Three medals to Lieutenant Colonel W.H. Forbes Taylor R.A., M.B.E., South Africa Medal (Lieut W.H.F. Taylor 6th B.D.E. R.A.) with 1879 clasp, and Cape Of Good Hope General Service Medal (Lieut. Col. W.H.F. Taylor R.A. Commdg Col. Arty. Bechuanaland), the latter two engraved in large serifed capitals; together with associated items and ephemera, including a photographic portrait of the recipient in uniform, an artillery pouch fitting, correspondence, and a scrap album with photographic prints and newspaper cuttings including many studies of artillery; also a framed copy of ‘Proclamation No. 31’.as issued by the recipient as Major Commandant Kimberley in 1901, dealing with the control of intoxicating liquor, and a framed collection of the signatures of various senior military figures pasted onto East Africa Protectorate stationery.
AMENDED DESCRIPTION An interesting naval group of five, attributed to John Simmonds Chief Bosun`s Mate R.N., comprising: Baltic Medal (see below), Crimea Medal with clasp for Sebastopol, second China War Medal with clasp for Taku Forts 1858 (see below), QVR Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Turkish Crimea Medal (Sardinian issue), all un-named except the LSGC which is named to Jno Simmonds Chf Bosns Mate HMS Hector; together with a photographic portrait of the recipient wearing his medals, and a small quantity of ephemera. After leaving the Navy John Simmonds lived in Woolston, Southampton, until his death, in 1911, at the age of 85. He appears not to have been entitled to the Baltic Medal or the 2nd China War Medal. They are visible in his photograph, suggesting that they were contemporary incorrect additions to his group.
