Gray sought to encourage the king's supporters in Scotland, but there is no evidence of his taking any part in the marquess of Montrose's campaign in 1644–5. None the less, after Montrose was defeated at Philiphaugh in September 1645 Gray was taken prisoner and, on the advice of Lieutenant-General David Leslie, the committee of estates on 30 October ordered that he be banished from Britain, under threat of being put to death if he returned during the 'troubles'. Clearly it was suspected that he was deep in royalist plots, and this is confirmed by a French diplomat's comment in August 1647 that Gray 'has been detained in Scotland for some years in the service of the King of Great Britain' (Fotheringham, 2.218).' Gray's banishment was not enforced, however, perhaps because the covenanters wished to avoid offending the French, for whom he continued to seek troops. The church, in June and December 1646, expressed its 'great offence' at his continued presence, but the report that he was excommunicated in 1649 is unconfirmed. At the request of the exiled Charles II, Gray resigned his lieutenancy of the Scots gens d'armes at some point in the 1650s. He returned to Scotland after the restoration of monarchy in 1660 and died in 1663. 2) ESTC R204182; Wing C2046.

Each framed and glazed, 26 x 30 cm.Lt Edward Cotgrave Parr Willoughby 1834-1858 came from a Military family, his father was a Maj-General (see lots xxx and yyy), his brother a Lt General and for a time Military Secretary to the Bombay Government, he was one of the nine men who blew up the Delhi magazine on the 11th May 1857. Edward fought in the Crimean War, The Persian War 1856/57 and the Indian Mutiny. The report of his life in the Illustrated London News for 17th July 1858 was full of praise for the young Officer. '...career, though short, was brilliant, joined the Bombay army as a cadet of infantry in 1855, ... He was present at the second relief of Lucknow, where in the desperate attack of the Secunderbagh, he greatly distinguished himself, and brought his regiment out of action, and was honourably mentioned in the Commander-in-Chief and Governor General's despatches. At the battle of Cawnport, and at the siege and capture of Lucknow, he also behaved with daring gallantry. His commanding Officer and second in command being severely wounded in a street fight with the enemy, he was nominated to the temporary command of the Corps. On the movement of the troops from Lucknow his regiment (of which he was second in command) was attached to the column under General Walpole proceeding Northwards towards Bareilly ... On the 15th of April last the force approached the fort of Roodamow; and hearing that it was to be attacked, Lieutenant Willoughby left his dhooly and mounted his horse, and whilst gallantly leading his men to the assault was mortally wounded in the throat, but still bravely persisted in going forward till he sank from loss of blood, and died on the glacis. In the recovery of his body Captain Cope, his commanding officer, was severely wounded, and some of his men killed.'Other reports describe the Fort as Ruiya the jungle fort Nirpat Singh ' a petty land owner who seemed rebellious as long as rebellion was profitable the attack was a misjudgment as it was much stronger and more heavily defended than had been expected, the assailants being driven back with heavy loss including Willoughby. Kaye's and Mallinson are more damning of the attack on the Fort: 'He (General Walpole) did not, take the trouble to reconnoiter. The slightest examination would have shown him that, whilst the northern and eastern faces were strong ... the western and southern were weak ... he sent his men in a blundering hap-hazard manner against its strongest face! ... Presently, Captain Cafe came down with his Sikhs, the 4th Punjab Rifles. Without communicating with Grove, Cafe dashed into the ditch ...There his men, having no ladders, were shot down like dogs. It was marvelous that any escaped. Amongst the officers killed was Edward Willoughby a young officer of the 10th Bombay Native Infantry.' Cafe was eager to recover Willoughby's body and he and two Privates, Thomson and Spence, from the 42nd returned to the field of fire. Cafe was injured as was Spence who died two days later of his wounds. Thomson and Cafe received the ultimate bravery award for this acting of selfless bravery, the Victoria Cross.William Martin Cafe (1826-1906), later General. Victoria Cross awarded for 'Bearing away, under a heavy fire, with the assistance of Privates Thompson, Crowie, Spence and Cook, the body of Lieutenant Willoughby, lying near the ditch of the Fort of Ruhya, and for running to the rescue of Private Spence, who had been severely wounded in the attempt'. This award is in the collection of the National Army Museum in Chelsea. Alexander Thompson (c.1824-1880). Victoria Cross awarded for 'Daring gallantry, on the 15th April, 1858, when at the attack of the Fort of Ruhya, in having volunteered to assist Captain Groves, Commanding the 4th Punjab Rifles, in bringing in the body of Lieutenant Willoughby, of that Corps, from the top of the Glacis, in a most exposed situation, under a heavy fire'. This award is in the Black Watch Museum in Perth, Scotland.Edward Spence (1831-1858), 'He and Lance-Corporal Thompson, of that regiment, volunteered, at the attack of the Fort of Ruhya, on the 10th April, 1858, to assist Captain Cafe, commanding the 4th Punjab Rifles, in bringing in the body of Lieutenant Willoughby from the top of the Glacis. Private Spence dauntlessly placed himself in an exposed position so as to cover the party bearing away the body. He died on the 17th of the same month from the effects of the wound which he received on the occasion.' This award is in the Black Watch Museum in Perth, Scotland.Provenance believed to be with the family of Willoughby until recently entering a private collection. It is unclear who the artist of these works is, perhaps his widow or one of his children who will no doubt have been proud of the stories of such bravery and service. See lots 161 and 162 for the portrait and sword of Major general Willoughby. *CR Some fading and light browning to the paper.

