AFTER NATHANIEL DANCE PORTRAIT OF LORD FREDERICK NORTH (1732-1792), 2ND EARL OF GUILFORDOil on canvas127 x 101.5cm (50 x 39¾ in.)Better known by his title, Lord North, which he primarily used between 1752 and 1790. North was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1770-1782. The original work is held in the National Portrait Gallery's primary collection (NPG 3627). Literature: Sir George Sitwell, A brief history of Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, and of the families that possessed it, London, privately printed 1927, p. 78, in the Drawing Room. Catalogue Note:The Original portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery, by Nathaniel Dance, and dated 1773-74. It has the same dimensions as this portrait. This portrait shows Frederick, Lord North, 2nd Earl of Guilford, K.G. (1732-1793), either in his office as Chancellor of the Exchequer or as Chancellor of the University of Oxford, wearing the garter which he had received in 1772. Better known by his courtesy title Lord North, which he used from 1752 to 1790, he served as Lord of the Treasury (1759-65) and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1767-82), before being appointed Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1770 to 1782. He was Prime Minister during most of the American War of Independence (1775-83).In 1756, he married Anne Speke (c. 1741-97) of Whitelackington in Somerset with whom he had seven children. His eldest daughter was Catherine Anne North (1760-1817), who married Sylvester Douglas, 1st Baron Glenbervie (1743-1823). Their only son, Frederick Sylvester North Douglas (1791-1819) was the first husband of Harriet Wrightson (1788-1864); Harriet inherited Weston Hall in 1809 from her maiden aunt, Mary Heber. The present portrait is after the original by Nathaniel Dance in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 3627), London. Numerous versions exist including those at the Bodleian Library, Oxford (given in 1805); Trinity College, Oxford (bought in 1817); the Carlton Club; Dalmeny (Rosebery sale, Christie's, 5 May 1939, lot 36), and another was offered by Graves to the NPG in 1891. There are engravings by T. Burke (1775), Warren, W.T. Mote, R.H. Cromek, and E. Bocquet.Condition Report: The canvas has been relined. Surface dirt, scratches and abrasions throughout. There has been a reaction with the darker pigment (largely to the trim of the sitter's robes) which has caused some unevenness to the surface. Rubbing to the framing edges and stretcher marks visible. There is a small area to the top right edge of the canvas where it has started to undulate slightly. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching. The presence of a green cloudy masking varnish may be obscuring further retouching or restoration.Condition Report Disclaimer
MARIA COSWAY (BRITISH 1759-1838)PORTRAIT OF CAROLINE, PRINCESS OF WALES AND HER DAUGHTER, PRINCESS CHARLOTTEOil on canvas laid to panel59 x 49cm (23 x 19¼ in.)The heads purportedly later touched and altered by Sir Thomas Lawrence in 1801.Provenance: Gifted to Lady Glenbervie by Queen Caroline (then Princess Caroline)The Hon. Frederick Sylvester North Douglas and Harriet Wrightson Thence by descent at Weston Hall. Literature:S. Lloyd, Richard & Maria Cosway: Regency Artists of Taste and Fashion, Edinburgh, 1995, no. 225, plate 72.Catalogue Note:This romantic painting by Maria Cosway (1760-1838) of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales (1768-1821), consort of George, Prince of Wales (later George IV, 1762-1830), with her daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta (1796-1817), shows Caroline leaning against a statue of Britannia seated in profile, and Charlotte sitting on a lion couchant, which rests at Britannia's feet; St. Paul's Cathedral, London is in the background. The original giltwood frame is surmounted by the Prince of Wales's crest of the three ostrich feathers. By repute, it was a Royal gift from Princess Caroline to Catherine Anne Douglas, Lady Glenbervie (1760-1817), who was her Mistress of the Robes from 1809-20. A label on the back bears the inscription:'Caroline, Princess of Wales aged 32, and Princess Charlotte her daughter; designed and painted by Maria Cosway (wife of Mr Cosway), around 1800. The heads afterwards touched and altered by Lawrence in 1801. The Princess sat to both the painters. Given by HRH The Princess of Wales, Feb. 1801 to Lady Glenbervie when she was about to embark for the Cape of Good Hope'.Although the painting is unsigned it is the exemplar for a mezzotint ; an example is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 605385), the artist is inscribed to the left: 'Maria Cosway pinxit.'; the engraver to the right: 'S.W. Reynolds sculpt.', and below the publisher 'London, Published May 1 1801, at R ACKERMANN'S Repository of Arts, No.101, Strand'. Another copy is in the British Museum (1902,1011.3809).The choice of Maria Cosway as artist was undoubtedly due to the close friendship that existed between Maria and her husband Richard, a leading portrait painter of the Regency period, with the Prince. In 1785, Richard was appointed Principal Painter to the Prince, and the