Kennedy among his list of celebrated clients, operating numerous studios across the USA, including Palm Beach during the winter months.

A PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF A YOUNG LADY (2)Late 18th / Early 19th centuryIn a gold frame with a split pearl border, the reverse with a glazed compartment with a locket of hair, unsigned, 6cm x 5cm, together with a portrait miniature of a gentleman, unsigned, in a black papier-mache frame, the painting approx 5cm x 4cm (2)Condition report:The first would benefit from a careful thorough clean overall, with a few minor small marks to the glass, dirt and dust to the pearl settings, commensurate with age and use. The white specks appear to be flaked painted which seem to be fixed in position under the glass. However, the portrait has not been examined out of the frame. There is likely to be some fading commensurate with age. The surface of the portrait appears flat. The reverse with pin fixed into the hook clip, which appears to be bent fully round now fixed tight. Mild marks and tarnishing to the back, especially around the hinge. The hair is in place.The second: the portrait appears to be painted on ivory, with dirt and dust overall, together with likely fading, commensurate with age and use. The portrait is held in place with copper teeth. Numerous chips, wear and some light warping mostly to the corners of the frame. Tarnishing to the gilt-metal inner frame and foliate hanging mount, which is also loose. A light craquelure to the carton-pierre surface, commensurate with age.

A bit dirty. Nice colour to the gold surround. There is an old stain to the back. Height of mount 43mm. Width of mount 36.9mm. Weight 11gms. The box is not its original box.

Nathaniel Brown (fl.1742-1771)Portrait of the Reverend Mr Simpson of Coventry, half length, in clerical robes, in a library;Portrait of his wife, seated half length, in a brown dress, white lace bonnet and holding rosesa pair, one inscribed 'Nathl. Brown pinxit 1742', the other 'N Brown pinxit 1742', oil on canvas91 x 71cm (2)Condition report: Both paintings are in oil on canvas and are unlined. The edges of the canvas on the portrait of a Gentleman are failing, the canvas has lost tension. There is a large tear at the lower edge with a surrounding deformation. The portrait of a Lady also has smaller tears and punctures to the canvas; one at the top edge has been repaired from the reverse with a canvas patch. The paint layers on both works have areas of raised, flaking paint in the lower sections with scattered losses. The thicker passages of paint flesh have developed networks of age cracks which appear very dark. The varnish layers have degraded, as well as becoming dark and yellowed the varnish is also losing saturation and turning opaque, this is evident in the gentleman’s jacket.
