pay"; on p.605: "Haig was always backing Gough - that was why 1917 was such a mess ..."; on p.610 (commenting on the passage 'The 4th Division lost over 3000 officers and men'): "Yet Gough was not sacked!"; and on the same page: "It was not the fault of the tanks but of Cavalry Generals, who, like Spears, had never spent 24 hours in a trench." ATTLEE, Clement (1883-1967). As It Happened, London, 1954, 8vo, illustrations, original cloth. Reprint. ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT.ATTLEE, Clement Richard (1883-1967).  As It Happened. London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1954, 8vo (215 x 140mm). Half title, half tone frontispiece portrait of the author, half tone illustrations. Original scarlet cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine faded, without the dust-jacket). Provenance: Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (modern armorial bookplate loosely-inserted). "First published 1954. Reprinted 1954" (from verso of title). ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT. For example, on p.90 (commenting on Attlee's speech to the Geneva Institute of International Relations in 1934), Eden writes: "Playing party politics while an official, as no doubt in [the remainder illegible] ..."; on p.96 (commenting on the printed passage 'following the First World War when it had been laid down that there was no danger of war for ten years'): "Winston's ten year rule"; on p.105 (commenting on Attlee's recuperation in North Wales when Germany invaded Poland): "I had forgotten he was away"; on p.165 (commenting on opposition to the nationalisation of the iron and steel industries): "He [i.e. Attlee] always attributes the lowest motivation to his opponents & assumes the highest in himself"; on p.170 (commenting on Marshall Aid): "& I who suggested it to Ernie [Bevin] in his room in the House"; and on p.172 (commenting on Attlee's claim that Western Europe 'is today a collection of disunited elements lying between two great continental Powers'): "Much stronger than that." In 1955, Attlee contested the general election against Anthony Eden who was seeking a mandate as the new leader of the Conservative Party following Churchill's retirement in April of the same year. It resulted in a victory for the Conservatives who achieved the largest party share of the vote at a post-war election: a triumphant vindication for Eden. Attlee, having led the Labour Party for an unparalleled twenty years and widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest 20th-century Prime Ministers, retired as Leader of the Labour Party to enter the House of Lords as Earl Attlee and Viscount Prestwood. He was succeeded by Hugh Gaitskell.A note on the illustrations in the Anthony & Clarissa Eden section of this catalogue (lots 1-89). Anthony Eden, like any true bibliophile, annotated his books almost entirely in pencil. Consequently, they can be a little difficult to read in the illustrations. They are generally much clearer to read in the books themselves and many of the more significant are recorded verbatim in the descriptions.

For example, on p.9 he highlights the following printed passage from Campbell-Johnson's Preface: 'In a most illuminating appreciation of Eden written for the Strand Magazine early in 1939, Winston Churchill - himself politically isolated - wrote, "He [i.e. Eden] is the only representative of the mutilated generation who has achieved a first-class political position and has held high and dominant office with significance and distinction ...'; on p.89 (commenting on the printed passage 'On 21st February [1934] a diplomatic barrier was broken down when Hitler took lunch at the British Embassy [in Berlin] for the first time. Neurath, Hess, and Goebbels were there as well ... It was during this lunch that Corporal Hitler and Captain Eden exchanged their war memoirs to the extent of working out on the back of a menu the location of their sectors on the Somme. They discovered they were opposite each other'), Eden writes: "Menu card - look for it"; at the foot of the same page: "I was attacked in [the] 'Observer' by Garvin for exceeding my [?]instruction. Eden had decided to leave Rome a day earlier than he had originally arranged'): "because London insisted"; on p.102 (commenting on the printed passage '... at the Moscow Grand Opera ... the Lord Privy Seal of Great Britain was applauded long and warmly by an entirely proletarian audience which clapped enthusiastically as God Save the King was played. Then followed the Internationale'), Eden writes: "George V not at all pleased."

GRIFFITH, Elizabeth ([?]1727-93). The Morality of Shakespeare's Drama Illustrated, London, 1775, 8vo, engraved portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare, contemporary calf (worn). FIRST EDITION. With another related work in 2 vols. (3)GRIFFITH, Elizabeth ([?]1727-93).  The Morality of Shakespeare's Drama Illustrated. London: Printed for T. Cadell, 1775. 8vo (214 x 125mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare, woodcut typographical ornament on title, printed dedication to David Garrick, one-page of errata on the verso of the last page of the preface (portrait almost detached, some very light spotting and staining). Contemporary calf, spine gilt (worn, head of spine torn, some erosion to foot of spine, lacking lettering-piece, rubbed). Provenance: Robert Prescott Esq. (old armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION of this pioneering work of Shakespearean criticism - in part a rebuttal of Voltaire's "single discordant voice" (see the author's Preface) - and, arguably, the first to establish Shakespeare's status as "National Poet." Of particular interest are the author's comments on "King Lear", comparing Shakespeare's original tragedy and Nahum Tate's (now infamous) re-working of it in 1681 which remained the preferred version among audiences and critics even into the first half of the 19th-century. Griffith's printed introduction to the play, on p.351 (preserving her original eccentric punctuation), states: "It may be necessary to many Readers to premise, that the Piece here under consideration, is the Play as originally written by Shakespeare, lest the bearing it in mind as altered by Tate, and generally acted so, might occasion confusion or mistakes, in the following notes and observations. The Critics are divided in their opinions between the original and the altered copy. Some prefer the first, as a more general representation of human life, where fraud too often succeeds, and innocence suffers: others prefer the latter, as a more general description of what life should be ... However, if pity and terror, as the Critics say, are the principal objects of Tragedy, surely no Play that ever was written can possibly answer both these ends better than this [i.e. the original] performance, as it stands in the present text." The author's stance may have been influential in eventually restoring Shakespeare's original play to the stage and to print. RARE. With [Charlotte Lennox's] Shakespear Illustrated: or the Novels and Histories On which the Plays of Shakespear Are Founded, Collected and Translated from the Original Authors. With Critical Remarks. In Two Volumes. By the Author of the Female Quixote (London, 1753, 2 vols., 12mo, contemporary calf, worn, upper cover of vol. one detached. A supplementary third volume, not present here and not called for on the title page of vol. one (where it states "In Two Volumes"), appeared in 1755). (3)

Dear Mr Eden, I hope you or your charming wife will get a chance to read the book. The author was the Norwegian Foreign Minister during the Norwegian Government's exile in London from 1940-45 and, from 1946 to 1952, the first Secretary-General of the United Nations. On p.11 of the book, the author describes (in print) his relationship with Anthony Eden and the high esteem in which he held him: "During the war I had formed a warm friendship with Anthony Eden. I had known and admired his courageous stand against the prevailing mood of his own Conservative party in the later 1920's, his opposition to appeasement and effort to revitalize the League of Nations and make it a real force for collective security against aggression before it was too late ... Now he was out of office as Foreign Secretary, and I regarded him as an ideal choice for Secretary-General [i.e. of the United Nations]. I am not sure that he would have accepted, but he did not object when I told him I should like to sound out the Labor[sic] Government and Moscow."