Prince and the bon ton were frequent visitors at Maria's glittering salons and concerts at Schomberg House, 80-82 Pall Mall, London. That the Princess might ask Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) to re-touch the faces of this painting because she was unhappy with the original is feasible. Lawrence was the most celebrated portraitist of his age, and patronised by international statesmen and society figures as well as royalty and military leaders. He was a favourite of the Princess, painting her at least three times, including another painting of her and her daughter (1801-2), which survives in the Royal Collection (RCIN 407292). It shows the Princess playing a harp watched over by a shadowy bust of Minerva, patroness of the arts; Caroline tunes her harp and prepares to play the music offered up by her daughter Charlotte. In 1806, the conduct of Lawrence and the Princess while it was being painted was scrutinised during the 'Delicate Investigation'. A commission of Cabinet ministers assessed the allegations that the Princess had had an adulterous affair with, amongst others, Lawrence. The Princess stated that Lawrence 'stayed a few nights, that by early rising, he might begin painting on the picture before the Princess Charlotte (who as her residence was at that time at Shooter's Hill, was enabled to come early) or myself came to sit' (. Accessed 9 August 2021).Catherine Anne Douglas, Lady Glenbervie, is recorded as Mistress of the Robes to Caroline, Princess of Wales from 1809-20 (. Accessed 9 August 2021). Her spouse, Sylvester Douglas, 1st Baron Glenbervie (1743-1823), was offered the prospect of becoming governor of the Cape in September 1796, and again in January 1800, which he initially refused. In October 1800, he was again proposed for the Cape but political circumstances prevented the appointment. Therefore, while the label on the back of this painting mentions Lord Glenbervie and the Cape, it seems more likely that the Princess gifted the painting offered here during Lady Glenbervie's term as Mistress of the Robes. This supposition is reinforced by the Lawrence painting discussed above, which was originally painted for a Mistress of the Robes, Anne, Marchioness Townshend (her appointment between 1795 and 1808).This painting came to Weston Hall through the marriage of Lord and Lady Glenbervie's son, Frederick Sylvester North Douglas (1791-1819), politician and classical scholar, to Harriet Wrightson (d. 1864), eldest daughter of William Wrightson of Cusworth, Yorkshire; Harriet inherited Weston Hall through her aunt, Mary Heber, in 1809.Condition Report: The paint surface is uneven in places and dirty, with some areas of more ingrained dirt. There is a strip of paint loss to the framed edge at the upper left. There are a number of surface scuffs and scratches. UV light reveals scattered retouching throughout. Frame has had some restoration. Losses and regilding to floral swags. Restoration to top left corner and top edge and round the frame edge. Prince of Wales crest has been off and reattached and has old damage and restorations Gilding flaking and worn consist with age Condition Report Disclaimer

AFTER THOMAS PHILLIPSPORTRAIT OF GENERAL LORD HUTCHINSON OF ALEXANDRIA HOLDING A MAP OF EGYPTOil on canvasLater inscribed 'General Lord Hutchinson by Phillips' (lower left)127 x 102cm (50 x 40 in.) Literature:F. Sitwell, Weston Hall, Towchester, Northamptonshire: A Brief Guide, Northampton, 1993, p. 4, in the Dining Room.Catalogue Note:This oil on canvas portrait of John Hely-Hutchinson, 2nd earl of Donoughmore (1757-1832), is a close copy of a painting by Thomas Phillips (1770-1845) in the Royal Collection (RCIN 402776). The Royal canvas has near-identical dimensions to the portrait offered here - 50 x 40 ins. (127 x 102 cm.). The Royal portrait was painted in 1811 for George IV for 80 guineas in recognition of George's friendship with the sitter, who, as of 1803, had advised him on the governance of Ireland, and on the pacification of Queen Caroline. Lord Hutchinson was a well-known confident of George, when Prince of Wales, and became a regular visitor to Brighton Pavilion. The painting is recorded from the early-mid 19th century as having been at Carlton House, Windsor Castle and Hampton Court. Lord Hutchinson, army officer and politician, had an illustrious army career fighting against Napoleon's French revolutionary armies. In 1801, he commanded the first division of Sir Ralph Abercromby's army, which landed in Egypt on 10 March, and defeated the French at the battle of Alexandria. In December the same year, he was created Baron Hutchinson of Alexandria and of Knocklofty, co. Tipperary, with a pension of £2000 a year. He also received the new Turkish order of the Crescent in brilliants in March 1802. In 1825, he succeeded his brother as 2nd earl of Donoughmore and 2nd Viscount Hutchinson. He died, unmarried, at Knocklofty, co. Tipperary, in 1832, and was succeeded as earl and viscount by his nephew John Hely-Hutchinson (1787-1851). Colonel the Hon. Henry Hely-Hutchinson (1790-1874), the brother of the latter, and a professional solider who had served in the Peninsula and at Waterloo, married Harriet Wrightson (1788-1864) in 1825. Harriet Wrightson had inherited Weston Hall in 1809 through her aunt Mary Heber. Their fourth daughter, Louisa Lucy, married Sir Reresby Sitwell, Bt., in 1857, and hence the link with the Sitwell family.Condition Report: The canvas is not relined. There is some very fine craquelure throughout and some light surface dirt. There is some flaking and paint loss to the lower edge and a few further minor losses to the lower left quadrant. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching to the lower edge and a green masking varnish, which is uneven and may conceal further restoration. Otherwise, in generally good condition. Some minor scuffs and abrasions to the frame.Condition Report Disclaimer

