44 copies of 'Pastime with which is incorporated Football', running from No. 605 Vol. XXIV December 26 1894 to No. 653 Vol. XXVI November 27 1895 Missing 4 copies Nos. 618, 629, 638 and 639, good to very good condition, slight damage to the rear few pages of No. 633 The issues cover, amongst other things, the debate and subsequent schism between Rugby Union and Rugby League, results for football (professional and amateur), rugby, golf, cricket, athletics, hockey and cycling, with further coverage of curling, bob sled, US College Football, and some controversial items such as the enforced closure of both the Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers grounds after attacks on referees and bribery of officials, and a report on an England Scotland international football match. Each issue has a photographic portrait of a well-known sportsman or sportswoman together with a biography of their sporting history. There are also a number of photographs and cartoons including one of the English and Scottish rugby teams. The outer covers contain adverts for sporting equipment, clothing, books and events. A number of these issues originally came from the Royal Gunpowder Factory Library in Waltham Abbey.

* HUGH ADAM CRAWFORD RSA (SCOTTISH 1898 - 1982), PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM ARMOUR oil on canvas, signed with monogram 65cm x 52cm Framed and under glass. Notes: Hugh Adam Crawford was an influential and charismatic figure in the 1920/30s Glasgow art scene. During a long teaching career, Crawford influenced and inspired many notable students including Joan Eardley, Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun. Crawford was born in Busby, East Renfrewshire and studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where he was taught by Maurice Greiffenhagen from 1919 to 1923. He briefly moved to London to study part-time at the Central School of Art and at Saint Martin's School of Art before returning to Glasgow in 1925 to join the staff at the Glasgow School of Art. He eventually became Head of Painting there, a post he was to hold until 1948. As well as developing a strong style of portrait painting Crawford also painted murals. The sitter is the artist William Armour,who studiied at the GSA and went on to teach there. In 1927 Armour married Mary Nicol Steel (Mary Armour). Although the canvas is undated, we believe it will have been completed in the mid 1920's

Note : An extremely rare example of the work of James Torrance. Only two previous works by Torrance are recorded at auction in the last 20 years - "Honesty" sold by Christie's Glasgow 20th April 1995 lot 975 selling for £5500 and "The Blue Pidgeon" sold by Sotheby's 15th April 2002 lot 47 for £1600 (both hammer prices). - source www.artinfo.com .The sitter for "The Day Dreamer" is believed to be Torrance's daughter who also sat for "The Blue Pidgeon". James Torrance was born in Glasgow and worked in London for many years as a highly successful portrait painter and illustrator. His work includes illustrations for 'Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales' edited by Sir George Douglas (1893). On his return to Scotland he married the flower painter Louise Ellen Perman (tutor of James Stuart Park) and they lived in Helensburgh. The James Torrance Memorial Award is presented each year by the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI)
JOHN HENDERSON (SCOTTISH 1860 - 1924), CROFTERS DWELLINGS, AYRSHIRE oil on canvas, signed 71 x 112cm Framed Label verso: Scottish National Exhibition, Glasgow, 1911 Note: John Henderson was a Glaswegian landscape and portrait painter. His brother was the painter Joseph Morris Henderson RSA (1863-1936) and his father was Joseph Henderson RSW (1832-1908). His sister, Marjory Henderson was the wife of William McTaggart. Henderson was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and then obtained a MA at the University of Glasgow. He exhibited at The Royal Glasgow Institute, The Royal Scottish Academy and The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolor. In Liverpool he exhibited at The Walker Art Gallery and in Manchester at The City Art Gallery. He also assisted at the Glasgow International Exhibitions of 1901-1911 and served as a Governor of the Glasgow School of Art from 1906 to 1918. He was an acting director of the GSA 1914 - 18 and then full director from 1918 - 1924. John Henderson's paintings appear at auction relatively infrequently but Sotheby's sold "In The Highlands" (a 71 x 93cm oil on canvas) for £12,000 (hammer) lot 156, 15.04.97.
An 18th Century Carved Mahogany Jewish Portrait Panel depicting the bust of 'Flavius Josephus'; a first-century Romano-Jewish scholar, historian and hagiographer. The bust recessed in an oval surround inscribed with name to the top and raised on a brick-work pedestal having a shield emblazoned with face mask, book, flag & flaming urn propped against it's foot. Believed to be carved after a 1732 edition of translated Josephus works featuring a printed illustration of the subject from which the carving is based, 10 ins x 6 ins (25.5 cm x 15 cms).
A Large 16th/17th Oil on Canvas: Full length Portrait of a Lady of Eminence possibly Marguerite de Lorraine, Princess of Conti, stood before a draped curtain with landscape beyond. The subject dressed in finery with a pearl coronet, high ruffled lace collar and elaborate dress trimmed with strings of pearls, 93 ins x 54 ins (236 cms X 137 cms), in a moulded black frame 99 ins x 60 ins (252 cm x 253 cms).
