Craigie Aitchison Collection - A 19th Century gilt framed dressing screen with upper glazed panels. The lower body later re-covered in a cerise pink fabric with matched sequin trim. Ref - This screen can be seen in a photograph taken of Naaotwa Swayne seated for a portrait in Craigie`s sitting room. The image shows the original fabric covering later replaced by Craigie. W Day Stevenson - a portrait of Joseph Pearce, he seated in a chair inspecting a violin which is a Cremona, the artist was his nephew and the subject was painted in Sheffield 1869. William John Pearce was the author of the book Violins and Violin Makers. Signed, oil on canvas, framed, 19.5" x 23".

Item obtained by the vendor`s father, a personal friend of the cartoonist. Rare. Some tape residue / damage to rear, but nevertheless a wonderful portrait of `On The Waterfront`-era Brando.

Pasteur, de l`Instuit de France", attractively mounted with a black and white reproduction (approx. 150x125mm) of Edelfeldt`s celebrated portrait of Pasteur at work in his laboratory. Framed and glazed. Overall size. approx. 415x285mm. A wonderful display item with an excellent example of Pasteur`s hand.
BRITTEN, BENJAMIN - `PETER GRIMES` CASTBook - (BOOK)A copy of "Sadler`s Wells Opera Book No.3, Peter Grimes, by Benjamin Britten" (Bodley Head, 1945), original printed wrappers with some minor spine and edge wear (as often with books printed to wartime specifications), slim 8vo (approx. 185x125mm). This copy DOUBLE-SIGNED by composer Benjamin Britten, once "with best wishes" in pencil below his frontispiece portrait, and again in ink on the title page. Additionally signed by Peter Pears (over a printed illustration of his `Peter Grimes` character) and by fellow cast members Edmund Donlevy, Roderick Jones, Edith Coates, Owen Brannigan, Valetta Iacopi, Tom Culbert, Joan Cross and Minnia Bower. SHOSTAKOVICH, DMITRIProgramme - (PROGRAMM)A 12pp. printed programme for the Scottish National Orchestra`s (cond. Alexander Gibson) performance of an evening of Shostakovich`s music at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh on Monday, 3rd September 1962, SIGNED by Shostakovich beneath his portrait in the concert programme. Overall approx. 200x125mm. Some minor creasing and wear, but overall a lovely item. The vendor recalls: "Across the aisle was this smallish anonymous looking person surrounded, as I remember them, by dark suited men. I slipped across during the interval and thrust my programme hopefully at him". Hi-res scans on request.

Mounted. An exceptional image, with two very clear signatures. Ideal for framing.

In addition, the book is signed by over one hundred other politicians, peers and political figures, including Harold Wilson, James Callaghan, Tony Blair, William Hague, Betty Boothroyd, Paddy Ashdown, Tony Benn, Martin Bell etc. Some signatures are inscribed to Patricia, but overall a remarkable cornucopia of political autographs adorning a most fascinating book on the art history of the House of Commons. BOELCKE, OSWALD - WWI FLYING ACEPhotograph Signed - (SP)A vintage sepia portrait postcard of Oswald Boelcke (approx. 130x85mm), signed in blue ink by the air ace. In very good condition, with some slight ink markings to image and small pin mark at head. Boelcke, who died in 1916, is considered the father of the German fighter air force, he was the first to formalise rules of air fighting. Germany`s premier ace, Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron), had been taught by Boelcke and continued to idolise his late mentor long after he had surpassed Boelcke`s tally of victories.
A rare Chelsea-Derby part tea service. c.1775, probably modelled by Pierre Stephan, comprising a teapot, cream jug, two cups and two saucers, all with small gold anchor marks, the teapot, jug and one saucer incised with a script `N`, the teapot of unusual form with tapered cylindrical body with pronounced flattened shoulder, angular handle and short part-fluted spout with moulded wreath decoration, on a flared foot, the raised rim pierced with two rows of small holes, the scrolled handle mount with similar piercing, the spiral fluted cover with Sphinx finial, decorated with floral swagged urns and floral sprigs between cobalt blue borders with gilded foliate decoration, the shoulder with a puce and turquoise floral and foliate meander, the foot and cover with cobalt blue and gilded fluting, 4in. (10.1cm.) high, the other five pieces with conforming decoration, base of jug off and repaired, hairline to one cup, the other cup with discolouration to base. (5). * A teapot of similar form but with plain, gilt sprigged decoration, described as Derby, is in the V&A Collection, Museum No. C.254&A-1922. A cream jug of similar form and decoration, the urn replaced with a portrait oval, was sold at Bonhams, London, 23rd June 2004, Lot 1202, hammer price £450. ** Provenance: Included in a 1949 inventory of porcelain bequeathed to Dr. John Alistair Burkhardt by his aunt, Miss Charlotte Mary Sandford of 27, The Little Boltons, South Kensington. The inventory was prepared by White Berry & Catford, Valuers, 28 Cadogan Place, SW1 and dated 3rd March 1949. Most of the pieces on this inventory are included in our auction catalogue (lots 15 to 49). Photographs of the inventory are available via e-mail by request and a copy of the inventory will be provided to purchasers of these lots after the sale.
Sir William Orpen, R.A., R.H.A. (Irish, 1878-1931). Portrait of a lady, believed to be Lady Berkeley. oil on canvas, signed `Orpen` top left. 35 x 24¾in. (89 x 63cm.). * According to the story passed down through the Burkhardt family, this was the last portrait painted by Orpen, discovered on the easel in his studio after his death in 1931. A paper label to the frame verso is inscribed "Property of Sir. W. Orpen" in ink.