Framed Art Fruit & Cup A. E. Barnes Original Acrylic - Artist Statement I was never interested in painting or drawing when I was little. I wanted to read books and study the night sky. I loved to re-decorate my room, and move the furniture around. I was more interested in cerebral things and studied Philosophy and Comparative Religion at the University of West Florida. My parents had an art gallery in downtown Daytona Beach, Florida when I was a baby. 1964, to be precise, during that Aquarian Age of intellectual and social reformation. My mother is a famous southern painter, Diana Barnes. My father is an infamous mathematician and story teller. So, I have certainly grown up in a world of ideas and art. We were a little bit of a gypsy family, touring with my mother on painting trips and for art show events. In May of 1989, I had a crazy idea to paint a portrait of my mom riding a pig in her living room, for a Mother’s Day gift. I got some old plywood and primed it white. Then I began to design the portrait in the afternoon. I stayed up all night working and got up early the next day and began again. I loved painting so much that I continued to find boards, painting on them for the rest of the week. Still lifes, interior scenes of my own house and garden, landscapes from my historic neighbourhood. I had finished about 20 paintings in a week. I stopped eating or sleeping; I painted everything I saw and began to use wild colours. I bought a set of good oil paints and borrowed some old brushes from my mom. I had always been in love with the French painters, the Fauves . Henry Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck and Andre Derain were my new heroes. I checked out every library book on Impressionism and Expressionism. I covered my walls in posters of paintings by Van Gogh and Gauguin.I was hooked on oil painting like a monkey hooked on chocolate covered bananas. There was no turning back. Being an expert at moving furniture, I re-arranged my house, making the living room into a giant art studio. That was week two of my new found painting career. I vowed on the grave of Henri Matisse that I would paint forever! When I first started painting, the Outsider and Folk Art Movement was getting underway in the Southern states. Because I never studied art, I was lumped into this new and upcoming group. I was accepted to prestigious art shows like the Piedmont Art Festival in Atlanta and shows in Miami, Key West, Dallas, Houston and Washington DC. I loved talking to customers and learning about their homes and interests.I started painting special order work for private homes and corporate headquarters. I was able to place my work in wonderful galleries. I was so lucky to be able to sell paintings, enough to pay my bills. I have been painting for 23 years. It seems like yesterday when I first picked up the brush. I love oil paints the best; but I also use acrylics some of the time. I learned early on to use the best canvas and paints, which insures a high quality painting that will last for hundreds of years. I have exhibited in lots of art shows, presented work in great art galleries in the US and Mexico and sold paintings to many wonderful people including Rod Stewart and Reggie Jackson. CIRCLE OF ROBERT WALKER (BRITISH 1607-1658)PORTRAIT OF SIR NATHANIEL BARNARDISTON IN ARMOUROil on canvasLater inscribed with sitter's name and further inscribed 'By Van Dyck 1632' (lower left) 132 x 107cm (51¾ x 42 in.)Provenance: The Barnardiston family at Brightwell Hall until brought to Weston Hall in 1744Thence by descent at Weston Hall. Literature:Sir George Sitwell, A brief history of Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, and of the families that possessed it, London, privately printed 1927, p. 42, p. 56.Catalogue Note:This portrait depicts Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston (1588-1653), Parliamentarian politician and ecclesiastical patron, known as 'the patriot' during the English Civil War for his opposition to Charles I (Sir George Sitwell, A brief history of Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, and of the families that possessed it, London, privately printed 1927, p. 42). It came to Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, through inheritance. Barnardiston was the grandfather of Arthur Barnardiston Esq. of Brightwell Hall, Suffolk, who married Mary Jennens (d. 1788), eldest daughter of Mrs Susanna Jennens (1688-1760) of Weston