Possibly William Larkin (flourished early 1580's to 1619). A Fine Early 17th Century English Oil on Panel: Head & Shoulders Portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh inscribed ANo 1615 AT top right. The subject wearing a black button fronted doublet with elaborate cut work ornamentation and a high starched white collar edged in delicate lace trim. The panel re-backed with cradle, and inscribed on verso; 'In ink on the back of the original panel was written "Sir John Boileau" and this was one of the old pictures in the house (Ketteringham Park) when the Boileau bought it around 1850, and was there when they came. It was bought by me in 1947 at the sale. The house at that time belonged to Lady Jane Grey's husband's family etc. This portrait by experts is said to be English work. I had it cleaned and back 1965, CGH Perks'. 19 ins x 14 ins (48.5 cm x 35.5 cms) in a moulded black frame 27½ ins x 22½ ins (70 cm x 57 cms).

The oak panel with paper label to verso printed 'FROM T RUSHWORTH & SON, Carvers and Gilders, Sadler Street, Durham, Oil Paintings cleaned, lined and restored by special process without injury', 23 ins x 17¾ ins (58.5 cm x 45 cms), in a moulded gilt frame, 26 ins x 21 ins (66 cm x 53 cms).*
A Late 17th Century Oil on Canvas; Head & Shoulders Portrait of Rev. Thomas Jolly very similar to one of 'The Mansfield Portraits' (a collection of fifty 19th century paintings by Gustavas Ellinthorpe Sintzenich of Exeter (C. 1821-1892) copied from original portraits of Clergymen ejected from the Church of England by the Act of Uniformity AD 1662). The subject holding the bible inscribed Gal:2.20 along the top, with inscriptions; 'Anno Domini 1693, AE SVCE: 63' top left and 'Christus Cruci-fixus Cordi-fixus' top right. The canvas inscribed on verso Revd. Thomas Jollie, 30½ ins x 25 ins (78 cm x 63.5 cms).*
Circle of John Michael Wright (1617-1694). An Oil on Canvas: Half Length Portrait of a Young Gentleman sat in landscape. The subject donning a long curly brown wig, a red shawl gathered and buttoned at the shoulder, over a white blouson shirt with lace cravat, 30½ ins x 25 ins (77.5 cm x 64 cms). Set in a 17th century moulded black frame with parcel gilt carving, 37 ins x 32 ins (94 cm x 82 cms).
Follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641). An 18th Century Oil on Canvas, Circa 1720: Head & Shoulders Portrait of King Charles I in Three Positions, also known as the Triple portrait of Charles I, after the original painted in 1635 or 1636, currently part of the Royal Collection, 32 ins x 42 ins (82 cm x 107 cms), in a later moulded frame 37½ ins x 47 ins (95 cm x 120 cms).

A Delightful 17th Century Silk Needlework Portrait Panel Circa 1613, worked in coloured silks and metallic threads with various stitches, depicting the busts of Frederick V Elector Palatine; King of Bohemia and his wife Elizabeth; daughter of James I of England, in oval medallions on an ivory satin ground enhanced with flowers, a moth and snail bordered in later braid. Inscribed paper label on verso. 4 ins x 10¾ ins (10 cm x 27.5 cms). Set in a glazed frame with velvet clad moulding, 7 ins x 13½ ins (18 cm x 34.5 cms).*

The three scrolling candle branches emanating from a cast face-mask mount of a winged Goddess attached to the base of the round dished wall plaque. The centre panel depicting a medallion portrait with date 1482 and initials MDB, The border embossed with undulating foliage in a beaded ropetwist rim, 15 ins (38 cms) in diameter.*
A 17th Century Oval Oil on Canvas: Head & Shoulders Portrait of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), depicted as a young man in his thirties, wearing a white cravat and scarlet jacket with embellished gilt fastenings, 30 ins x 25 ins (76 cm x 64 cms), in a 'Lely' type carved & moulded frame 38 ins x 33 ins (98 cm x 84 cms).*
Circle of Giuseppe Cesari (Caviliere d'Arpino 1568-1640) A portrait of a priest painted c. 1592. The sitter is probably Cinzio Aldobrandini before his appointment as Cardinal in 1593. The subject is shown standing with a letter at a carpet covered dais with a bell, book and writing implements. Cinzio was the eldest nephew of the Aldobrandini pope Clement VIII who took office in 1592. The painting bears Clement's papal tiara and the Aldobrandini arms upper left. The seal on the table may depict the crest of the University of Perugia where Cinzio was a student. Provenance- Estate of Gilbert Rodway QC, 39 1/2'' x 49'' approx.
