Worlidge.Select Coll.D`ngs..Antique Gems first edition engraved portrait and 186 fine engravings (mostly 2 to a page) all printed on satin and mounted on thick paper without letterpress as issued the last two untitled old book-label of Comte Chandon de Briailles on front free endpaper (dated by hand 1940) finely bound in early nineteenth century olive green straight-grain morocco gilt covers with Greek key border small corner stars and rules forming panel spines with five double raised bands with red gilt morocco inlays compartments with antique head surrounded by starbursts purple silk doublures and endpapers inner gilt dentelles with pineapple cornerpieces g.e. a little rubbed light spotting [Sinkankas 7331] large 4to [1768]. ***”Worlidge`s last work was a series of 182 etchings of gems from the antique (three are in duplicate). The series was published in parts some of which seem to have been issued as early as 1754; but Worlidge died before the work was completed. It was finished by his pupils William Grimaldi and George Powle and being printed on satin was published by his widow in 1768 at the price of eighteen guineas a copy ... No letterpress was included originally in the volume.” DNB. The bibliography of this elaborate work does not seem to have been fully settled: Sinkankas notes the “enormous confusion that surrounds this publication ... casting doubt that few bibliographic descriptions ... can be relied upon” (p.1143). This is an especially luxurious copy and appears to have more than the usual “183” plates called for (Sinkankas). Each of the delicate engravings printed on pale gold satin is titled and bears a caption denoting the contemporary owner of the gem depicted. It includes the untitled plate of Hercules slaying the Nemean lion which like all the other plates in this volume is not numbered. The frontispiece self-portrait of 1754 depicts Worlidge (1700-1766) in the style of Rembrandt wearing a cap drawing the Pomfret bust of Cicero. .

An interesting collection of ephemera relating to 2/Lt Douglas St George Pettigrew. Pettigrew enlisted in the Public Schools brigade at the beginning of WWI and was gazetted to the Sherwood Foresters in 1916. Severely wounded at Thiepval, 7th October 1916, he made a complete recovery and returned to the front where he was mortally wounded whilst leading his men, 22nd October 1917, he died the next day. His first Commanding Officer wrote `he was one of those sure to be hit, the best always are`. He died aged 25 just a few days before he expected to be transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. The collection includes his death plaque, telegrams, photographs, books and newspaper cuttings. The lot includes an interesting group of letters from the trenches including his last letter, particularly poignant as it arrived with his mother on 27th October 1917, four days after his death. 17th Sherwood Foresters B.E.F No Date Mother dear, You asked me in your letter of 2 Oct 1917 to write a few lines that should go to you in the event of my being killed. Well, I can only say, that when I go into the trenches I have no fear at all as regards the ultimate end, neither do I at all fear Death, as such: I have only the natural shrinking from physical pain (more at some times than at others) which, as far as I can see, cannot be absent from a reasoning being under these conditions; but I pray that it may never deter me from my duty, or gain the mastery over me. Death I look on as Unknown but not Unfriendly: for life here is bound by so much, whereas Death is really Life Eternal; unbounded limitless and grand. That I may never, in any way, prove unworthy of you my mother, is also my wish. Yr son, D. see lot 97 for a portrait of Douglas St George Pettigrew, see illustration