The latter's portraits were sold at Bonhams, London, on 3 November 2015 (lot 50), and depict the present sitters' mother, Margaret Elizabeth, wearing a white dress and coral necklace, matching that of her daughters.

Ivory submission reference: FQC6GVC6. Note:  The present portrait appears to be inspired by Lefèvre's iconic portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, a version of which is in the collection at Apsley House. In addition to being well-known through several versions in oil, Lefèvre's portraits of the Emperor were widely circulated through prints and appears to have provided inspiration for many miniaturists working at the time, including Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855) and Jean-Baptiste Augustin (1759-1832).

Los 168

Circle of Hermann Winterhalter,  German 1808-1891- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, with a black ribbon adorned with gold in her hair; oil on board, oval, bears label for 'C. DAVY / COLOURMAN TO ARTISTS / 83 NEWMAN STREET, LONDON' verso, 24.7 x 20 cm. Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson. Note:  Winterhalter's portraits frequently evoke a sense of dreaminess which is, nevertheless, slightly more restrained and somewhat less fanciful than those of his brother, the portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873). The sitter's stance in the present work, with a slightly turned head and slightly exposed shoulder, are also typical of Hermann Winterhalter's compositions, imparting the work with a hint of sensuality.

Although he identified mainly as a painter of animal subjects his portraits were in high demand among his patrons. These ranged from depictions of family members and aristocrats, to charming images of children with their pets and pastimes, with the present work somewhat recalling a portrait study by Landseer of Catherine Seyton which sold at Christie's, London, on 25 May 2022 (lot 72).

Los 326

Paul Adolphe Rajon,  French 1842/43-1888- Portrait of a guardsman in 16th-century costume, holding a pike; oil on canvas, signed 'P. Rajon' and indistinctly inscribed (upper right), 65 x 53.8 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Rajon was undoubtedly particularly well-known as a printmaker, producing numerous etched portraits of fellow artists such as James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914). Nevertheless, he also worked as a painter, training under Auguste Migette (1802-1884) between 1859-1860 in Metz, before travelling to Paris, where he studied under Isidore Pils (1815-1875), among others, at the École des Beaux-Arts. Rajon clearly had some interest in the depiction of historical military costume, as suggested by his etching of the figure of 'Pulchinello' after Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891).

The composition is a typically sensual portrait of a languid female figure, gazing away from the viewer and seemingly lost in thought.

Los 88

The present composition somewhat recalls Kettle's 'Portrait of a lady holding flowers' which sold at Sworders on 15 September 2021 (lot 548).