GAINSBOURG SERGE: (1928-1991) French Singer, Songwriter, Poet, Composer, Actor and Director. Black ink signature on a 4 x 3 clipped piece (`Gainsbourg´) from his book Evguenie Sokolov. Boldly signed across the piece, beneath the printed title of the book Evguenie Sokolov. Professionally matted in black beneath a 7 x 9 portrait photograph of Gainsbourg, to an overall size of 12 x 16. VG £100-150 Evguenie Sokolov (1980) is a novel written by Gainsbourg.
GOBBI TITO: (1913-1984) Italian Baritone. Signed 8 x 10.5 programme by Gobbi. Boldly signed to the inside page depicting the singer, in a close-up profile portrait, in costume as Scarpia from the Puccini´s opera Tosca. The opera programme corresponding to the performance at the National Opera in Paris, with Maria Callas and Renato Cioni, 5th March 1965. VG £80-100
RIZZA GILDA DALLA: (1892-1975) Italian Soprano. Regarded as Puccini´s favourite soprano, she sang at several Puccini´s premieres. Signed postcard photograph by Dalla Rizza, the image depicting the soprano in a semi profile half length pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink across the image, and dated 1916 in her hand. The photograph is lightly affixed to a larger brown card. Together with Bruna Castagna (1903-1983) Italian Mezzo. Signed and inscribed 7.5 x 9.5 photograph, the image showing the singer in a half length pose. Signed in bold black ink to a clear area of the image and dated Buenos Aires, 1941, in her hand. Also including Luisa Bertana (1888-1933) Argentinian Mezzo. Signed 4.5 x 3 photograph, the image depicting Bertana setaed in a half length pose. Signed in bold black ink and dated August 1929 in her hand. Further including Hilde Reggiani (1918-1996) Italian Soprano. Signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph, a close up portrait. SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) Alsatian Theologian, Musician, Philosopher & Physician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952. Signed postal card Albert Schweitzer, the card showing a drawn image of Schweitzer, bearing his name and his Nobel award at the foot of the image. With a Republic of Gabon stamp affixed to the top left corner, also showing Doctor Schweitzer, and an ink stamp from Lambarene, with Schweitzer portrait once more. The Physician adds beneath his autograph the date 23rd July 1960, in his hand. VG £100-150
WILKINS WILLIAM: (1778-1839) English Architect who designed the National Gallery in London. A.L.S., W Wilkins, two pages, 8vo, Weymouth Street, 12th November 1828, to Thomas Stothard. Wilkins complains to his correspondent of having a ‘violent cold’ the last night that he was at the Royal Academy and now is ‘afraid of venturing out at night’, further remarking that he will write to Mr. Pickersgill regarding the circumstance. With integral address leaf bearing the remnants of a red wax seal. VG £150-200 Thomas Stothard (1755-1834) English Painter, Illustrator & Engraver. VAN DONGEN KEES: (1877-1968) Dutch Painter, a member of the Fauves. Signed and inscribed 6 x 8 exhibition brochure by Van Dongen, Nice, Galerie des Ponchettes, 1959. Signed and inscribed by Van Dongen to the frontispiece portrait (`a Jean Roger, friendly Van Dongen´) in bold blue ink, below his photograph, the image depicting him in his studio, painting. The 56 pages paperback brochure contains eleven pages with illustrations of his paintings, and a preface by Cocteau. VG £200-300
MAETERLINCK MAURICE: (1862-1949) Belgian Poet and Playwright. Nobel Prize in Literature 1911. An early interesting A.L.S., M. Maeterlinck, two pages, 8vo, n.p., [Gand], n.d., [1890], to a colleague, in French. Maeterlinck explains to his correspondent his parent´s disagreement referring to his sketch portrait by Minne, and states `I finally send you the sketch. Georges Minne, after keeping it for several days without reporting at all, send it back to me now and tells me that it is not necessary to fix it. But it happens that my parents, after I showed them the drawing, want to absolutely forbid me to publish it (if it ever was the case) as it is now, because they believe I look too much in a way I shouldn´t.´ further saying `..make it, if possible, and giving them this small satisfaction, looking a little bit more distinguished.. which they claim!´ On a post scriptum, Maeterlinck concludes `I have just sent to Verlaine the 3 books´. A letter of very good association. VG £250-350 George Minne (1866-1941) Belgian Artist and Sculptor. Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) French Poet. Considered one of the greatest French poets. The three books Maeterlinck refers to in the present letter are most probably Serres Chaudes (1889), La Princesse Maleine (1889) (Princess Maleine) and Les Aveugles (1890) (The Blind).