Hall. An Appraisement of pictures dated May 1744 for Mary Barnardiston records two paintings of Sir Nathaniel: 'Old Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston's picture' at a value of £10, and 'Old Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston, a half piece' at £2 2s (ibid., p. 56). These paintings were probably moved from Brightwell Hall to Mary Barnardiston's London house in Bedford Row prior to being sent to Weston Hall (ibid.).Born in 1588 to parents with strong puritan views, Barnardiston was from one of the oldest and wealthiest families in Suffolk, who could trace their ancestry to the reign of Richard I. In 1618, he was knighted, and a year later, following an inheritance of additional lands, his annual income increased to over £3,500. Barnardiston controlled the appointments to four livings in the Church of England in Suffolk and Lincolnshire, and together with like-minded allies provided advowsons for eight puritan ministers. In 1624, he was appointed High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk. At the county level he supported the parliamentary cause; in April 1640, he was re-elected as Knight of the Shire for Suffolk, for the Short Parliament; Barnardiston set out for this parliament with a sense of mission, believing that failure to enact reforms would endanger the church and kingdom. In November 1640, he was re-elected to the Long Parliament, though he played only a modest role, serving on lesser committees, including one concerned with the reformation of ecclesiastical courts. At his death, he was lauded as the father of his country for having defended its rights and liberties. His friends, including Christopher Burrell, published a volume of elegies, Suffolks Tears (1653) in commemoration of his life. Barnardiston's third son, Samuel (1620-1707), was given the epithet 'Roundhead', from which the use of this name for the Parliamentarians arose, during the apprentice riots - a protestation against Charles I's implicit threat to use military force to support his government. Henrietta Maria, Charles's consort, is said to have spied Samuel standing out among the closely cropped apprentice boys and remarked: 'see what a handsome young Roundhead is there!' (. Accessed 10 August 2021).Condition Report: The canvas has been relined. There is a horizontal crease running the width of the painting, through the sitter's breast-plate, possibly cause by the canvas being folded previously. Some light scattered surface dirt and craquelure throughout. Stretcher marks visible in a raking light. The canvas is a little slack. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout, including to the aforementioned creased area and also to the later added inscription (lower left). There is also a green cloudy masking varnish which may be hiding the extent of any further retouching.Condition Report Disclaimer

Sitwell, Weston Hall, Towcester, Northamptonshire: A Brief Guide, Northampton, 1993, p. 6, recorded on the Main Stairs.Catalogue Note:This portrait shows Anne, Lady Blencowe (née Wallis, 1656-1718), the eldest daughter of John Wallis (1616-1703), Savilian professor of geometry at the University of Oxford, wife to Sir John Blencowe (1642-1726) of Marston St Lawrence, and mother of Mrs Susanna Jennens (1688-1760) of Weston Hall. Due to the depiction of orange blossom it was probably painted on her engagement in 1675 to Sir John, a barrister at the Inner Temple, who she married in December the same year. By family tradition, this portrait was formerly at Marston St. Lawrence (Sir George Sitwell, A brief history of Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, and of the families that possessed it, London, privately printed 1927, p. 5, f/n 1). Lady Anne's father set great store by learning, and it is believed that he provided his daughter with a good education. She is best known for her recipe book dated 1694, which provides an excellent sample of dishes established as staples among gentry in the second half of the seventeenth century (ibid., pp. 27-29). This recipe book was added to by successive female owners of Weston Hall, and remained in use there for at least 100 years. It was later published in 1925 in a limited edition of 650 copies by Guy Chapman, a former freelance editor, who had set up the Adelphi Press.

Harriet inherited Weston Hall through her unmarried aunt Mary Heber in 1809. In 1825, she married Colonel the Hon. Henry Hely-Hutchinson (1790-1834), brother of the 3rd Earl of Donoughmore, and professional solider - her first marriage to the Hon. Frederick North Douglas, MP for Banbury, son of Sylvester Douglas, Baron Glenbervie of Kincardine, had been cut short when the groom tragically died within three months. The Colonel was a womanizer, in receipt of love tokens from the notorious Pauline Borghese, Napoleon's sister, and the great love of his life Countess Sidonie Potocka, granddaughter of the Prince de Ligne. With the Colonel, Harriet had five daughters, and the family lived at Weston Hall. Weston Hall passed to the Sitwell family by way of Harriet Frances (d. 1911), the oldest daughter of the Colonel and Harriet, who married Wyndham Hanmer to become Lady Hanmer.
