* JOHN DANIEL REVEL ROI RP (SCOTTISH 1884 - 1967), THE GIRL WITH AN ORANGEoil on canvas, signed 51cm x 42cm (20 x 16.5 inches)Framed. Provenance: Private Edinburgh collection.Note: John D Revel was born in Dundee in 1884. He studied at Dundee School of Art, becoming an Art Pupil Teacher. After qualifying as a teacher he taught for two years in Shipley, Yorkshire before becoming the Principal Teacher of architecture in Preston, Lancashire. In 1906 he gained an open Scholarship to the RCA and in 1911 left the College with a degree in architecture, a degree in painting and the award of a Travelling Scholarship for painting. After a year abroad he was offered and took up the post of Headmaster at Chelsea School of Art. He also saw service in the First World War in Mesopotamia and India, becoming an official artist to the Expeditionary Force (water-colour paintings survive from this time). He specialised in portraiture and landscape. Revel was elected a member of the International Society of Painters, the Royal Portrait Society and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. In 1925 he took up the post of Director at Glasgow School of Art. Under his directorship the Extension Building (now the Assembly Hall) was built and the School saw an upsurge in student and social events, notably the development of the Student Representative Council, the growth of the Glasgow School of Art Dramatic Club and the birth of the Kinecraft Society. Revel kept up the tradition of teacher/headmaster/director by occasionally taking the architect's drawing class. The degree course in Architecture produced its first graduates during his time as director, quite a few of whom were women. The artist has works in the collections of Glasgow and Dundee museums. Only three of Revel's paintings are recorded in UK auction records (Artnet) with a recent one ''New Orleans Boy'', a 50 x 40cm oil on canvas, which was sold by McTear's for £1800 (hammer) as lot 1486 29th November 2012.
* ROBERT HENDERSON BLYTH RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1919 - 1970), WINTER IN EDINBURGHoil on board, signed36cm x 47cmFramedLabel verso: James Bourlet & Sons Ltd, Fine Art Framers, London. C5061.Note: Blyth was born in the Newlands area of Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1934 to 1939. Blyth joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1941 and served with them until the end of the Second World War. During the war Blyth continued to paint and sketch, whilst on active service in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Four paintings from this period were acquired by the War Artists' Advisory Committee. Towards the end of the conflict Blyth's unit, 157 Ambulance, was based in Hamburg much of which had been devastated by RAF bombing raids in 1943. Blyth used the background of a destroyed city in his most famous painting, In the Image of Man. Painted after the war ended the painting's title parodies the Judeo-Christian concept of man made in the image of God and shows a city in ruins behind a bomb damaged crucifix. In 1945 Blyth won the Guthrie Award from the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1946 he painted Existence Precarious, a self-portrait as a soldier in a trench, which is now in the National Gallery of Scotland. Also in 1946 he began teaching at the Edinburgh School of Art and became an artist in residence at Hospitalfield House. In 1954 he moved to Aberdeen to take a post at Gray's School of Art, where he became head of drawing in 1960, a post he maintained until his death in 1970. The Scottish Arts Council organised a memorial exhibition to Blyth which toured Scotland during 1972. Thirty-five examples of Blyth's works are held in numerous public collections including The Scottish National Gallery, Glasgow Museums, The UK Government Art Collection, The Hunterian and The Imperial War Museum.