[NAPOLEON I]: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A patent award, “Médaille de Sainte-Hélène - Napoleon I - created by H.M Napoleon III”, given to fusilier Jean Pierre Bernier, Sainte Helene, 5th May 1821, for his services from 1792 to 1815, in French. Signed at the foot by the Grand Chancelor of the Imperial Order. The award has been neatly laid out to a larger card, bearing to the right side an attractive crowned medal affixed, bearing to the front Napoleon´s laureate portrait as Emperor, and to the verso the engraved text `to his glorious companions his last thought, St. Helene 5th May 1821´, with a green and purple cloth ribbon. Heavy creases and overall age wear. F £400-500
EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. An excellent A.L.S., Edward, as Duke of Windsor, two pages, 8vo, Hotel Meurice, Paris, 13th December 1938, to Madame Andre Maurois. The Duke thanks his correspondent for her letter and for sending a copy of her husband's biography of Lord Byron, continuing 'Harold Nicholson's clever paragraph on the portrait postcard is like a "hors d'oeuvre", whetting one's appetite for deeper study of this brilliantly romantic if unconventional Englishman'. He concludes by remarking that he and the Duchess both enjoyed her luncheon party and look forward to seeing them both chez Monsieur Prouvost that evening. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Duke and signed by him with his initial ('E') to the lower left corner. A letter of fine content and association. About EX £500-800 Simone de Caillavet (1894-1978) French Woman of Letters, second wife of French Author Andre Maurois (1885-1967). Caillavet was the granddaughter of Anatole France's mistress Leontine Arman de Caillavet. Lord Byron (1788-1824) English Poet, a leading figure in the Romantic movement. Jean Prouvost (1885-1978) French Businessman, Media owner and Politician. Prouvost built and owned various publications including Paris Match.
MAZZINI GIUSEPPE: (1805-1872) Italian Politician and Activist for the for the unification of Italy. Signed printed ink portrait of Mazzini, depicting the Italian activist in a formal head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink (`Gius Mazzini´) at the base of the image. Area of paper loss to the top edge, with a tear, none affecting the signature. With trace of former framing. F £100-150
[GRANT ULYSSES S.]: (1822-1885) American President 1869-77 and Commanding General of the United States Army (1864-69) during the American Civil War. An original, vintage slim 8vo printed broadside issued by Robert Allen Jr. at the time of the death of Grant, bearing the printed heading The Hero at Rest and featuring his portrait above a six verse poem which commences ‘The Soldier crossed the ocean foam-/He had lived on fields of war/ He had sought to live in a smiling home/ And in peaceful scenes afar’ and concludes ‘Lay him to rest, in his chosen land/ Where his loved ones near abide/ Where, may grateful hearts, and comrades hands/ Enshrine Columbia’s Pride’. With the blindstamp of Robert Allen Jr., Notary Public in New Jersey, to the lower right border. A few dark stains, largely to the lower edge, only very slightly affecting a few words of text at the base. G £ 200-300
CHIANG KAI-SHEK: (1887-1975) Chinese Political and Military Leader of the Republic of China 1928-75. Signed 3.5 x 5.5 compliment card, in Chinese characters, by the Generalissimo. The card bears a blind embossed sun at the head above the printed text The President of the Republic of China. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink below the printed text. The card has been neatly matted in black, alongside a 5 x 7 photograph of Chiang Kai-Shek showing him in a close-up portrait wearing his uniform, to an overall size of 12 x 8. Accompanied by the original envelope sent from the office of the President of the Republic of China. Very small age wear, otherwise VG £200-300
SENNA AYRTON: (1960-1994) Brazilian Motor Racing Driver, Formula One World Champion 1988, 1990 & 1991. An official printed 4to programme for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, 8th - 10th July 1988, signed by Senna (with a somewhat hurried signature) to an inside page alongside his colour portrait and printed text, also signed to the inside pages by various other Motor Racing drivers including James Hunt (Formula One World Champion 1976), Jonathan Palmer, Ken Tyrrell, Ivan Capelli, Derek Warwick, Eddie Cheever, Michele Alboreto, Yannick Dalmas, Philippe Alliot etc. Accompanied by an official printed 8vo racecard for the Grand Prix signed to an inside page by commentator Murray Walker and also including various 4to printed information sheets, being bulletins issued by the press office. The programme and racecard bear neatly affixed oblong 12mo Team Lotus Honda stickers and the first pages of the programme have various ticket stubs stapled to them, including admission to the special trackside spectator enclosures. Some light age wear, generally VG, 2 + bulletins. £200-300
ARMSTRONG LOUIS: (1901-1971) American Jazz Trumpeter. Signed 5.5 x 9.5 paper photograph by Armstrong, the image depicting Satchmo in a classical close-up portrait playing his trumpet.
