ATTRIBUTED TO SIR PETER LELY (1618-1680) "Young Lady in Red Dress", a portrait study, half length, oil on canvas, oval, unsigned, image size 75 cm x 62 cm CONDITION REPORTS Frame requires attention in several areas with splitting and scuffing to the gesso in several areas. The work itself has been re-lined though there is no sign of repair or repainting under UV. The paintwork has crazing particularly to the forehead and some areas of the breast area. There is slight paint loss to the dress to the left hand side of the breast showing pink in the image. There is a small light surface scratch to the left of her head and light scuffing to the edge of the work where the frame meets the canvas. Otherwise the work is basically sound. Not known if the frame is "Lely" frame. The piece was given a full attribution to LELY by Sotheby's in a Probate Valuation of the 1970's and valued accordingly. It was given a slightly more cautious valuation by the current auctioneers and valued accordingly. The number 158 appears to have been stuck on a label to the frame, significance of which we assume is a catalogue/collection number of previous owners. It has not been inserted into the frame. Re. Provenance: a good local private source from whence came several of the best pieces in this sale
