AN ABBEYDALE CHURCHILL VASE AND COVER of octagonal pagoda form with lion handles and cobalt panelled ground, decorated with sepia portrait and raised gilt emblems and inscriptions, 28cm h, gilt printed mark and that of the retailer, T Goode & Co Ltd, London, and numbered 229 of an edition of 250, c1965 ++In fine condition
MARGARET KING (FL 1779-1787) PORTRAIT OF A LADY head and shoulders, in a frilled bonnet with ribbon and black dress with white collar and black lace, signed and dated 1780, signed and inscribed No 16 Percy Street - Place on a label attached to the later backboard, pastel, oval, 70 x 49cm ++Slightly reduced and with minor, mainly peripheral restoration when reframed some years ago, but in good overall condition in period giltwood and composition beaded cavetto frame
PETER PEREZ BURDETT (c1743-1793) FULL STREET DERBY with date and inscriptions recto and verso in several hands, pen, ink and wash on laid paper watermarked J Whatman, 31.5 x 44.5cm (unframed) This unique 18th century view of Full Street in Derby is an exciting rediscovery of a rare drawing by the important cartographer, surveyor and topographical artist P P Burdett. In 1765 Burdett moved into the tall house on the left hand side of the street (next but one to the alms houses) which he had his friend, the architect Joseph Pickford (1734-1782) remodel in the fashionable Gothick style. A friend of Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797), who painted a double portrait of Burdett and his wife his circle included many of the leading figures in the Midlands Enlightenment. Amongst others, he corresponded with such luminaries as Benjamin Franklin. His many interests ranged from astronomy and music to printmaking, producing the first aquatint printed in England. The present, apparently unfinished drawing, with the east end of Derby Cathedral on the extreme right hand side being all that now remains of the scene, was copied by George Bailey (1832-1925) and published as a postcard by Richard Keene, Junior of Derby in 1905. In 1768 Burdett left Derby for Liverpool so as to avoid his creditors, before settling permanently in the Margraviate of Baden in 1774. ++Much surface dust, numerous creases and marginal loss/tears with old marginal strenghtening verso. Entirely unrestored. Not over faded and would clean satisfactorily.
EDMUND HAVELL, JUNIOR (1819-1894) EQUESTRIAN PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN IN A DEER PARK 41 x 51.5cm ++The support lined and with some evidence of overpainting, localised instability of the medium resulting in localised flaking, in contemporary early 19th c giltwood and composition beaded cavetto frame
FOLLOWER OF THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH PORTRAIT OF JOHN VINCENT GANDOLFI, 11TH MARCHESE DI MELATI, 7TH CONTE DI GAZZELLI AND CHIOSANICA (1737-1815) half length in a green coat with gold lace, charged upper right with a shield of arms and with inscription upper left, in a feigned oval, 76 x 63cm, unframed ++The support lined in probably the early 20th c with some retouched areas of bituminisation and paint shrinkage principally in the lower third of the composition
ENGLISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A THREE MASTED BARQUE 45.5 x 70cm, maple frame ++Three repaired holes, the support unlined, hanging loosely on the original stretchers and in what could well be the original maple frame. Some localised retouching where paint shrinkage is evident and ingrained dirt
AFTER HENRI GASCAR PORTRAIT OF LOUISE DE KÉROUALLE, DUCHESS OF PORTSMOUTH (1649-1734) with a King Charles Spaniel, half length before drapery, 92 x 73cm, in a carved giltwood frame Despite the artist having painted the sitter fair haired, the present picture is unmistakably a portrait of Charles II`s fRENCH mistress. It is based on a mezzotint probably by and certainly after Henri Gascar. The intimate setting, rich drapery and her opulent dress would indicate that the Duchess is depicted in her private apartments at Whitehall and is wearing the type of "loose gown" as her dress was described by John Evelyn. See the Catalogue of the NPG Exhibition, Painted Ladies Women at the Court of Charles II by C Macleod (et al) 2001, No 52. Provenance: anon sale, Knight, Frank & Rutley, London (as "Lady of the Court of Charles II by Sir Peter Lely") 28 March 1956. ++In ready to hang condition, lined but not in recent years and restored with some overpainting, subsequent patched repair lower centre,(sitter`s right index finger and dog`s forelegs) the pigments in particular the red, the embroidery and lace etc rich and decorative. In good quality 19th c carved giltwood frame in the style of the period with small losses, not recently regilt
ENGLISH SCHOOL, C1802 A DRUMMER BOY three quarter length in a wooded landscape, signed SL and inscribed PEACE Octbr 1 1801(on the drum), panel, oval, 26.5 x 21.5cm The date is that of the signing of the Treaty of London preliminary to the peace of Amiens, the treaty that ended hostilities between France and the United Kingdom. It lasted only until May 1803, when the British declared war on France, a terminus ante quem for the present charming naive portrait.
ENGLISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A BRITISH MERCHANT BARQUE OFF WHITBY 54 x 75.5cm ++Several inexpertly repaired patched tears, some localised paint loss lower centre, general paint shrinkage/craqueleur overall and small crudely retouched area (on the jib), unevenly revarnished. An interesting slightly naive work, the appearance of which could be greatly improved in the hands of a conservator. The support unlined and on the original stretchers in what is undoubtedly the original Victorian giltwood and composition ornate moulded frame with cable slip. The frame regilt in a cheap bronzing paint
THOMAS HILLIER MEW (FL 1850-1868) PORTRAIT OF A SADDLED GREY HUNTER IN A LOOSE BOX; PORTRAIT OF A DARK BAY HORSE two, one signed and dated 1858, 29 x 39cm (2) ++The first in good original condition with light craqueleur and surface dirt, the dull varnish in need of cleaning, support unlined and undamaged, on the original stretchers, in later ebonised frame with gilt slip. The second with paint loss and restoration including an overpainted hole of approx 2cm x 1cm on the horses flank, unevenly revarnished. The support laid on panel by a contemporary but different hand to the other work in the lot
HERBERT ST JOHN JONES (1872-1939) PORTRAIT OF THE DARK BAY HUNTER "RETREAT" signed, dated 1915 and inscribed, signed again and inscribed Studies From Life verso, artist`s board, 16 x 27cm ++Paint surface slightly abraded extreme left and right where it has been contact with a frame, minor surface dirt, requires a light clean. In modern gilt frame
ENGLISH NAIVE ARTIST, 19TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A WHITE COW WITH A MAN CUTTING SWEDES IN A FARMYARD 58 x 74cm ++The support lined and with some restoration and localised overpainting but an attractive primitive work the presence of Sotheby`s Chester labels on the reverse of the frame suggesting the late owner may well have purchased this at auction in those rooms, in 19th c cavetto frame that has been re-gilt with a bronzing paint
R FILLANS, 1856 PORTRAIT OF A CHILD WITH A KING CHARLES SPANIEL half length before drapery in a feigned oval, signed and dated, 49.5 x 39cm ++The varnish clean, some paint shrinkage and retouching, light overall craqueleur, the support not lined and on he original stretchers, the joints perished and hanging out of true, on the reverse evidence of a small repaired hole extreme upper right, in Victorian style frame, possibly purchased by the late owner at a sale at Sotheby`s Chester in the 1980s
