Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Hardy. Some very slight, minor foxing, otherwise VG. Hardy`s father had died nine days earlier, on 20th July 1892. The artist William Strang (1859-1921) drew Hardy as Max Gate shortly after this letter was written. Leoncavallo` Dated in the composer`s hand Marienbad, 17th July 1894. To a light area of the background at the right of the image Leoncavallo has boldly penned a musical quotation of two bars which he identifies as being from Bajazzo (the German name of Pagliacci, the quotation being for cello from Pagliacci`s aria Vesta la Giubba, sung by Canio at the close of the first act). A fine signed portrait, enhanced with a musical quotation from the composer`s most famous opera, and with an interesting association. Very slightly, neatly trimmed to the edges, just affecting the photographer`s mount and not the image or signature, otherwise VG Heinrich Grunfeld (1855-1931) Bohemian-Austrian Violoncellist, appointed court violoncellist to King William of Prussia in 1866.
