George Knapton (1698-1778) Portrait of Mrs Knight, standing, three quarter length, holding a basket containing birds Inscribed Mrs Knight, oil on canvas, 95cm by 71.5cm George Knapton, the son of a City Merchant, spent seven years as apprentice to Jonathan Richardson the elder and attended the St Martin`s Lane Academy. He was a founder-member of the Roman Club and following a tour of Italy founded the Society of Dilettanti becoming their official portrait painter in 1740. A well recorded portrait by Knapton depicts Robert Knight, Baron Luxborough (painted c.1748/9 which sold at Christie`s 11 Dec 2009 Lot 146). In June 1750 Robert Knight`s son, the Hon Henry Knight married Frances Heath, daughter of Thomas Heath, MP for Harwich. It is possible this is a portrait commissioned by the Baron of his new daughter-in-law, Frances Knight remarried in 1763 following Henry Knight`s death, this time to Henry Scott, 4th Earl of Deloraine. He married Lady Diana, daughter of Hugh, 3rd Earl of Marchmont on 18 April 1754. He became 10th Laird after the death of his father, also Walter Scott, who himself had become 9th Laird after his nephew, John Scott, 8th Laird died without male issue. In 1747/8 Allan Ramsay painted the two daughters of John Scott of Harden; Mary Lillias and Anne in similar painted ovals (as recorded in The Complete Catalogue of his Paintings by Alastair Smart), in the same year their cousin Walter Scott became MP and inherited the title as 10th Laird aged only 23. Follower of John Philip Simpson (c.1853-1866) Portrait of a negro slave, half length, wearing a cream shirt, his wrists in chains Oil on canvas, 76.5cm by 63.5cm See illustration Among well-known British painters who included black slaves and black male figures in their work during this period were Eyre Crowe, William Mulready, Richard Ansdell and Edwin Longsden Long (1829-1891). In Long`s work Uncle Tom and Little Eva of 1866, now in the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth, the black slave bears some resemblance to the model in the above work, so Long does merit consideration on the basis of comparison with certain of his earlier, less finished, paintings.
