Manner of Richard Cosway Portrait miniature of a lady, possibly Lucy Savage Nassau, in a blue dress with white fichu and grey-black sashwatercolour on ivory, in an ornate gilt bronze and heavy brocade frame9cmProvenance: From the collection of Col. Vernon Hope-Johnstone; Bristol Antiques, Cape Town, South Africa, from whom acquired in 2009 as of 'Lucy Nassau, Countess of Rochford (née Younge)' for 6,000 R (£444)This composition appears to partly derive from an undated miniature by Richard Cosway which is identified as being of Lucy Nassau, the daughter of Edward Younge of Durnford in Wiltshire who married in 1742 William Henry Nassau de Zuylestein, 4th Earl of Rochford (1717-1781). However, she would have already been well into her 40s at the earliest time that Cosway could have painted the original. Therefore, it is more likely the sitter in the present miniature is instead Lucy Nassau (1752 - before 1830) the daughter of Richard Savage Nassau (brother of the 4th Earl) and of his wife Elizabeth Anne Spencer, widow of the 5th Earl of Hamilton. We are grateful to a member of the Nassau family for suggesting the likely identification of the sitter in the present miniature.
