Edward Miles (British, 1752-1828) Portrait miniature of Sir Edward Hyde East (1764-1847), 1st Baronet watercolour on ivory, in a later oval gold frame 4¾cm (2in) Sir Edward Hyde East, 1st Baronet (1764–1847) was a British member of parliament, legal writer, and judge in India. He served as chief justice of Calcutta from 1813 to 1822. Edward East was the great-grandson of Captain John East, who was active in the conquest of Jamaica, and obtained an estate there. He was born in that island on 9 September 1764. He became a student of the Inner Temple, London, and was called to the bar on 10 November 1786. He sat in the parliament of 1792 for Great Bedwin, and steadily supported William Pitt. In 1813 he was chosen to succeed Sir Henry Russell as chief justice of the supreme court at Fort William, Bengal. Before he left England he was knighted by the Prince Regent. Besides performing his judicial duties, he interested himself in the cause of native education, and was the chief promoter of the Hindu College. When he retired from office in 1822 the Indians presented him with an address and subscribed for a statue of him. This, executed by Francis Chantrey, was afterwards placed in the grand-jury room of the supreme court. On his return, East was made a baronet, on 25 April 1823. Some loss of colour to the blue sky to his left.
German School (late 18th Century) Portrait of Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (1735-1806) watercolour on ivory, in an oval turned-wood frame 3¾cm (1in) Charles William Ferdinand was a celebrated Field-Marshal in the Prussian Army and regarded as one of the most able soldiers of his time. He was the son of Charles I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (1713-80) and Philippine Charlotte (1716-1801). Condition appears fine.
English School (18th Century) Portrait of a lady in white, with powdered hair initialled and dated lower right "TR 1790" watercolour on ivory 6½cm (2in) The initials on the present miniature are likely to be a later addition. The portrait looks to be based on an Indian period John Smart portrait of the mid-late 1780s. Condition appears fine.
French School (early 19th Century) Portrait of an artist, possibly a self-portrait watercolour on ivory in a circular gold frame 8cm (3in) The young unidentified artist looks to be studying from the bust in front of her, which is in turn staring out at the viewer. The possibility of the bust being a faithfully depicted antique is diminished by the untypical locks of hair which fall over the shoulders. Instead this bust is perhaps a representation of a deceased family member or friend, the importance of whom to the artist is reflected in the way it is raised on a plinth. The underlying style of the work is wholly Neoclassical, a theme particularly favoured in the 18th/early 19th century in Europe, and echoed here in the colonnade architectural backdrop and the attire worn by the subject. Condition is fine.
American School (circa 1843) Portrait of a Gentleman said to be R. Perry, wearing black coat and waistcoat, gold fob seal, white shirt and cravat inscribed verso "R. Russian School (late 18th Century) Portrait of a Gentleman, in profile to the left, in the uniform of an Officer of the Russian Gardes a Cheval, possibly a member of the Imperial family, in white military uniform and gold sash, buttons and lace, with his hair brushed forward a la Brutus and with a twisted pigtail behind - the sister Regiment of the Chevalier Guards, but with gold buttons and lace oval, watercolour and bodycolour on ivory, mounted in a gilt metal cased frame 6 x 5cm (2 x 2in) Provenance: Presumed to have descended from the sitter to the present owner who is of Russian descent. The Order of Cheval was the most exclusive Russian regiment who personally guarded the Tsar; Officers were generally from the highest echelons of the Russian nobility. Dr Anthony Parton has suggested the sitter is possibly Alexander 1 of Russia (1777-1825) in the uniform of the equivalent of the Household Cavalry in England. Backed glass with gilt spandrels - condition appears fine.
