A late 19th Century satinwood and decorated display cabinet:, on serpentine fronted stand, painted with ribbon tied floral garlands and scrolling foliage, the domed upper part with a moulded cornice and frieze centred by a basket of fruit, the lined interior enclosed by a pair of lozenge glazed panel doors, the stand with an oval cameo portrait of a young lady, having a shaped apron on square tapered legs, united by an oval stretchered platform, 71cm (2ft 4in) wide, 164cm (5ft 4 1/2in) high.
An oval hard-stone cameo portrait brooch: the oval cornelian and white agate layered cameo carved depicting the portrait of a young woman her hair adorned with flowers, possibly a representation of 'Spring' within a plain frame with foliate engraved highlights, the suspension loop stamped '585', 33mm width of frame, 54mm long including suspension loop, 19.8gms gross weight.
The Des Clayes Sisters.Alice Des Clayes [1890-1968].Born in Aberdeen, the younger sister of Berthe and Gertrude. Alice studied at the Bushey Art School at Newlyn and Ambletouse. She left for Canada in 1914, where she exhibited regularly at the Royal Canadian Academy and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Like her sisters she experimented in a variety of mediums; pastels, coloured chalks, oils and watercolour. She returned to England in 1938 and lived at Newton Abbot, Devon.Berthe Des Clayes [1877-1968].Studied at Bushey and the Academie Julian, Paris. She lived in London until 1912 when, like her sisters, moved to Montreal until 1920, then returning to Chorley Wood in England. In 1931 she returned to Montreal, remaining until 1951 when she returned to Devon. She painted landscapes and figures in all mediums.Gertrude Des Clayes [1879-1949].Studied, like Berthe, at Bushy and the Academie Julian. A portrait and genre painter in all mediums, she became a founder member of the National Portrait Society in 1910. She moved to Montreal in 1912, the same year as her sister. She too returned to England in 1936, and lived in London.* Alice des Clayes [1890-1968]-Harvesting on the fringe of Dartmoor:-signed and inscribed on reverse with titlewatercolour38 x 52cm, together with The Plough Team. English School early 19th Century-A miniature portrait of a naval officer, head and shoulders:-with short dark wavy hair and wearing a black neck tie and blue overcoat with brass buttons and epaulets, sky background, oval 6.5cm, on ivory, in a yellow metal frame with mother of pearl glass reverse inset with a lock of hair and seed pearl monogram.
Circle of Gervase Spencer [18th Century]-A miniature portrait of a lady:, bust-length, with straight dark hair held in a band, blue eyes and wearing a lace collar, blue shawl and pale yellow dress, oval 4.7cm, on ivory, together with a small decorative miniature of a fashionable lady in a paste-set and yellow metal frame, and an 18th Century miniature portrait of a gentleman. Samuel Cotes [1734-1818]-A miniature portrait of a gentleman:, head and shoulders wearing a powdered wig, lace jabot and a fashionable blue coatsigned with initials and dated S.C. 1761, oval, 3.6cm, in a paste-set brooch frame, together with one other Samuel Cotes miniature of a lady signed with initials and dated S.C. 1761. Circle of Walter Stephens Lethbridge [1771-1831]-A miniature portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders:,with dark wavy hair and brown eyeswearing a white stock and blue coat, oval, 8cm, on ivory, with milk glass reverse inset with seed pearls and hair [damaged], together with a miniature of a gentleman said to be Abraham Daniel of Exeter, in a chinoiserie red and gilt lacquer frame. Treuenfeld]:-three-quarter length, wearing a diamond set wedding ring, white silk dress with decorative dress hook and wrap, and on her head a coronet of flowerssigned and dated F Winterhalter 1850 Paris centre rightoil on canvasoval, 130 x 100cm,contained within a fine, contemporary wood, plaster and gilded frame, with ribbon and flower surmount, a crown and crest, with other plaster and gilded decorations throughout.* Provenance. Prior to 1914 unknownCirca 1914-1932 thought to be in the Collection of Paul R. Kuenrich, Holly Court, Sheffield.Circa 1930s, Sir Stuart and Lady Goodwin.1960, gifted to Mr & Mrs. F. Eske.Thence by family descent.The frame is surmounted with a Coronet appropriate to a Count of the German Federation and of the Holy Roman and Austrian Empires ensigning the accolle shields of Bethmann [Frankfurt on Main, Bavaria], Barons, 9th August 1842, and Vrints De Treuenfeld [Brussels], created Baron 9th April 1860.Literature. A set of six Chinese famille rose teabowls and saucers and a similar bowl: the teabowls and saucers painted with a riverside fishing scene with three figures, Qianlong, saucers 12 cm diameter [some damage]; the bowl with panels of figures in lake landscapes between pink scale borders, the interior with a portrait of a lady, Qianlong, 14 cm diameter [rim frits and chips].
A large Doulton Lambeth stoneware Boer War commemorative three-handled loving cup or tyg: inscribed 'In Commemoration of the Hoisting of the Flag at Pretoria' above a portrait of Queen Victoria below with crossed flags of the Union Jack and the Royal Standard with inscription 'God Save The Queen', circa 1900, impressed factory mark, incised artist's initials for Rosina Brown and numbered 9962, 26 cm high.
