English School (17th Century) Portrait of a Lady, wearing a White Ruff, Lace, Pearls and a Diamond Ring inscribed upper right Ao 1601 Stilo Veteri D 11.7 Bris. Adamo Aet 23 oil on panel 74 x 52cm Provenance: Private collection, Cambridgeshire, since the late 19th Century The inscription translates: Anno 1601 old style on the 11 day of September, my truly beloved aged 23. The painting may well be a wedding portrait - the sitter displays a diamond ring and pearls, signifying purity and innocence. English Protestants, along with Protestants throughout Europe, flatly refused to adopt the new Gregorian calendar introduced in 1582. It would still have been a sensitive issue in 1601, particularly to someone who wanted to emphasise an unequivocal confessional identity. The inscription is all early modern Latin rather than Italian and the sitter is almost certainly English or Dutch, certainly Protestant (hence the use of old style as new style was Catholic; and old style is highly unlikely to be found anywhere in Italy around 1600)
English School (17th Century) Portrait of Master Aylmer ffolliott, eldest son of Sir John ffolliott of Pirton, aged 15, wearing a Gold and Coral Earring, and holding a Red Prayer Book signed upper right "A 1603" and upper left "AE.015" oil on bevelled oak panel 45 x 38cm Portrait of Master John ffolliott, fifth son of Sir John ffolliott of Pirton, holding a Golden Apple inscribed upper right "A 1603" and upper left "A ?13" oil on bevelled oak panel 43 x 32cm Portrait of Master Francis ffolliott, third son of Sir John ffolliot of Pirton (born 21 March 1595) aged 8, holding a Prayer Book tied with Red Ribbons inscribed upper right "A 1603" and upper left "Ef.8" oil on bevelled oak panel 45 x 34cm Portrait of Master Henry ffolliott, sixth son of Sir John ffolliott of Pirton, aged 2, holding a Coral and Silver Rattle inscribed upper right "A 1603" and upper left "Ae 2" oil on bevelled oak panel 42 x 32cm (4) Provenance: Private collection, Suffolk The present paintings portray the four sons of Sir John ffolliott of Pirton Court, Moreton ffolliott, Worcestershire. Sir John ffolliott was knighted in 1603 and the portraits of his sons were most likely painted to commemorate this. Sir John ffolliott inherited the English lands of the family and he was the eldest son of Thomas ffolliott and Katherine Lygon of Madresfield. Sadly the ffolliott family did not retain Pirton Court for much longer - in 1623 the estate was sold and passed to Sir William Courteen. The oys all display various attributes which would have been easily recognisable to the viewer in the early 17th century Ð the eldest, Aylmer, wears a coral earring to protect him from harm; John holds either a quince or a golden apple - symbol of learning; Aylmer and Francis both hold prayer books to show their faith and fidelity. The youngest, Henry, aged 2, is wearing long sleeves which would have acted as leading reins Ð children were breeched generally between the ages of four and seven when the child would be taken out of his gown and stays and given his first pair of breeches (adult clothing). Sometimes a party would be given to celebrate the end of childhood. Aylmer, the eldest son and heir to Sir John ffolliott, married Barbara Devereux (nee Smalbroke) of Blakesley Hall, Yardley, Worcestershire, on 23 December 1620, at the Church of St Mildred Poultry and St Mary Colechurch, London. They had ten children. John ffolliott died young; Francis ffolliott entered the Church and went on to become Vicar of Berk well in Warwickshire; Henry ffolliott was killed on the Calais voyage.
