Returning to London on joining the Metropolitan Police in 1931. Awarded the King?s Police Medal for bravery in 1936. Joined Special Branch in 1938. Serving undercover with organisations such as IRA and Oswald Mosley and the Blackshirts and various organisations and individuals thought to be a risk to national security during the war years. Protection Officer to Winston Churchill in 1945 and again in 1951-1952. Spending time at Chartwell and Chequers and travelling with him to Antibes, France. Protection Officer to Clement Attlee 1945-1951. 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Lady in lace-trimmed dress, a spray of roses at her breast", portrait study, head and shoulders, oil on canvas, initialled "JW" and dated "1763" above her shoulder, 54 cm x 43 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Overall the painting is dirty and requires cleaning and sympathetic restoration. The main body of the painting particularly to the shawl and face has distinctive craquelure. There is a large patch of paint missing above her right shoulder and a hole beneath. The paint and canvas are indented where the stretchers meet the canvas - visible all round. There is slight paint loss above her head and to the right of her head. Under UV light there appears to be restoration to the flowers at her breast suggesting either this is a later addition or repainted and also to the bottom right hand corner there is a large black patch suggesting restoration.
THORBURN "Lady with fur wrap and pearl necklace and black dress seated", portrait study, half length, oil on canvas, signed bottom left, 76 cm x 63.5 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Gilt decorative frame has some knocks and bumps in numerous places throughout, various pieces have been off the top left corner and quite crudely re-glued, some splitting to the giltwork particularly to the top corners, however overall impression of frame is reasonably complete. Painting is very slightly dirty, paint appears sound and painting is tight in frame, very dirty and cobwebby to back, otherwise appears OK.
AFTER JACOB HUYSMANS (1633-1696) "Izaak Walton", portrait study, half length, oil on canvas, unsigned, 76 cm x 63 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Frame has knocks and bumps to edges and corners throughout, there is flaking towards base of slip. Painting itself shows some areas of cracking to the oil particularly to the top section and bottom right corner, oilwork to face and main centre of the picture seems secure, overall dirty, has clearly been re-stretchered in the past and has some old restoration work. Under UV light shows restoration particularly towards the top half of the painting in the background, to the lips, hairline and forehead, and along the bottom edge, under the hands and up the arm (probably previous heat damage).
19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Lady in white dress", miniature portrait study, oval, watercolour on ivory, unsigned, 3.5 cm x 3 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Sealed within frame, and back of frame glued on. Gilt mount is oval, but the frame aperture is circular, so frame appears to be matched / not original. Unable to inspect picture fully due to frame being sealed, but from surface inspection through the glass appears to have some fading, and a small mark near lower edge. Scuffs and scratches to frame.
19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Lady with ringlets in white dress, a rose at her breast", miniature portrait study, watercolour, unsigned, 6.5 cm x 4.75 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Frame with wear and scuffs, and some signs of glue to the interior of the frame where metal mounts appear to have been reattached. Oval portrait does not sit quite evenly within aperture and there is a gap to the left. Unable to inspect fully due to picture being sealed within frame, but surface condition through glass appears to be OK.
ENGLISH SCHOOL IN THE MANNER OF RICHARD COSWAY (1742-1821) "Lady in white dress with pearl necklace", miniature portrait study, head and shoulders, oval, watercolour, unsigned, 8.75 cm x 6.75 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Sealed in frame, so unable to remove for inspection. New backing paper. Some scuffs, chips and losses to frame. Surface of painting with some yellowing.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Lady in blue dress with hair in ringlets", miniature portrait study, oval, oil on ivory, unsigned, 7.5 cm x 6 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Sealed within frame and new paper to back of frame. Unable to inspect portrait fully, but when inspection through the glass it appears in reasonably good order, although the edges are visible within the aperture are are quite rough-cut. Aperture is slightly larger than the edges of the picture. Frame with wear, touch up paint, scuffs, craquelure.
A 19th Century Italian bronze life mask, believed to be of John Keats (1795-1821), 18.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS This mask is cast in bronze. A similar life mask in plaster is in the National Portrait Gallery.Indeed this mask appears to be modelled on the original in plaster by Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) produced for a number of Keats's close friends. Overall surface of face has yellow deposits and there are quite a few areas where there appear to have been bronze filler added, these may have been due to repairs required following casting, or may be later repairs. The underside edges are very roughl / unfinished (please see photos) and there are quite a few rough deposits to the interior, and various cut-off / ground down pillar-like bronze sections visible to interior. A threaded hole to the underside of the chin. No neck area present, as cast ends beneath chin (see photos).
EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman in black coat and white stock", a portrait study, half length, oil on canvas, unsigned, 76.5 cm x 63.5 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light shows small spots of restoration throughout, from general restoration to secure the piece, appears to have been professionally restored, in particular there is a patch approx. 10 x 4 cm to the background on the right-hand side of the face (but not on the face itself), and there are numerous other small areas of restoration throughout - some to the face area but generally quite even throughout, generally the picture is very dirty with some flaking to the oil lower left side towards edge of frame in at least half a dozen places (see photo) - largest area approx. 1 x 1 cm, some cracking to the oil particularly lower left corner (probably from heat damage) there are at least three or four spots of white paint dropped on the picture towards background, picture appears to have been re-lined but some considerably time ago as is very browned and dirty. Frame has cracking throughout conducive with age, is extremely dirty, giltwork is quite rubbed throughout, various pin head size chips to the giltwork on close inspection, however the general overall impression is that it looks reasonably complete, there is an area on front left-hand side approx. 4 x 5 cm in the background which is discoloured and looks whiter than the rest of the frame.

JAMES PATERSON PRSW RSA RWS (SCOTTISH 1854 - 1932), A BRETON HARBOUR oil on canvas, signed 65cm x 75cm Framed Label verso: The Fine Art Society, London. Label dated: September 1961. Note: James Paterson PRSW RSA RWS (21 August 1854 - 25 January 1932) was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter associated with The Glasgow Boys. Paterson studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and subsequently in Paris under Louis Jacquesson de La Chevreuse (1839-1903) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). This painting may have been executed in this period between 1880 and 1882, or on later visits to France by the artist.
